2024 Training With The Ooze Crew

Do we have any update on Liam Fawcett? Pretty sure he didn't take part in the scratch match.

I have to say that if it wasn't for the likes of @caesar (and his Minions):ROFLMAO: I'd have no idea as to the state of health of most of the list.
Yes the media will tell us Dusty is being rested and Tom's progressed to running/kicking but there is bugger all on the club's website.

It's disgraceful really.
Liam has a back issue which kept him out I believe

the modern HHF often works off the instruction to clear out.

meaning they spend large periods of the game High, as the role implies;

picking up opponents midfielders in certain zones, often in the defensive 50.

and when the ball is in their attacking 50, they clear out, take defenders away from the KPF, negating their ability to be 3rd man up, or block leading lanes.

Goals are not the KPI of these players.

if they snag 1-2, great.

wizards like Eddie betts or nick Watson or $hai bolton are never going to clear out, even if they are told to, which they won't be.

its role players like Jason Castagne and Melee Mansell.

I don't think MRJ is up to the level, but I think Mansell has the qualities to be a regular under Yze.

he's quick, tough and disciplined
Great analysis.. Especially with the role that George played, it was easy to criticise him because the numbers didn't look good but he was a key to the structure of the game plan, running up & down the empty side of the ground to fill important space, not glamorous but critical for the team.

I watched the 2017 GF over the weekend & one of the main reasons we won is because we took away the centre corridor & the empty side of the ground as an attacking option for them. I have to admit that I only recognise this because there was commentary around it & when trying to select the best players it was difficult because there was an even spread amongst the ball getters.

I guess my point is there are no stats for team play & us ball trackers (me included) miss critical structures in the all important game plan, & those that are holding that plan together.

Food for thought..

2017 George marked the ball a lot inside 50. The 2 Dans were very fast too. And could hit the scoreboard. Nothing better than scoreboard pressure. 2017 fwd evolved into Caddy, Towner and Jack R (30 goals from Butler, 25 Rioli, 26 George)

Butler gets injured, plays poorly, dropped to VFL, picked up by the saints.

George is joined by MRJ & Cumbo . Castagna's goal kicking became ABSYMAL, but never dropped never moved until the Gold Coast game. 2022.

look at Dan Rioli...successful move out of the fwd line. Butler, Higgins and Stengle leave to play more attacking small fwds.

Maybe Dimma/Mini didn't apapt team selections to the stand rule.

I hope like hell we've seen the end of "role" players. Give me guys that can footy. MRJ can't. Cumbo maybe. Looks like Green is tracking well.

Small fwd is a hard position to play, I'd be heavily rotating players through there.

Hardwick's Richmond invented some NFL-type roles specifically for the MCG I reckon.

KMac's job was to run 15km, often at 34km/hr, into empty space,

yeah, get there quickly and often to keep the opposition where we could defend them.

utterly selfless and super important role

I see him a little more as a high forward. Running out to support the wings, make space for the talls, follow a running defender, but turn and get the ball back inside 50, or run hard through the 50 as an option.

Not necessarily the crumbing forward type.
Spot on. This is how he described his role to us at a function last year. Definitely not a crumbling forward.
I got the impression he is more comfortable in defence (or midfield?) with accountability for a direct opponent.

Well he's made the list, now it's simply a matter of form and fitness over the course of the year for a few big forwards. I was more impressed with Lefau's efforts during the game than I was with Koshitsme's so already there's a possible situation during the year.

I agree particularly with your last comment. It was his speed at the ball and the man, that impressed me most.

If Lynch is fit to return for the Carlton game it may be that a selection of Koschitzke for the GC game would be seen as short sighted as he would likely have to make way for Lynch, after only one week.

Hard to see ML playing game 0 but maybe that is the way it will turn.

That’s becoming a recurrent theme as to how we are looking after the guys drafted to the Club. While the lure from home would always remain strong we seem to be going ok at keeping interstate players at the Club. To date.
Is it just me or do we have more than others from interstate?

We have Bolton, Pickett, broad, baker, McIntosh, smith and Green from WA. Graham, Fawcett, McAuliffe and Coulthard from SA. Hopper and Bauer from NSW. Cumberland and Ryan from QLD , Banks, Nank, Mansell and Campbell from Tassie and the Rioli boys from NT. Hayes-Brown might also be from WA, he played for the wildcats in the NBL and I had a feeling Mate is from Sydney?

That’s about half our list. Maybe it’s the same everywhere, not sure

Seems like we do doesn’t it. And credit to the club and culture, and the recruiters doing the work because (thus far 🤞) we haven’t had anyone leave citing home sickness. Maybe Stengle a few years ago but that’s it

Reece Conca maybe ?
Ah yes, I think so. Just looked it up and we got the same compensation for him as we did for Brandon Ellis, and Chol. Geez they stiffed us big time with the Ellis compo. Guess it evens out after the bargain we got for Vickery, and subsequent draft selection #shai😍😍

The interesting thing about those two is that both came back to Melbourne. Chol as a player and Conca as a coach at Melbourne.

I reckon clark is well aware of the vic private school premium @tigersnake and I bang on about.

and he doesn't pay overs.

bit of draft moneyball

doesn't exclude Vic kids, just means we get the unfashionable ones.

and we compete with 2 clubs each in other states, rather than 10.

the bias is real: 2023 champs Allies demolished all comers;

at the draft: 15 VC, 16 VM, 9 Allies (including 5 academy kids, so 4 allies drafted on the open market, a quarter of either vastly inferior vic side)

its proximity - more blokes in north pace puffers watch Vic kids.

Clarke knows this and invests in people on the ground beyond Melbourne

I'd love to see all clubs list breakdown on public V private schooling, controlled for scholarships at year 10

The umpires will be all over dimmas orchestrated infringements , I’d expect we should be the lucky recipients, makes perfect sense than some crackpot conspiracy against the y&b
Really. We'll see soon enough. Dimma might have just morphed into an AFL lovechild ... if he can take the Suns to the promised land.
