2024 Draft Thread

It has been reported that Richmond is unwilling to trade pick 6. If true it makes it difficult for Richmond to obtain pick 2. No matter how many 10 for 13 + 29, then this for that shenanigans and permutations you try, we can be outbid by St Kilda with 7 + whatever it takes if we refuse to give up 6. Because 7 gets Tauru.

Unless we're prepared to take him at 6. Are we? Or are we prepared to give it to Norfs and hope Smillie gets to 10? Do we really have such a powerful hard-on for Smillie, or are we putting it out there that we do so it will seem like a huge concession when we give it up and therefore the secondary pick we give with it is only pick 20 because bloody hell Norfs we've already given up our beloved Smillie play fair you master negotiators?

6 and 20, Norfs, or we take Tauru ourselves?

Do they even want Tauru that badly? Or do they want two top KPP prospects and it would be nice if one of them were Tauru but if two of them were Armstrong and Trainor well that would be alright, even more so if we give them 29 from our 10 for 13 business and they can grab a Mraz or Gerreyn or Sims or whoever as well?

Can Smillie get to 10 if we give up 6?

1. Lalor
2. FOS
3. Draper?
4. Langford?
5. Lindsay?
6. Tauru
7. Does Smillie go here? Or does SOS pick Smith?
8. Reid? Travaglia? Hotton?
9. Armstrong? Smillie? Allan? Smith?
10. Smillie? But *smile* we've traded it for 13 and 29! That's ok, Poorts pick Travaglia, that's why they traded for it!
11. Smillie? Allan? Armstrong? Hotton? Smith?

What if we don't give up 6? Does Tauru go to St Kilda or Melbourne? Does anyone know???
There is another scenario which is we don't trade with North but trade with St Kilda to get pick 7 and we take Tauru at 7

All these scenarios are viable for us but of course as you point out we don't know what other clubs want. For instance St Kilda have 7 & 8 and to me if they want to split I would be splitting 8 not 7. Who do they want at 7, Lindsay? There are stories around now that Melbourne will take two mids at 5-9 which means Armstrong may be available at 10/11 ...do we want him?

For years we complained that our club leaked like a sieve but these days we are locked up like a drum. It's obviously better for the club but makes our job of conjecture and innuendo very hard. :)

On Travaglia there is a provocative suggestion that he can play afl onball one day.
But he doesnt do it today.
How many juniors have followed this path?
Hayden Young and ?
He's more like a Johannison imo

I spoke with the father of a draft prospect ranked in the thirty range. He had a few interesting things to say. One was that clubs have told him that their draft boards are quite different to the consensus phantom drafts outside of the first few.

He said Richmond have spoken to his son once and will talk to him again after the exam embargo lifts. He said we were a bit behind other clubs in terms of interviews due to the Toce tragedy. He did say Richmond were one of the tougher interviews and it was heavily psych based. He was a bit concerned that his son isn't as loud as some draftees and wasn't sure how that would come across. Also he thought that footy isn't an oral game in the end and wondered if the interviews carried a bit much weight.
You don't have to be loud to do well in a psych based test. These things are also about resilience, persistence, empathy amongst other things ...lot's of different aspects of a psychological profile.

Good insight & thanks for sharing.
There's no doubt the clubs place a heavy emphasis on how players interview.
Several years back now I'd been at a pre-draft night at the club where a Richmond official went some way to explaining just how much background work is done. I then realised how integral it was to the process. It's definitely not just about watching them play footy.
It's a key reason I stopped putting a lot of weight in Phantom drafts.
We all see the front office to a certain degree. Some more than others obviously who put in the time.
However the amateur analyst generally doesn't know the backgrounds or character traits of these junior athletes.
It's a very comprehensive method.

Should we put a for sale sign up on pick 1 to gain an extra top 10 pick instead of giving one up?
Hello too Melb & Stk btw,
6/7/8/10/11
or
5/6/9/10/11
3 players can go top pick
First 6 is a race of 10
So even its not funny.
Very thought provoking.
When baking a cake, you start off with making the sponge as the base and add the strawberries and cream last.
Unfortunately with Tasmania coming in, we probably have to whip the cream and pick the strawberries first.

I cannot understand, in such a "deep draft", why folks want to reduce our first rounders back to 5 picks. Of those 5, some will likely fail. So of our 15 or so holes in the list, we may fill 3 or 4?
Yes Mr Lee. We have 8 in 24. Unheard of for non expansion clubs. We are all being seduced by the 6 or so highly rated mids. Myself included.

But 8 in 24! Wow! Still blows me away…!

I take the judgements that this is a very good draft and very even on face value, I have way too little knowledge to know whether that is right or wrong. There are enough people saying it to make it probably true.

However the caution to me is that there are players in the draft that were not seen as high picks this time last year and we need to make sure we treat 2025 the same way. I am sure there will be players who blossom during the 2025 draft year.

That’s why I am not against strengthening next year as long as we get into F1s.

Insightful as ever Tottie. What hasn’t made any sense is Lalor’s stocks ROSE after a serious hamstring injury. Usually it would be the complete opposite.
Lalor averaged 22-23 dis playing as mid forward has good pace, agility, marking, kicking ,so he gets plenty of ball all with sub par preparation and will boom once he gets afl quality care and training, also hasn't played footy without cricket to worry about.
Like fos,so talented but he's also a animal with tackling, intent.

From looking at several sites daily, the player whom wasn't top 5 but was absolutely been dreamt about as a must by so many everywhere was Lalor, so he was always going top 3 by now.

I agree with the first bit Sin, I think the deviation id have is we'd have had people watching the u16 groups, so we'd know whether next year is deep or not.
One thing we may find, is next year the first X are exceptional, but after that it's thin. Whereas the vibe this year is there's some very good players this year, then good afterwards.
Trust Blair etc would have that figured out to a certain extent by now.

In this draft if you wants mid there’s enough to take that already have.

Take Travaglia as a back flanker if you want him.
