2024 Draft Thread

Because we have got rid of any of our flexibility in one shot. I don’t mind 6 picks in the end if that’s where we end up but one of our great opportunities is to get big value for a later pick on the night.
Its about the quality of players we draft

#1 , #2 , #6 , #18 , #20 , #24

Lalor - FOS - Jagga/Smillie - Whitlock - Hynes - Faull
plus F1 added

I agree. If he was 187 instead of 195 hed be spoken about as a 20's pick
Every year there's a K-Mart Cripps and they all struggle to become AFL regulars. This class of player rarely gets going at the top level - Jackson Hately, RCD, Tom Bell, Harley Balic, Charlie Constable, Will Setterfield, Matthew Kennedy, Will Brodie, Ed Allan.............................

Maybe 10 years ago these guys would be useful but 90% of the gun mids are short & nimble, the taller types need to have extraordinary ball winning ability to survive, Josh Kennedy was such a player but he had the big advantage of playing on a smaller ground where the contested players usually thrive. The MCG isn't the place you just move from scrum to scrum, big chance Smillie gets found out at AFL level.

After watching Gettable it sounds like our top four picks are locked in and we are highly unlikely to do any trading up. From 18 onwards we will starting fielding offers for future picks etc. Unfortunately the FOS / Lalor double act is looking very unlikely now.

Spot on, have a look at the Phantom draft, we miss out on Jack Whitlock but can still get his twin brother. May as well park some chips at the top end, those are the players who win you matches.
Players will slide Bully always a few surprises those 10 and 11 a gold

In a world of unknowns we'd be mad to overlook the best key position prospect in the draft. What a beautiful scenario for Richmond, the downside minimal as Tauru surely becomes a defender if he busts up forward. This is what I'm harping on about when I refer to managing risk, this particular scenario is so low risk that it would be negligent to let Tauru slide.
Bully solely he needs to be forward or else he doesn't fit our bill our defence with Gibcus, Balta and a few others has the spine already

In your opinion of course. It was mentioned last year that Tigers purposely accumulated lower draft picks last year knowing they would trade them for higher picks this year. So Tigers saw value in trading the lower picks for #20 (I agree in this draft) particularly after we received all the extra picks in player trades. Again why then throw away points that have value into the neverland that benefits neither team?

Anyway, we'll know soon. If Tigers do bid at #1, I'll be wrong but I still wouldn't understand why you'd throw the points away.
On face value it does look that way but we still don’t know how pick 20 ends up. It could be a future first and a second round pick, maybe a 200 game player if we keep it, have we overpaid then ? Still a lot to play out. On a side note I think we are no chance of bidding on Ashcroft. Twomey is expecting three onwards.

I dont reckon we week bid on Ashcroft at 1, not because of some secret deal with the Lions, but because we princely haven't interviewed him and won't have spent much time watching, instead we will be spending our energy on guys we are actually choosing between.
Likewise we won't bid early on Marshall because we wont have spent much time trying to rank him.
If we havn't interviewed Ashcroft (I have no idea) could it be because we already know sufficient about him and his wish to get to Brisbane, or did he refuse?

Ditto Marshall. I have only seen highlights but I posted some time ago that he looked like a very good player and that an early hit on Ashcroft could easily lead to us getting him.

No idea really. Don’t think Blair would simply write him off because Brisb say no.

Bully solely he needs to be forward or else he doesn't fit our bill our defence with Gibcus, Balta and a few others has the spine already
Swing Balta forward if he's a bust in the forward line but honestly, I reckon his chances are infinitely better than anything we currently have on the list.

Big Willie Smillie isn't really one of Leysy's - in top 6 to 7 anyway. From than onwards yep absolutely.

But there seems to be a bit of a hive mind on his kicking developing on here? What is that based on? Highlights? Kicking efficiency?

Seen a reasonable amount of him (some more than Leysy) and confident his kicking is fine.

He gets very good distance and actually has really good touch for a big man. He generally weights his kicks very well. Would class him as a good to very good kick.

There are reasons to put some slows on him, but his foot skills aint one of them. In Leysy's half educated opinion anyway.

Not really. The stars aligned for Carlton to do that deal. The consensus seems to be carlton made out like bandits, but there were legit reasons why WC did it.

If I'm North, I'm saying 6 and we can negotiate the rest. We'd all like to swap 2 for 11 and 18, but it won't happen.
Stars may align for us. Roos desperate for another first rounder.

Strawman argument.

In the real world the market always determines price.
Not really.

Yes mostly, but there are a lot of variables, and its a small market.

And you are simply not completely correct, in most cases yes, but in a lot of cases no or not quite.

To continue Sins analogy, if a lot of houses get sold in Brighton, one outlier doesn't matter. If only a few get sold, it does. To continue it further, and I've seen this happen, if a Brightonian dies and leaves their house to their kids, they may not care what it sells for, they may all already be wealthy, and there may be 10 of them, which means its split more ways etc etc. They may not have any kids, (I've seen this happen too), so their next of kin is an old workmate who gets a kickback to not list it and sell cheap to a dodgy developer. I could go on all day, point is, usually the market determines price, and definately the ballpark, but often it doesn't.

Its far too simplistic to say Carlton paid this so we should pay that.
