2024 Draft Thread

On the value of pick #3, let’s offer 11+18. They’ll take that. Won’t they?

I don't know his sources, Sin. Accuracy is all we can measure. We'll see.
I’m certainly not arguing with you Jack and of course we don’t know as you said.
However he uses terms like “put a lot of work into” and “ significant interest” which to me is all about meetings, interviews, attending games over the season etc.
That’s fair enough and is a great guide of who we like but we seem to like a lot of players which says to me that he is struggling with working out who the club with 8 of the first 24 picks will take and that makes the whole draft very difficult to predict.

I just watched Gettable and it is interesting how differently people hear the words but to me he is saying North will take Tauru at 2.

What I heard was

1. Richmond will take Lalor or FOS, not set in stone. Smith very outside chance
2. north will take Tauru at 2 and will use their F1 to get another pick
3. Carlton will consider Lalor/FOS/Smith/Draper/Langford at 3.
4. FOS, Langford and Lalor probably don’t get past top 5 but when you work it out one of them could.
5. Tigers have earliest interest in Smillie but also could get to St Kilda or our pick 10.
6. We aren’t trading for pick 2, only talks are between Adelaide and North
7. We really like Bo Allen
8. We aren’t overly interested in Draper

So my read would be

Lalor/FOS
Tauru
FOS/Lalor
Draper or Langford
Draper, Langford or Smith
Smillie,Langford or Smith

To me in this scenario we want Adelaide to take Draper because if they do one of Langford and Smith will drop to us at 6, probably Jagga, and I would strongly suspect we would take him and hope Smillie drops to 10. If he doesn’t we will take Bo Allen
Always had the squeezy gutfeel that the Saints would steal who we are after with their “ charity” pick , then said player would become a star .

Definitely sounded like we rate Allen very highly and that we’d love to some how land Smillie and Allen either way around .

Lalor or Fos at 1 , Smith at 6 ,Smillie at 10 and Allen at 11 would be pretty handy start Sin

Great intel, I knew Francis Jackson wouldn't be captivated by Draper, I'm relieved & elated.

Just as a caveat Bullie, it’s Twomey’s view!

I know Adelaide are interested in others but for them to not take Draper would be brave. As a home town boy the risk that if he goes somewhere else because the crows don’t pick him and became a star is a major risk for an Adelaide list manager to take.

Yes ts. 2 is prime real estate. So is 3, and the blues gave up 12 & 14. Market value clearly set.
Not really. The stars aligned for Carlton to do that deal. The consensus seems to be carlton made out like bandits, but there were legit reasons why WC did it.

If I'm North, I'm saying 6 and we can negotiate the rest. We'd all like to swap 2 for 11 and 18, but it won't happen.

Our first 4 picks should all used. Use them all and we get four hits at the best dozen or so players available. If the draft is as even as has been suggested, picks 10 and 11 will see us taking at least one player who was expected to go earlier at these picks. I can hear it now, we weren’t expecting so and so to be available so we pulled the trigger.

Picks 23 and 24 can then be split into later picks and futures on the night.

Surely the intention over the next two drafts is to build a new midfield and to replace Tom Lynch. Eight first and second round picks this year and another four next year will go a long way to achieving those goals.

There is no chance I would loose 10,11 for 2 as 10,11,can become as good or better.
10 & 11 in an even draft is too much but if we do go for 2, I think it could include F1. It will be tough trying to determine what those picks are worth. A lot of people wanting North F1 but I wouldn’t rate it as anymore valuable than Essendon F1 which I would trade 18 for.

For me personally, the 3 players I see has 100% certainties to get to 100 games + and become at least very good afl.players are Lalor, fos, Draper, just too many afl weapons to not be good.
My safe as houses triple would be Smith, Langford & Tauru. Lalor still hasn't demonstrated elite running ability and crash & bash footballers tend to have stop, start careers. O'Sullivan is also high risk, he's an impact player who doesn't touch the footy to the same extent as Smith & Langford. He's effectively missed a year of footy so he's already behind the game. Draper is a poor kick of the football, for all the pace he exudes he has a tendency to kick mongrel punt floaters. This is a deal breaker for me, we need classy finishers.

Tauru reads like Naughton, it's an ideal scenario because he's not your typical boom/bust forward, his floor is as safe as houses. I would pay a premium in this instance because his skill set matches that of a forward, his set shot kicking not bad at all, perhaps not a dead eye like Armstrong but aerially he is far superior. With so much reluctance to recruit talls due to fear of failure, this is a golden opportunity to buy a key forward ticket and not have to stress about missing out on a core player. At the absolute worst, we play him in Balta's old position and leave Noah up forward. This is the perfect play if you want to minimise risk. The opportunity cost of not taking him is missing out on yet another excellent key position player.

Armstrong is boom/bust, if he struggles as a forward he probably won't make it in the AFL. That's a bigger risk than having Tauru play as an intercept defender.

Agree.

And good to see you've took old Leysy's advice, saw the light and dropped off your love of Armstrong and jumped over to The Viking.

Night one invitees (source: Twomey):

Ashcroft
FOS
Langford
Lalor
Smillie
Jagga
Draper
Reid
Tauru
Armstrong
Travaglia
Allan
Kako
Lombard
Lindsay
Berry
Whitlock X 2
Shanahan
Marshall

Does the AFL always send 20 kids along to draft night????
That's not enough kids to cover for all of the first round draft picks, so I'm thinking they're massively hedging their bets because even this close to the draft no-one is real certain who's getting picked up where. Later few picks on night one n some kids won't be there to receive a jumper.

Agree.

But just to be clear, I never rated Armstrong ahead of Tauru, I just needed more time to assess Tauru's forward credentials.

The point I’m making is we are not sharing the 600 points as we’ve already paid too much for pick 20.
In your opinion of course. It was mentioned last year that Tigers purposely accumulated lower draft picks last year knowing they would trade them for higher picks this year. So Tigers saw value in trading the lower picks for #20 (I agree in this draft) particularly after we received all the extra picks in player trades. Again why then throw away points that have value into the neverland that benefits neither team?

Anyway, we'll know soon. If Tigers do bid at #1, I'll be wrong but I still wouldn't understand why you'd throw the points away.
