2024 Draft Thread

Interesting, scuttlebutt, Sin. I have only been able to link Adelaide to Smith to date. Langford and Draper, eh. Logical types. If Ogilvie doesn't take Smith it raises the big question as you point out. It's the elephant in the room.

Who's linking Armstrong to Taylor? Is there mail or scuttlebutt? I can't get anything. Lindsay and Reid are names floating around at 5, 7-9.
It is mainly scuttlebutt and there is so much of it that it is hard to discern who says what. However the Adelaide interest in Langford has been mentioned by a few as new because it has been long assumed they would go with the Adelaide boy in Draper.

Links of Melbourne to Armstrong have come from a few places but it is very hard to know what is real and what is assumption. ( Melbourne needs a key forward)

But I think that scenario could happen

North will take the Viking at 2 and a big chance Melbourne will take Armstrong at 5. Adelaide rumoured to be undecided on Draper or Langford. Carlton will take FOS.

Smith is a good chance to be around at 6 but will we take him if he is?

Be staggered if Melbourne take Arnstrong at 5. Just doesn't make sense on a few levels.

Hard to see how he isn't in a leadership group by 22. Sounds like he has already played a 100 games. Hard to remember a better spoken kid combined with a better resume. Again, not sure I've seen a safer 200 gamer.

Bloody hell you're getting as bad as Oldbets with all this double posting.

It makes sense if they think he will be picked by us at 6 or by st kilda at 7 or 8 and they believe they can still get a very good mid at 9.

FWIW Twomey said this morning that both Richmond and St kilda have an interest in Armstrong but you would suspect our interest is not at 6.

Lots of talk about Lalor having a few Dustyesque traits.

But I reckon if Jagga could be our next Cotchin, that's a bigger piece of the puzzle locked away. We need a new wave of leaders coming through. I'm a bit worried that our current crop of kids are a little bit too focussed on haircuts and texting each other about where to get the perfect almond latte. Sure, Cotch had great hair and loved a nice coffee too, but those aren't the aspects we should be looking to clone.

In this draft, we need to find at least one articulate, values driven, committed leader who will set standards from day one.

Real leadership paired with rock solid ability is rare. I'm hoping whoever we take with our earlier picks fits that template.

Sam Walsh specs, he seems the obvious choice for a club rebuilding, I think with this pick you lock in the most likely to play 200 games. From that point it becomes a question of who slides to pick 6, I'm thinking Langford who is another great acquisition because he won't be seduced by offers from rival clubs. Let's not forget that a struggling club also needs to protect its cattle, if you don't ward off predators then you morph into a feeder club. North know this all too well and it's likely to happen again with Luke Davies-Uniacke.

Splitting Lalor & O'Sullivan is trickier, but I think again you have to ask the question as to who is the surer bet to play 200 games. I think there's more clarity around O'Sullivan, his athletic specs look robust and I think his role will be more conducive to longevity. When I look at all types of crash and bash footballers from across the competition I see mainly stop start careers, De Goey misses plenty of football, LDU is often sidelined, Petracca has just had career threatening injuries, Dangerfield was frequently banged up and then there's rookies like Venables who had his career cut short by head injuries.

I think nailing this draft isn't only about grabbing the best players, durability brings its own rewards. Travis Boak isn't a glamorous footballer but he's been bedrock for nearly two decades, I doubt anyone at Port Adelaide would regret taking a meat and potatoes player over some of the fancier names that came after pick 6.

Hahaha! I was just looking for a link to explain to old folks like Oldford what a Hot Rodent Boyfriend is.

It's probably unlikely but you never know.
I secretly wanted to respond with an article that links FOS to a better homes and gardens article but don’t have the will right now. I must have missed the bit about hamsters.

Alternatively we take Lalor at 1 and we will still get one of those durable 200 gamers you describe at pick 6... at least one of Smith, FOS, Langford or Smillie will be there... best of both worlds.

Tell you what, you're like Hercule Poirot the last 4 weeks. Or something out of Cluedo. Mr Taylor with a pick 9 Armstrong in the kitchen. Or Mr Ogilvie with a Smith in the bathroom. Or could it be Mr Rawlings with a trade down in the study ?

Glad I'm not the only one who realises Dyer works for Interpol.
