Ben Cousins a Tiger (Merged)

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

I have steered clear from the Cousins debate on a whole until now, so I still find some of these topics interesting (even if some of you have already discussed them at length).

The reasons are:
1. The persona projected in the media by Ben, does not show a person who is seeking to change.

Do I judge your experiences with drug addicts through the snippets of information I can sense through an unreliable medium?

I wouldn't be able to understand the first thing about what you've gone through if all I had to go by was the media, is that a fair statement?

2. Impact on club sponsorship.

Clutching at straws.

3. Sanctions imposed by the AFL
The AFL have washed there hands of the whole problem, it will be the club that bears the fallout not the AFL.

Why do you think the AFL is now looking at bending the rules? They want Ben to play. They will assist the club who takes him on in any way that they can - without the AFL eliminating some of the risks no club in the AFL will touch him.

4. Distraction caused to our playing list
It would adversely effect the performance of our younger player plus it may have parents saying they do not want there kids to play for RFC, remember what happened to the eagles.

So our kids will start playing worse because of Ben's presence? And we won't be able to draft anyone because the rest of the world is as irrational as you?

Okay then, try to convince me that Ben is going to adversely effect the performance of our younger players. I don't want grand statements I want reasons and facts.

I'll kick things off: at West Coast he pushed everyone around him to train beyond their limits. All reports suggest he was a fantastic character to have around the club and a driving motivator behind the 2006 flag.

That is a major stumbling block to start with.

2. Impact on club sponsorship.
Media image is everything

3. Sanctions imposed by the AFL

1) Same was said at the time about the first alleged person

2) Had no sponsorship issues first time. Only had issues with the TAC and the likes of Ray and Otto getting busted behind the wheel.

3) Thats the situation with any player, how is Cousins different? We cop three strikes (and word is we have someone on two) same situation.

4) WCE had a culture issue, with MANY players indulging. Do you seriously believe Cousins could convince a playing group he has no history with to walk down a similar path??

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

I heard on SEN tonight that Richmond has repeated that it is not interested in Cousins. I hope to God that is true (for all the reasons outlined). Too many risks involved and nothing but limited short term gain at best. We have already recruited two recycled players in the draft to try and save Wallets skin, that should be more than enough.

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

I can see why we wouldn't. Other clubs have been reluctant to select him due to the displeasure of the board and current sponsor's!

As much as I'd love to have Cuz at the RFC and playing for the TIGE's we just can't afford to whilst we are carrying the likes of Kane Johnson.

We cant have to players over 30yo in th emidfield. I feel KJ will be getting a game as the leader and we cant knock him off for a new bloke who we expect to just step in everyone have as much respect for as they do Kane.

However BC is hands down still the better platyer its tough. BC would still be 100x better than whoever we can select with pick 8 in the PSD!!!!!

If RFC recruit Ben Cousins I will not renew my membership.

Good, then *smile* off.

Different sport and different addiction but he is an example:

West Ham United [EPL]

Had a player Teddy Sherringham who was very good at poker, when he joined the club problems associated with gambling increased because he used to play for very large sums of money on the team bus to games.

The club had to step in and ban poker because of unrest within the playing group.

So to answer you question it may happen but you can not guarantee it will not.

So you think the club will condone casual drug use and only intervene when it becomes a problem? Clubs are already actively working to ensure players don't develop a culture of addiction within their clubs. So 16 AFL clubs are already doing for drugs with West Ham did for gambling.

So whats the problem? The defense mechanism is already in place, and it has worked successfully so far with our suspected case.

He's not going to coach your son's team, why even ask the question, what the hell does that have to do with anything?

Next time ask if we'd be happy with him helping an old lady cross the street because that's about as relevant as your question. ::)

You assume too much Zoso.

I said "at my son's team"....not coaching. BC will never coach any side that my son plays footy for.

His coach is clean. His fellow players are clean. He can TRUST ALL OF his team-mates that he passes the footy to, shepherds and blocks for, runs hard for and those that pass the footy to him.

Whether my son gets to play 300 games of AFL footy is in the lap of the gods, but when he gets older he may have a chance.

:clap

But it's still nearly two weeks away - the three ring circus could end up with more rings than Hefner's girlfriends in that time!

No there's still a chance. ::)

Looks to me like a washed up someone in the media is just trying to put their name up in lights & I am glad Cameron has hosed this rubbish down the drain.

Seriously some folks need to move on from this fantasy.

Cousins will not be a mature age rookie with Richmond.
For starters, why on earth would Ben play for $32,000(?) a season with all the crap he'll have to deal with to satisfy the requirements of the AFL?
Why would Richmond pick an ageing, questionably injured player with major baggage who can't even play for us until someone gets injured?
Do we really need the distraction of the Ben Cousins circus that much?

It's not happening and thank the Chimp for that. 8)

Re: Ben Cousins a tiger?

if ben really really wants to play for the love of the game....he could play for free..:)

i dont understand why he would put himself through this....he shouldve gone and played in a strong country team i reckon..let people see if he can still play..and handle the pressure...even at that level..
