2024 Draft Thread

Not sure about your goals stats:

Jagga 8 goals from 16 games this year
Lalor 5 from 7
FOS 5 from 6

The issue with comparing is Lalor and FOS have been injured alot of their campaign. The club will be more in tune & have more info than us to evaluate. But been alot of smoke around regarding Lalor as preferred option for clubs at the top of draft selection table.
Stats from Rookie Me Central for all Coates League games over 2 years. Ave goals per game. Look it up. Best to compare dntire coates career isn't it?

And Lalor and FOS spent more time forward than Jagga.

But who are these genuine rucks who could pull off both roles? Dodson isn't that player, Coleman-Jones isn't that player, Naismith isn't that player. I think the parameters we're setting are confusing, we don't like pure rucks in any case, we haven't gone near one since Nankervis & i would have thought the CCJ experiment might have highlighted the folly of this line of thinking. If there's a Greg Stafford out there I am all ears but there isn't so scouring the field for the next Larkey looks like a worthwhile exercise.

So in ten years he built a triple premiership team with minimal help from Clarke, if that's only average I have no idea who or what is considered good these days. Wells has a far worse record in the first round, that trend still evident with his recent call of Clark over Phillipou.
Why do Jackson, Clarke, Wells etc, get all the pats on back or the kicks up the butt. Surely it is the talent spotters who are just as vital as the person reading the name out. Wasn’t Clarke promoted due to his ability to identify talent ? Look at the confusion on here regarding who really wanted JON. Unfortunately we have no idea how these recruiting teams really work and who should really be getting the credit or the blame. Of course sometimes it is purely luck, if the Dees had taken Dusty ahead of us history may look very different !!

There's a bit of truth to the issue of misdirected blame, the lines get blurred due to the time lag in players development, Clarke walked into the job with a host of players on the verge of breakout seasons. Rotten timing for Jackson because he had just pulled off the best draft of his career & I'm talking about the rookie draft he nailed. You might get lucky when a Dustin Martin falls into your lap but luck isn't a factor when it comes to nailing four premiership centurians from a rookie draft. Jackson got better as the years went on, he eventually learnt how to get the junk picks working in his favour, that above anything else is why I consider him to be one of the best in the business.

You missed Astbury and Grimes.

He also picked Edwards, whilst not first round he was a top 30 pick.
Didn't miss these guys - this was only first round picks. Out of interest, FJ hit on 36% of his second pick of the draft - irrespective of round.

I would add Brandon Ellis to that list too, very important in 2 premierships, and played more games than all but 3 players picked after him (Brad Hill, Luke Breust and Lachie Neale) and no-one picked before him has played as many games as he did, though there are 3 that are still playing and could go past him (Coniglio, Hoskin Elliott and Greene)
Brandon was in the list

As I previously said, I'm not potting FJ - I'm a massive fan. Including Rioli FJ hit on 55% of first round picks. If you take out JON on a technicality (an FJ pick but Greg MIller in charge) that goes to 60%.

Drafting first rounders is a flip off the coin and it gets harder after that - I'm wrapt we have 8 early picks. Hopefully the depth of this 'super draft' translates to a higher percentage.

Can he get off the ground ?
Faull is dangerous around goal because he doesn’t just take marks, he is also very clean below his knees and can snap goals from general play in a way few key forwards can. Sidelined until June with a stress reaction in his back, Faull made a rousing return for the Rebels with five goals, including a freakish checkside from the boundary. The key forward slotted 16 goals in his first five games for the Rebels this season and booted five majors across his three games at the national championships. That included an impressive three-goal haul against the Allies, where he clunked five marks - two of those contested. He also kicked a goal and assisted two others against Vic Metro. However, not having a pre-season impacted the Redan native as the season went on, leading to some inconsistent form, but he produced two of his best games during the Rebels’ finals run. Faull kicked four goals and had 16 touches and 123 SuperCoach points in their win over the Geelong Falcons and then almost single-handedly won the Rebels’ preliminary final against the Oakleigh Chargers with 5.2, 18 disposals, seven marks - there contested - and 195 SuperCoach points. He showed his impressive leap by recording the equal-fifth best vertical leap at the national combine.

A draft riser this year, Dattoli is a clever half-forward who can also push into the midfield and have an impact. He had an injury-interrupted bottom-age year in 2023, but was kicking goals at all levels – and in all areas – this season. Dattoli has had some monster games at school level with Carey Grammar, after starting the Coates Talent League season in fine fashion with the Knights. During the under-18 national championships with Vic Metro he played as a half-forward, before being used as a genuine wingman in the final game against Vic Country. Dattolli gathered 20 disposals and eight marks in that game, showing an ability to read the play, run good patterns and get back to support his defence. He also took one of the marks of the tournament in Vic Metro’s second game against Western Australia, showing off his strong overhead marking as he soared over the top of an opponent at half-forward. Dattoli is a creative ball user who generally makes good decisions with the footy in hand and can change the momentum of games. In a Wildcard weekend match against the Eastern Ranges in late August, Dattoli was best afield with 35 disposals, seven clearances, nine score involvements and a goal.

10 & 11 for pick 2, then try and get the Saints to swap pick 7 for pick 10, I don't think that would require a massive amount, not when clubs are desperate to get their hands on pick 23. I'd say it is a sellers market.
Right, so what do North offer to make it worthwhile for the Saints?

That's what I used. For this year. Previous year:

Jagga 9 goals from 12 games
Lalor 7 from 11
FOS 3 from 10

Lalor still ahead overall but for youngsters I'm more interested in this year as they improve in strength. From games I've seen I think you can safely say Lalor is more dangerous around goals. Kicking penetration is definitely one of Jagga's weaknesses. As is defensive pressure. Probably why he's not a lock-in for #1. Is the best ball gatherer and very nimble in traffic. Kick to handballs over his last two seasons 419 to 460. The reason, perception or otherwise, some think he is not damaging with his ball use. Definitely areas to improve on as they all do.

Whichever way we go, don't think we can go too wrong with our first pick but think we're after the best big-bodied mid as #1.

Of course he can. He roams between the arcs and can stand under the ball. Doesn’t shy away from the contest.

Faull has claims on being the hardest working and most competitive key forward in the crop. The mobile tall not only fulfils his duty of splitting and winning aerial duels, but also follows up keenly at ground level. The vigour and intensity with which he attacks balls in dispute is terrific, proving his impact goes further than just marking and kicking goals.

Wow ! The Cannon Ball Faull !

The only reason this year is fairly even ,is because Lalor and Fos had a injury riddled year, otherwise they are clear 1-2 picks ,which l think they are anyway.

Im not selling Smith short,it's a fact what l have wrote ,he isn't damaging,he isn't versatile, his kicking over distance is iffy ,his marking is ok,most of his possessions are short ,he runs into the forward line with space, and instead of trying to finish off at goals ,he passes off to players who are manned ,,doesn't take the game on ,defensive pressure isn't that strong ,which leads me to think he will be unaccountable at AFL LEVEL.
Looked at home against players twice his size when playing for our vfl side.

Just on Francis Jackson from all accounts Chris Toce did most of the work on the draft before he passed away, Francis is coming in to help at the tail end of the process.

That's why Schache never had an AFL career. A big guy with no mongrel or desire for contact ain't much good in the AFL. You cannot prefer to avoid contact if you are 195 plus. Darcy is slight but he does not shy away from going at the contested ball in the air.

You can get away with it at the lower levels but it's not something that is super teachable/learnable. Otherwise the likes of Schache/Vickery etc would have had long AFL careers.
Thats why Miller has struggled to establish himself.
Hates body contact.

For a guy that likes to pass off goals he kicks more goals on ave than both FOS & Lalor. And has more clearances, more i50's, more disposals, more SI's etc

Turns up more often, plays every game, has great leadership credentials, trains hard....but other than that he's pretty iffy.
But when your up against a bloke who walks on water what hope does Jagga have?.lol

Not sure that what is insinuated in that statement is true.

It is true that he struggles one on one at times which is more about technique imo, but there is zero evidence that in general play he lacks a desire to go for the hard ball, tackle etc.

Miller gets out marked one on one too much but he is not a player who lacks bravery

There was a draft night prior to the draft, where they introduced Frank as part time. He had SA and WA. Greg had NSW, QLD and Vic.

The Lawn mower stuff was also overblown. Frank went to meet him and his mum early on a Sunday morning and he was out mowing the grass - which he took as a sign of a well balanced and hard working kid.

On top of his dyslexia, we were also crap at developing kids back then. Tambling or JON might have ended up different if we took them today. All water under the bridge - Frank’s redeemed that pick many times over.
How suited would Tambling be to our game plan from 17 onwards.
