Ben Cousins a Tiger (Merged)

The lad is 30, has bad hammies and is keen to prove himself at a new club. A training injury is not impossible. I'm just keeping expectations reasonable, that's all

Lets not have Buyer's remorse set in before he has even trained.
Lets be reasonable and give the kid a break..

From a marketing perspective the $$$ will be worth it and from an emotional perspective I can almost hear that roar at the bounce of the ball in Rd 1 against Carlton.

Welcome to PRE RBR. All I saying is we need to not expect too much, 15 good games would be a great return from PSD pick 6.

No worries Colonel, I really hope they use him like Richo last year so as to get more out of him. I am hoping off the field at training he really leads the kids in what ies required to win a premiership. Foley in particular who already knows about busting a gut will get bennyfit I am sure ;)

I don't understand why you support (or pretend to) this club. Without exception, every post I've ever read from you is negative. I've been following this club for over 30 years. I'm also a realist and have been extremely critical of the club in terms of recruitment, player development, coaching and off-field management (especially financial) over the last 10-15 years in particular. This club should be far greater now than what it is. We were in every sense key rivals with Collingwood and Carlton in the 70's and early 80's, but lost our way while Essendon and teh Interstate clubs went past us......

Debate and constructively question all aspects of the club as much as you like. Done in the right way, that can be very valuable. Being negative just for the sake ot it is a waste of time.

Well written Tigers2011. If you take one side without fail, you lose credibility. And it is amazing how many people see the glass half empty.

what the hell are we doing chasing 31 yr olds with a list like this. if nothing else the rfc have totally abandoned a youth policy for a quick fix. they want to hope they make finals or some real questions will be asked of the rabble.

Claw,

The youth policy was abandoned in this case because another young player was not going to help Wallace in this, a big year for him personally.
Quite simply, if we make finals he stays....if we don't, it will be hard to justify him staying.

I have been a strong advocate of Cousins NOT being drafted by the club, not only because of his drug habit, but more importantly for us...from purely a footballing point of view...he is over 30 years of age, has had bad hammys now for a while as well, and has won everything there is to win in footy.
So is the hunger there?
Now on top of the pure footballing perspective....you add a serious drug a habit as well a the intense media exposure and over the top scrutiny Cousins and the club will be under now, all which could so easily blow up in our faces (The headlines on the front of today's Herald Sun just an example of what we should expect)....then I think I can justify my concern over his drafting.

Having said that though....its been done...Cousins is now a Tiger....and for what its worth, I may come on here as frustrated as everybody else when our players play poorly and deserve a spray, but I'm certainly not going to give Cousins a spray before he even kicks a ball with us.
He is now wearing a black jumper with a yellow sash on it and will get my full support....because the club is always bigger than the individual.

Ben Cousins failing and being delisted would justify original concerns on drafting him but this is also a time where the club is bigger than my own ego....and while it would be nice to come on here and say 'told you so' if he flops....I would much rather people on here give it to me in spades as Cuz holds up the Premiership Cup this season or next while wearing tigers jumper.

This is one time I really hope I am wrong.

So while I hear your concerns about Cousins...lets give him a go Claw and see what happens, eh? 8)

Livers, I'm having a massive conflict of conscience here and I believe my fingers may in fact bleed as I write the next line ...

I agree with you.

Livers...One thing I DON'T doubt about Cousins is his hunger. His proven that in the last 2-3 weeks. Finally. More to the point, people like Cousins are freaks. As long as he intends to run out on a footy field that hunger will be eating him up. That is how he became one of the hardest runners and trainers in the AFL, by having that hunger more than most elite players.

I hear your doubts and what his been through sure knocks motivation/focus, but he needs a positive outlet now, he appears to be burning to get back and prove his name, do what he loves, etc. When you love something as much as he did footy and finally get back to it, I believe he'll be just as hard working if not even more so to what he has been in the past. Accolades don't make the truly driven rest on their laurels, they always want more. His almost wiped his accolades reputation wise with his fall from grace, I bet he's feeling he needs to prove himself all over again and stamp his authority on the game again. Wether he can or not is another matter, I'm merely addressing his hunger.

One thing that should be stated here, Craig Cameron says he is in great shape aerobically and conditioning/strength wise. His just been lacking in actual footy training/skills/ball work etc. That shows something, he hasn't let himself go like most who get into addictions and been consumed by decadence to the point he wasted away.

No, in my mind if Cousins fails himself it will be because of the pressure/his personal demons or his body (soft tissue wise) will fail him. It won't be because he doesn't have the hunger. He's put himself through hell to get back to AFL, if the hunger wasn't truly there he would have walked away by now.

Fantastic Post.

A 1 year deal is absolutely correct.
Anything more would have been ludicrous so at least some common sense has prevailed.

Whilst it's well known I've been against his recruitment, he's a Tiger now and Ben deserves every chance to strut his stuff.

Cousin's is a superstar on the field and that's never been my issue.
If he can put it together off it then he'll be an asset.

I am now looking forward to seeing what he can do.

I was one who was not keen on having Ben Cousins come to Tigerland, but now that he is a player at the club I will support him just like I would for Richo, Cotch, Pettifer and Jordy while they wears a Tiger jumper and hope he helps leads us to our ultimate success.

It is easy to caught in the buzz of the moment with his arrival but my fear was that it is a trainwreck waiting to happen. I looked that he was 31 next year with some hamstring worries and may only play 20-25 games for the club.I believe he is not on his second but probably fourth or fifth considering his previous gangland associations with Gardiner, his car running scenario, his departure in March 07 and then his sacking last year.
I really hope though that this work as both Ben and the club can afford to have this risk fail. It would be good PR for Ben to stay close to Joel and perhaps do some soup kitchen nights with him and work in the community. It will give him good perspictive as what could happen and keep generate good press for him.

I do feel sorry for Craig Cameron who was put out as a front person for this and made to look silly for the journalists as I believe who did not want to recruit Cousins and wanted to stick to youth policy and build the list as he is clearly thinking for the future but when he faced oppostion from a coach who is coaching for his future next year, a president who is chasing a sponsor and wants immediate success and interfering off field former player who wants to be a good humantrian and please the world, Cameron had to bow their needs.

I hope that Sheedy now that he has his wish leaves the on field structure of the club to those better qualified and concentrates on the off field marketing as next year his project will probably be that Andrew Krakouer needs some love once released from prison and deserves a second chance and we should recruit him.
Good luck Ben I hope you helps bring us some success as we will all be supporting you.

Interesting four players you chose there mk33.
So does this mean you see him as the lifeblood of the club, the future of the club, a broken down hack, or the biggest mistake we ever made?

I've already congratulated Liverpool on his attitude re Cousins the Tiger. We all have to put our faith in the club now it has gotten us into this position. More than anything I was comforted by the details of the 6 hour session it had with Cousins at Cameron's father place recently. To understand how they worked as a team to professionally assess Ben and his readiness to accept an opportunity at the Tigers. Also to know how Benny Gale, Kevin Sheedy and Gerard Healey are playing a part. Finally we have a club working as a professional team, an extended team if you like.

Is it an impossible ask to expect much from Cousins as a player? For 99% of players I would say YES. Only a champion will be able to overcome the odds faced by him. It's a term so loosely used these days......... my definition of a champion is "someone who succeeds when they are not expected to". The first champion I ever saw was Tulloch. There haven't been too many since.

Is Cousins a champion? Not yet. Brownlow, premiership, 6 All-Australians, 4 WCE best-and-fairests etc etc. Potentially he is. I believe he can be. Why? I watched his return game for WCE in 2007 Rd 16, his first game all year, and it was all heart and class. http://www.finalsiren.com/MatchDetails.asp?GameID=4603&Code=215d8c37870d3c526936f3d7331e88bc

Thanks to RFC for giving Benny the chance to prove he is a champion at overcoming massive hurdles. If he is we will all be rewarded. If not, then he is like 99% of other footballers......... mere mortals.

This club should be far greater now than what it is. We were in every sense key rivals with Collingwood and Carlton in the 70's and early 80's, but lost our way while Essendon and teh Interstate clubs went past us.

However in a number of areas this club is now improving. For a start, the club is now profitable and hopefully the debt will be decreasing. With better finances come more resources to improve the key operational areas of the club (as mentioned above). Miller is gone and while I have some doubts about Cameron, at least the right types of players were recruited in the recent drafting period. My perception is that we now have an improved list, and it's incumbent on Wallace to get the best out of them. Our results will dictate his future and so be it.

Not every player on a list can be/is a champion - the salary cap alone sees to that. While Johnson has probably gone on one year too long and I'm also no fan of Pettifer and McMahon, by and large the player list has improved significantly. It does have youth and structured balance (see Phantom's recent post). The older players you list all still have on-field value, while many of the younger ones either haven't been given sufficient opportunity or have been set-back by injury. Polak's had an unfortunate accident while Coughlan is a super player badly affected by footy related injuries.

As members and supporters, it's our role to support the club financially and emotionally, and influence continued on and off-field improvement as much as we can so that we can gain maximum enjoyment for ourselves and have a better club to hand on to our kids and the next generation of Tiger supporters. We certainly have the right to criticise when the club is not pursuing the correct path and there's been many times when I've felt the need to do that. However at the end of the day, for this club to be successful and become what we all want it to be, we've got to get behind it.

Life is short. None of us can ever undo the mistakes that we've made today. We can only learn from them and do better tomorrow. This club has made many mistakes over the past 25 years, some because we followed the old, outdated model of the 70's when it was successful. I would hope that these lessons have been well and truly learnt and we can now re-build it bit by bit. Constant negativity, without any reasoned balance, will get this club nowhere.

Debate and constructively question all aspects of the club as much as you like. Done in the right way, that can be very valuable. Being negative just for the sake ot it is a waste of time.

I know a lot of people have said this is the best post they've read, and I'm going to be another one. This is a ripper.

Finally someone calling it like it is... yes we've made some mistakes.. also we've been held back in the last 25 years by a number of teams getting a large priority of players over us which hurts in terms of continual growth.

We've built really well over the last few years and now we are poised to take something from it. Now is the time for Tiges fans to get unequivocally behind their club because I tell you what it's going to be a SUPER EXCITING time to be at the MCG for the next few years.

Can't wait for the roar!
