2024 Training With The Ooze Crew

I absolutely see your point. I am of the position that Balta doesn't need the added pressure that playing in the backline goes along with it.
As I said I don’t have a problem trying him forward again but some posting about it has been quite critical of him as a back man.
I think that is understating his work down back

Agree. Hopefully he is just training up forward as a contingency in case Lynch isn’t ready for the early rounds, or, god forbid, gets injured again

It's also not saying much about the club's confidence that Kozi can do the job.
Hmm I think it’s separate from that. I think they’ll pencil in Kosi as second ruck/forward. If Lynch is fit, maybe Balta plays back. Or maybe we go with a 3 tall set up. Options

Yeah I was wondering about the potential 3 tall set up. Is it to top heavy?? Having 5 on the bench now helps with flexibility, but I’d stick with the 2 talls personally.

They haven’t changed it to 5 yet have they? I know there are always discussions around the bench set up but I don’t think they’ve changed anything yet. Balta is pretty athletic and quick so I wouldn’t hate 3 talls, but agree it’s a bit top heavy

He’s no JVR
JVR is a promising young player but I don’t know if he has the size to be the big banana. A recent article said McDonald is heading down back, so JVR will have to stand up as he’ll be beside Petty (1 game wonder, had to be against us of course), Ben Brown (cooked) and Schache (spud). There’ll always be scrutiny on Tom Brown as we picked him before JVR when we needed a key forward, but from what I’ve seen from Brown, I’m confident he’ll be a good player for us

JVR is virtually the same size as JR8 who managed to be a pretty effective forward without being a 'big banana' type, What was it, 787 goals or something?
That lesser size can be more mobile and agile, producing more majors from ground level. JVR looks promising but long way to go; worth a risk though.

Yes but he was an outlier, had amazing footy smarts and the use of his body was second to none.

Sorry I digressed in the previous post. But here are comparisons of Kosi’s season as a 21 year old, and JVR’s season as a 20 year old. Very similar stats. Also, the Hawks finished 15th in 2021 and Dees top 4 this year. Kosi has shown he can produce a good season, let’s hope a fresh start works wonders for himIMG_4432.pngIMG_4433.jpeg

Probably more doubts on Lynch than Kosi.

Balta could be Lynch insurance.

Lynch and Balta. Kozi would make three. So why is Balta training forward if they're confident Kozi can play that role?
We need options and back ups for all positions

We have Nank, Naismith, Ryan, Koschitzke, Lynch, Balta and Bauer who are in the mix for KPP, ruck or a mixture of both.
You would expect 4 would play every week, 5 at the most. Kozy, Balta and Ryan can all play 3rd KPP and back up ruck.

It gives us flexibility

If we play Balta forward there is a massive reliance on Gibcus and Young to hold down the key defensive posts. I assume Balta and even Kozy are the backups for that.
