2024 Draft Thread

Hope not we have Taranto and Hopper both of them are slow enough. Even McAuliffe Ross prestia Dow and Sonsie are not overly quick
Langford imo if he has a knock is his pace.
Agree with your overall point....but don't lump McAuliffe in there - he is quick and tested through the roof at the combine.

North Adelaide utility Kane McAuliffe has shown his impressive athleticism in front of recruiting staff at the 2023 AFL Draft Combine.

Despite battling injuries at times throughout the year, McAuliffe placed in the top ten in three of the physical tests at Melbourne’s Margaret Court Arena, highlighting his well-rounded athletic base.

McAuliffe’s power and speed shone through in the 20m sprint, where he was the fastest South Australian and fifth quickest overall with a time of 2.930 seconds.

Earlier in the combine he was the first Croweater across the line in the 2km time trial, finishing in six minutes and 26 seconds.

The Rooster also featured among the top players in the country in both the running and standing vertical jumps tests, with heights of 95cm and 77cm respectively.

All the medical side would be ticked mate clubs do due diligence. His got the biggest upside out of Smith and FOS. Jackson doesn't always goes for that blue chip player Dusty was always our man while dees went conservative with Trengrove and Scully.
Jackson would have picked Scully too, the big call was Martin versus Morabito.

My biggest criticism of Clarke stems from his reluctance to recruit genuine spine players, CCJ over Sam Taylor was always going to be a long shot and there have been other missed opportunities although some of those players are still in development. He risked the biscuit on RCD with full knowledge the kid had an 11 beep. Whether or not the blame lies with the coaching staff is up for debate but this is another prime example of high risk versus ready-made conservatism with a top end pick.
💯 agree with that to reluctant to pick a tall and we we're crying out for them. I know Frank wasn't backed himself even if there was a few busts as expected

Not sure about that he has come out and said 💯 as soon as he went to see Dusty play he was our man.
It's easy to say that in hindsight and when the decision is taken out of your hands but the Scully Cup was was delivered to Melbourne after that shot on the siren.

I like Jagger , but it's high risk versus reward with Lalor. There is chance Smith is available at 6 not out of the question. If we can get Lalor, Smith or Langford at 6 and Murphy Reid that's a great haul.

I get you mate no doubt , but that year Martin was the player with huge X factor didn't see it from the other 2.

What does ticking off someone's hamstring, knee or whatever even mean ? Nobody is going to guarantee you that they won't do it again. Don't know why there's such a deep reliance on this "magical" sign off.

What they will tell you however, is: a) what the structure or form of it looks like and; b) that you are a higher risk of doing it again compared to someone who hasn't had that injury before. And that's about it. Source: head doctor at AFL club.

Having a few busts with talls is par for the course, even Hawthorn's dynasty contained some howlers in Thorp & Dowler. I think you have to take the plunge eventually, choosing the safe route might look good on paper but it won't necessarily deliver a premiership winning side. I also think free agency has led to complacency with talls, the notion you can just waltz into the store and pick one up on demand is at odds with reality.

I'm not sure the point you are trying to make? Are you suggesting Jackson had nothing to do with this pick?
He called out his name ,but Luke Williams did the ground work.
Has there been any public news on how the Hammy is travelling bt ?

No doubt the club will have all the reports
No mate ,but he should be close to resuming some sort of training ,unless the Tiges have said take it easy until we call your name out

Bully at 1, 6 and 10 I think we need a couple of midfielders with pace and can break a line what's your opinion

Yeah the Tiger's started going more to there games and training when they changed the zones ,and gave the rebels some more of the South-West,and took it away from the Falcons .
Dan Rioli was quite good in his nab cup year, good user and DAMAGING .

I remember someone posting that Toce was ill not long after he was appointed recruiting manager.

Not sure how much input he may have had after that.
I believe Toce was still colour coding up till the end so believe his order will be given strong consideration

I reckon we'd be better leveraging a bit of risk, by that I mean not taking both Lalor & FOS, I think pick 6 needs to be a counterweight to the players who are being picked for upside. In saying that, I still believe Smith has plenty of upside, I would personally pick him at 1 but I have Smith, O'Sullivan, Langford & Lalor all in the top bracket. I won't be upset with Lalor to make things clear, I just wouldn't pick him with so many unknowns. I do think his skill set is worthy of the top selection and if he proves to be durable then Richmond will look shiny in the wash-up.

At pick 6 I'm happy to see who falls through, if Draper goes to Carlton we will be landing a top talent, Tauru would also be a huge addition, grabbing a tall here would also balance the squad out a bit more. If Tauru becomes a forward and we miss him then it might be one of those situations we wind up regretting. Remembering of course that landing a key forward is the hardest thing in recruiting, getting that pillar sorted will make subsequent drafts so much easier to navigate and we can then look at players like Sharp in the 2025 draft.

Pick 10 is trade bait as far as I'm concerned, I'd rather move up and grab someone like Langford than settle on a medium forward like Berry or an ACL candidate like Hotton. I do like Travaglia & Lindsay but the latter will probably be off the board. Nailing this draft from my perspective would be one of FOS or Lalor, one of Smith & Langford & the mighty Tauru for our third premium selection.

With the remaining picks I would target a ruck forward, Jack Whitlock stands out as the best option given his ruck ability & sound set shot technique. If he goes early I would switch the focus to Sims or Matt Whitlock, both these players need some help with the goal kicking but I'm confident both can improve. Sims has really good field kicking so I'm taking his state form with a grain of salt. Forwards can be like cricketers, sometimes you just have bad days & bad luck. I think overall Sims can bring some consistency to his game once he's in a professional environment. Matt Whitlock reads like a clone of Ben King and we've already witnessed a successul transition to the forward line. He's actually developed into a far more reliable set shot than his brother.

If we need to top up on mids then Cooper Hynes would also be a good second round pick, I think selecting him would be contingent on how we approach our top 3 picks but in the event we take Tauru then I'd be happy buffering our midfield stocks with another hard nut midfielder.

I’d imagine the work/ research he put into this draft group over the past 4 years will have a huge bearing on who we select next Wednesday .
