2024 Draft Thread

I keep coming back to the north deal

2 and f1 for 6 and 11. North could get taru and Armstrong and complete their list.

We get lalor and fos and then a lottery ticket. I actually think north rise next year and that pick is between 5-8.

If we had have been able to hang onto one this picks we sent to the lions we could have included a late sweetener.

He was a much better player than you guys give him credit for, I doubt Smillie could do everything in that clip.

Otherwise I think us taking Taru at 6 is good business as well.

Lot of talk this year if a good key defender was more important than a good key. Not 100% sure on this but they are bloody important. We had three in our era of rance grimes Astbury (drafted forward turned defender). We would have gibcus and taru. Not a bad start.

You want a tall, here's ya man.

Played most of the season in the ruck, but he'll be a forward.

Check out his mobility.

Not a chance for me Jackson was a hard nut tagger and poor skills.

Smillie is so underrated here at 10 or 11 bargain
If Smillie can notch up 500 possessions in a season and kick 18 goals then he's made it to Jackson levels. That's 23 possessions a match, 2.9 clangers & 9 Brownlow votes for good measure.

Not bad for a hardnut tagger with poor skills.

he did that once in his tenth year...career averages were 18.4 touches and 0.39 goals. 17 career brownlow votes. not sure what the point is with these weird comparisons.

Well, I think if you are hedging your bets on a player with minimal ground impact then peak Daniel Jackson is a pretty reasonable benchmark. People are assuming Smillie will suddenly churn out Green type productivity but I can't see that, not for awhile anyway. At the moment he projects as a low possession type, getting to 30+ disposals not impossible but it's unusual to see a massive spike in production from juniors to seniors, particularly with this class of player.

Tauru is also a great competitor, the forward thinking might be a stretch but grabbing an intercept defender not such a terrible outcome. I'm a bit more optimistic than most when I look at his forward credentials, his set shot kicking is a lot safer than Naughton if we're drawing comparisons. His leap is elite so he'll be dangerous on the lead and should be able to protect his airspace from close checking defenders. At the moment his production is below par but this is the reason he's being spoken about as a 6-12 prospect. This is an upside pick but one with a very safe floor.
It would be a brave but not foolish. Take him at one.

With what?
Their first? Its likely top 5.
Would you give up a top 5 future to get our 18?

The question is not which clubs want a piece of the draft, but who has capital.

Some clubs can do a swap of futures, say Adelaide & Dogs plus Dogs 17 (i dont think that happens btw). But we're likely #1 next year and no way we swap.
If the player they want is there and they desperately want him .then yes

Here's what I think is a pretty typical Armstrong game. In this little package you can check his catching. Can he catch? Can he jump? Does he take front position? Is he quick? Anybody seeing any weaknesses or limitations? Watch 20 games. You'll see em.

After we examine the characteristics of Armstrong's R14 game we are left with another question - how many did he kick? (Did he lay any off?)

I probably shouldn't comment without seeing him play in person, but here it goes.

My instant reaction to this one video is that his natural game looks incompatible with the modern game. If the limited evidence available here is representative of his broader work, then he's a risky archetype of an already risky position that's recently become less clearly defined (tall forward). His near absence of new school traits means he should, in theory, be easily neutralised by 2v1s. He also looks oddly uncoordinated in one play (like a ruckman), drops a lot of marks (especially in congestion, which will only get harder at AFL level), struggles to ever capitalise on a long kick, mostly marks short kicks to his chest (which small players can do - his height is redunant and not used as an advantage), and in one play he takes forever to make a simple decision to handball to a free teammate standing right in front of him while they're both free... this guy presents as your classic, traditional tall forward who will probably be a disappointment in the modern game.

Still, I do give him points for not being a ruckman.

Just 6 days + 45 minutes to go....
Please hurry the *smile* up draft night.

I swear, it sounds like folks are taking sides with one player they want, and another player is the equivalent of the scumwood, where its a game of throwing as much mud to make "their guy" sound better.
So much negativity, and they've not even been drafted. God help the kid or his family that looks at this thread if we draft em...
Shame we can't look at a kid and think of what they *could * do for us, instead of what they can't. 6 very long days to go.

I reckon the tall forwards in this draft are the most overrated group in it. There'll be one or two that are successful because weight of numbers says that.

Tauru is the only one I can really hook into with any enthusiasm.

The rest...not so sure about them.

Gun.

Loved the way he played during his last couple of seasons and thought his mindset was a huge positive to the changes taking place at the club during that time. Change is hard, and guys like him and Chris Newman stood out coming out of dark times. Might also be the next Benny Gale.

Based on last 2 years ladders, North would need 10 or 11 wins to be Pick 5 to 8 next year. That's 7-8 more wins than this year. To put that in perspective Hawks won 7 more this year than last year. I think North are safely bottom 4 next year but of course anything can, and does, happen.
