2024 Draft Thread

It might be a negotiating tactic to get them to up the ante.

"Pick 2 for 6 and 11, Blair?"
"Go *smile* yourself."
"What if we throw in our F1?"
"Nup."
"But we really want pick 6!"
"So do we. Anyway, you don't want pick 6, you want Tauru or Armstrong."
"Tauru and Armstrong."
"Good luck with that."
"Well, what can you offer us?"
"We're pretty happy with what we have."
"Awww, Blaaaiiirr! C'moooon, Blaaaaaiiir!"
'You're not getting pick 6."
"What about 10 and 11 then?"
"What about 11 and 23."
"C'mon, Blair! Ya killin' me!"
"Feel free to go find a better deal."
"But you have all the picks!"
"I know."
Larry David right here folks !

Sounds like Norfs future 1st hasn’t been on the table like the media have reported
Well it's HS who reported it initially. But it said this
'North Melbourne is reportedly open to offering Richmond its prized Pick 2 - and a future first-round selection - for picks 6 and 11 in next month's National Draft, according to the Herald Sun.'

It's not really categoric that North did offer it. More click bait really.

Why Richmond might not trade for North Melbourne’s pick two

The Tigers boast an extraordinary seven first-round selections, as well as the coveted opening pick of the second round on day two, but are set to re-sign Thomson Dow, a source familiar with negotiations told this masthead, meaning they will have only seven list spots available.

Richmond’s almost unprecedented draft hand – picks one, six, 10, 11, 18, 20, 23 and 24 – owes largely to them agreeing to trade Daniel Rioli (Gold Coast), Shai Bolton (Fremantle) and Liam Baker (West Coast).

However, the Tigers’ second-round selection could fetch them a future first-rounder, and reduce their number of picks to seven, in line with how many players they’ll need to fill their list, should they retain Dow.
Maybe I need to take my socks off to help me count properly, but I counted a couple of times and even with Dow kept on the list I come up with 34 main list players and then 2 cat B rookies that don't get counted on the main list.
34 players and a list maximum of 42 means we've got 8 spots available for our 8 picks.
Am I missing something, counting it wrong somehow, or is Mark McGowan just another meedjia *smile* wit with *smile* for brains.

Great discussion. Finally caught up the last few days

That deal from north needs to be super sweet for us. I suspect they are after Taru and Trainior and could get that with 6 and 11. If taru is gone they could get smith / trainor. Much better that just taru at 2. I think their next pick is 60ish

For us though we are in the drivers seat. If north keep pick 2 then it is likely taru is in the first 6 and that 6th best midfielder slides to us. It is in our interest to keep north at 2.

I also think north are improvers next year. Maybe somewhere 12-8

I would expect 6 and 11 and our f3 for north’s 2, f1 and f2.

I'm happy pick 6 is off the table but what about 10 & 11 for pick 2, straight up deal, no other picks involved. I would be doing that deal personally, maybe not to North's liking as Tauru might be gone but I'm wondering if a third club could help out in getting them up to pick 7.

Extract from HS Article:

Richmond secured Brisbane’s No. 20 draft pick for picks 32, 42, 43 and 45 in a deal that handed the Tigers an eighth pick within 24 selections.

But Brisbane’s list boss Dom Ambrosio said on the last day of the draft the two clubs had not discussed whether the Tigers would bid on Ashcroft with pick one.

Richmond’s Blair Hartley said the Tigers philosophy was to simply bid on father-son and academy players where they sat in the club’s draft order.
Essendon traded its No. 9 draft selection to Melbourne for an extra future first-rounder and would be thrilled if clubs like the Demons did not bid on academy small forward Isaak Kako in the top 10.

While the Dons would still secure Kako they would have to pay a higher price in points, pushing back later selections.

Richmond holds picks one, North Melbourne pick two and Carlton pick three in the national draft.

The Tigers are open to doing more deals but are not interested in trading picks six and 11 for the Roos’ pick two because it is such an even draft.

If they keep their picks they could secure powerful Victorian midfielder Sam Lalor with pick one in the draft then a midfield slider like 195cm point-of-difference onballer Josh Smillie at pick six.

So unless the Roos give up their future first-rounder as part of a trade deal with this year’s pick two the Tigers are unlikely to trade up to pick two.

Clubs are in the dark about Richmond’s intentions with pick one but many believe Greater Western Victoria mid Lalor is the best player as a mid-forward who has at times shown explosive Dustin Martin-like traits.

The Tigers have long loved Smillie’s gifts but a quieter Under-18 carnival has seen him slide from No. 1 overall pick considerations.

The Lions used that No. 20 draft pick worth 912 draft points to secure Richmond’s back-end picks worth 1704 draft points to strengthen their draft hand to secure Ashcroft.

But even after securing a 20 per cent discount in their bid for Ashcroft, it would make a huge difference to the Lions if Ashcroft went at pick one (3000 points) compared to four or five in the national draft.

One thing that is clear is that we have moved past the time when we couldn’t keep our secrets secret, and when we discuss deals with other clubs where we offer not to draft a certain player as part of a trade deal. 👍

Just had a flashback to when he fell on a garden stake back in 2002. One of the strangest injuries ever.
Aah the Big O.
Big fella nearly discumknackerated himself. Got a vague memory that his sister found him n had to call the ambo's. Fairly embarrasment to have that on the CV, sister found him in the garden with a big stake poking out of his groin.

I've done the same. The McGowan math ain't working for me either.

I've got 27 with Dow, 28 with a rookie upgraded to the main list, giving us 8 spots and Max no of rookies.
So that'd then be 28 + 6 rookies = 34 (+ 2 cat B = 36). Either way, 42 without the Cat B or 44 with. Am I missing something?

Lots of options being floated on this thread Bully. A while back you mentioned a strategy whereby we ended up with picks 1, 2, another in the first 6 and 1 or 2 later picks.
I really liked this strategy because whilst it’s a deep draft I still believe that 3 picks inside the top 6 is our best chance to turbo charge our rebuild. 3 of the best 6 midfielders in the draft plus the best midfielder in next year’s draft and we should have built a great platform for our next premiership tilt.
Just wondering, of all the different scenario's raised which is your preferred one.

No. I'm keeping one of 10 or 11.
At best the can have 11 and 18.

Screw their dynasty. I want another one.

Our future 3rd already gone to Freo.

Can he get off the ground ?
Of course he can. He roams between the arcs and can stand under the ball. Doesn’t shy away from the contest.

Faull has claims on being the hardest working and most competitive key forward in the crop. The mobile tall not only fulfils his duty of splitting and winning aerial duels, but also follows up keenly at ground level. The vigour and intensity with which he attacks balls in dispute is terrific, proving his impact goes further than just marking and kicking goals.

Finally got to watch many of the juniors on video, my observations so far.

1. This is a tight draft, the top 20 ish look very good, I’ve rarely seen so many good kicks of the footy run so deep. Stop obsessing over the top 3, go deep and play a numbers game.

2. Despite the conjecture on PRE I don’t see a chasm in skill in the top 10. I would keep all our picks and take 4 picks in the top 12 who will likely be very good footballers.

3. Lalor looks special, Smith looks a sure thing, FOS looks good on paper and may be elite, but I don’t see where people see such a gap between these kids and many other talents in the draft.

4. Armstrong, Tauru, either Whitlock, Simms, all talls who actually take one grab marks. Way better than Koschitzke or Ryan, get onboard.

5. Nobody has played footy for 2 months, if anybody has risen or fallen in your opinion you’ve spent too much time on the socials.

Cheers, enjoy.
