2024 Training With The Ooze Crew

wait, so you dont want top heavy, but you want 2 ruckmen?
Nankervis is still a very good ruckman but because of his aggression and midfield clearance work. Naismith compliments him. Bauer and Balta are mobile and well skilled. As a group not overly tall or lacking in any other respect.

Kozi is insurance for Lynch and will be key forward if Lynch suffers a further injury.
imo our best available, not top heavy and as fast as we have seen over the last 10, doesn't include Koz, or indeed some of our old favourites.

F Bauer Lynch Cumberland
HF Bolton Balta Baker

C Banks Rioli D, Brown
R Nankervis Taranto Martin,

with the bench to possibly be made up of Dow, Hopper, Naismith and Prestia.

May as well add further prediction.

HB Trezise Vlastuin Short
B Young Gibcus Broad

(Not in my best 22 are Graham, Grimes, Koschitzke, McIntosh, Miller, Ross and Ryan). Pickett??
Kosi will be playing, nothing surer

apparently Bauer mentioned to someone on here that he'll be training down back as well
Especially believable if Balta goes forward. Thinking Broady plays a bit more key position allowing Brown to play his role. Bauer would then be a backup to Broad/Grimes while Young plays big stopper. Does sound thin but Balta and maybe Kozi are there.

Caught the last 45 mins of training. Traffic was horrendous so took me a long time to get to Punt Rd.

There were other watchers there and I got some input from them. The feedback was that Monday and Friday are the intense sessions and Wednesday slightly lower key.

What I saw was
- The second half of what was called a competitive drill which was end to end (grey vs black). There was a real focus on skills, hitting targets by foot. After about 10 mins the skills dropped off (kicks missed, marks dropped, etc), play was halted, players called in and a sharper, better skilled session ensued.
- The drill focused on round the outside (but on a narrowed field) when needed but through the middle when possible. Dusty made same absolute ridiculous passes. Playing half back. Brown and Sons also stood out as dis Matt C and Shai. Matt C provided one pass, low and hard into traffic and hit Shai on the chest in between 3 defenders. It was sublime. Miller and Koshitzke got physical. Ben blocked/shepherded Jacob (possibly too aggressively) and a wrestle and push and shove ensued. When possible full strength tackles were applied. Dusty absolutely manhandled Shai in one. Fun to watch.
- Maurice also did well.
- They then did a kicking drill really focussing on short sharp kicks. and hitting players on the hands or chest.
- Then some structure kick in to the forward 50, ball to ground, shark the ball and snap.
- Then run throughs. 15 seconds to run 80, 90 or 100 meters. Eight or 10. I lost count. Maurice ended up in the 90 meter group after starting in the 80 meter group and won most of the run throughs. He looked better.

- Josh G. Jacob B, Jack R and our SSP forward from WA did run throughs. I was told that Josh had done work with the larger group in the first hour.

- A few of the forwards finished with a fun drill of having to bash through a tackling bag, pick a ground ball and snap, all from about 25 meters out on a 45 degree angle. Lefau seemed to enjoy it. Hitting a solid object and then picking up the ball is natural for him.

Well done Hong Kong. All in the heat!!

Looks like Ooze is really shaking off the dynasty complacency of the last 3 seasons. Really great to see.

Great to hear skills have been a big focus especially kicking. Dropped off bigtime last 2 seasons.

They also did a kicking drill before @HKTigerB got there called (EKP), 3 groups in each 3rd of the ground, mainly short sharp keeping off type kicks and the occasional long kick to target to switch play. 100% there is way more focus on kicking, hopefully it bares fruit.
Wondering what EKP is short for? maybe Exact Kicking Precision?
I will agree with HK that JNR is looking somewhat better.
My boy Tom Brown continues his promising pre-season.
Kosi and Miller had a bit of a coming together, for just a moment they didn't think too much of each other:cool:
Oliver Hayes-Brown did not like my Wolfmother nickname and has shaved it all off :( ;)
As HK mentioned a few boys that they are easing back in mainly train the Monday and Friday and also more players are managed on the Wednesday but for most, today was still a solid session.
Samson Ryan took a couple of good grabs and pin point by foot.
Balta has come back leaner.
Bauer was one of the managed players somewhat today but rest assured he is pretty much back in full training as in previous sessions he looked good, (this is a revelation because I have never highlighted him before and when I had I would say his is poor and sloppy at training, my opinion later validated by Dimma who publicly stated Bauer was not a good trainer).
No Nank today and don't think I spotted DRioli, (hard to tell as no number wearing and they all train in black singlets and half in caps).
A sneaky shout out to Kaleb Smith, (who is manly training Monday's and Friday's), he has showed some impressive snippets in previous sessions, run and carry off half back has been excellent.

The attention to the skills is the best news. Maybe I can take the chicken wire down from protecting the TV screen if they start getting that right

Love the reports about the younger guys, no wonder Yze seems enthused about the youth during his pressers! Nice to see Miller finally get some mongrel, only took 6 years. I reckon his best position is down back, although he could just be filling in there if Young and Gibcus aren't in full training. Anyway, he’ll be handy depth to plug a hole at either end if we need

Miller has a role in my view. Won't always be best 22 but when you can play Ruck, Back and forward it makes you a valuable utility player... I have wanted him to train as a mid. Not because he will make it as a mid, but because it makes him more useful overall.
