2024 Training With The Ooze Crew

which part of pressure forward don't people get?

its like hiring a plumber, and admonishing them for not laying any bricks.
Yeah nah the commentary is on his set shot accuracy.
His number of goals per game is moot and a distraction

I don’t get that ‘measure’ and that the role is that one dimensional - pressure is just one element.
Creating scoring opportunities and hitting the scoreboard consistently is another.
A good plumber can lay bricks..?

Indeed - but few talk about how many times a player sprints 100m to where the ball isnt going to go.

Over the years - this is a foundational whipping boy skill

Brando, kmac, george, marlion, now Melee.

In the 1980's, it would be a fair criticism,

In the 2020's, theres no other way to dice it, than a rudimentary understanding of the game

I reckon we're underrating Mansell to pigeon-hole him as a pressure forward.

Post 2020, I've got no time for the pressure forward. Too easy to kick around. But, that doesn't mean you don't need your forwards to pressure, and run.

But Mansell has improved as a footballer over the last 18 months. Not a pressure forward, a footballer. He was scrappy when he started, but he's showed that he can also create, hit the target, fill space, and play.

Footballers who can run and hurt are the prototype. Mansell's got himself to that level. It's a shame he was hurt this morning. I imagine he was pencilled in to round 1.

Or round zero, or round -i or whatever the *smile*.

Inside tip:
Prestia is fine and good to go. He may play next week, but the club know he's in tip top shape, and debating what the point is playing preseason at all. His strain was very minor, and the rest was very much precautionary.
Hopper hasn't had a preseason like this since early GWS days. Is very confident in his body. Looks to be past his injuries as a result.
Bolton has been very dominant internally, his fitness is highest it's been in his time at the club. They're hoping he can keep the mental toughness/focus for the year as they're thinking AA calibre season, possibly award level year.
Dow, insiders wondering why it's taken so long to to get this from him. They always thought he was talented. Potentially feeling more support from coaching staff this year, but they feel he'll hopefully play all season Injury gods permitting. Very excited by what he brings.
Naismith surprising and some wondering if Nank will be able to fight him off performance wise over the course of a year.
That's all I could get before my time was up.

Fair. The collective output of this group will determine how hard our dip is.

Let's do under or overs of the combined group.

  • Pick 9: Josh Gibcus.
  • Pick 17: Tom Brown.
  • Pick 28: Tyler Sonsie.
  • Pick 29: Sam Banks.
  • Pick 30: Judson Clarke.
I'm setting the market at 74.5 combined games played in 2024. Do you take the under or the over?
Anyone want to reconsider after today?

Still reckon it'll be unders, but it'll be close.

Potentially 20 each from Gibcus, Brown and Banks. Can Sonsie and Clarke play 15 between them? Potentially. I reckon your line is right on the expectation of where they will be.

Said when he first came on I'd love to see Mykelti rag doll Lever. Didn't take him long to stick the big hip n arse into Lever n fold him up. :) Did some strong pack work n nailed a blistering run down tackle, just missed catching another. Won't complain if we offer him a crack on the list, might only play 6 to 10 games in the ones but nothing wrong with having a big fast physical beast hovering around the fringes of the 22 just in case.

Scoreboard pressure?

I'm a Mansell fan but didn't rate him or MRJ last season.

Graham used to be the "pressure act " king but was overtaken by Tarranto.
I actually like Mansell, but just don't think he or MRJ hold their spots.

Brown and Banks have apparently had pretty good preseasons. Brown in particular firming early to take over from Grimes.
I wasn’t at Casey but from what I saw yesterday neither looked particularly comfortable. Both now behind Green and McAuliffe imo.

the modern HHF often works off the instruction to clear out.

meaning they spend large periods of the game High, as the role implies;

picking up opponents midfielders in certain zones, often in the defensive 50.

and when the ball is in their attacking 50, they clear out, take defenders away from the KPF, negating their ability to be 3rd man up, or block leading lanes.

Goals are not the KPI of these players.

if they snag 1-2, great.

wizards like Eddie betts or nick Watson or $hai bolton are never going to clear out, even if they are told to, which they won't be.

its role players like Jason Castagne and Melee Mansell.

I don't think MRJ is up to the level, but I think Mansell has the qualities to be a regular under Yze.

he's quick, tough and disciplined

Assuming for the moment Lefau makes the list and goes on to do well and demand selection. And assuming Lynch regains full fitness, where do they all fit?
