2024 Draft Thread

You know what, I now agree. It probably should be an easy decision. Bizarre it’s not based on everything he has done this year. Classy ball magnet that never fails.

Absolutely, the way he moves in the content ducking and weaving, blind turns very evasive and comes across super professional. Finds so much ball will be able to set up plenty. Watching his highlights I find it hard how we cannot pick him. He will be a star

If we already had the core group and were fortunate to have pick 1 then sure go fo Lalor, but we are at the start of a rebuild and need to balance risk/reward. Jagga safe bet and proven performer.

Im not sure how true this is. Probably 80% of kids drafted would have played basketball at some point, plenty of them would have played til close to draft time. Those numbers would be even higher for rucks-
case in point 1st google search i tried was CCJ- he played a good level u16 bball.
CCJ needs to be removed from any data pool, he has wasted 4 years of development being groomed as a forward, this has been a classic case of mismanagement. The guys who have chosen pro football over pro basketball almost always come with upside, that's the key point here, they are new to the game so you can expect a steady improvement with their skills. Dodson still looks awkward when he kicks but I doubt it's terminal, good coaching will eventually bring fluency to his action.

As for the idea we'll trade 24 into a lovely future first... Who?
Agree, only a team who really believes they might finish at the top of the table next year would consider a swap so, after compensation and father/son & academy picks slide in, it won't end up a great deal for us. Only hope really of securing a high pick next year is the North's 2nd & F1 for 6 & 18 or thereabouts and Tigers are not keen to give up #6.

Agree, if a guy can’t take a one grab mark at 18 he’ll never learn. It’s why I’m bullish on Tauru if he slipped to 6. He would be one of about 5 on our list with good hands. Balta, Nank, Floss, Lynch, Gybcus, have I missed anyone?
If a guy can run, jump and take a one grab mark, he’s got a career either forward or back.

Tauru is also a great competitor, the forward thinking might be a stretch but grabbing an intercept defender not such a terrible outcome. I'm a bit more optimistic than most when I look at his forward credentials, his set shot kicking is a lot safer than Naughton if we're drawing comparisons. His leap is elite so he'll be dangerous on the lead and should be able to protect his airspace from close checking defenders. At the moment his production is below par but this is the reason he's being spoken about as a 6-12 prospect. This is an upside pick but one with a very safe floor.

Dotson link to Richmond is super strong. Was in yesterdays age and was floated by Twomey earlier in the week.

I'm a fan. Has mobility, a ground game and a good leap. Someone line up his numbers next to CCJ and tell me they aren't the same, that's my only nerves around him.
One is a ruckman and the other was a useless midfielder. No comparison. By the way Dodson has better stats.

There will be 15 clubs who legitimately reckon they can play finals in 2025 and one of the other 3 in North reckons they are climbing up the ladder as well. 7 of those 15 will miss out their F1s will be a top 10 pick. The trick is picking the right one(s).

It’s very difficult

To me it is very likely Brisbane, Sydney and Geelong will play finals in 2025
Then there is a group of Hawthorn, Carlton, Giants, Freo and Port who would expect to
Then there is another group of Suns, Collingwood, Melbourne, Bulldogs who could go either way
Then Essendon, st Kilda and Adelaide who probably won’t but could surprise.

I reckon if we target Essendon who have theirs and Melbourne’s F1 and St kilda and Adelaide the chances are it is a top 12 pick at worst. Even north’s F1 may be available even if we don’t trade for pick 2.

Exactly right Sin - 15 clubs will be expecting to make finals. That obviously doesn't go into 8.

You can obviously target who you think will finish lower and there are a few obvious one's. But you know what it is very difficult to predict who you can bank on to finish high up.

Here's some examples just over the last 3 years of some big falls:

2024: Coll 1st to 9th
2024: Melb 5th to 14th
2023: Geel 1st to 12th
2022: GWS 7th to 16th
2022: Port 3rd to 11th
2021: Coll 8th to 17th
2021: Rich 1st to 12th

Reckon nearly nobody would have predicted those falls. Injuries, coaches under pressure, form then confidence etc.

If we are giving up a pick say 23 or 25. That is the worst it will be next year. But you are in the raffle to get a pick much higher.
