2024 Draft Thread

Nah, Frank looked after WA. He had some influence with JON.
Spot on General Motors. This keeps coming up all the time ....and all the time the record needs setting straight.

Frank started working for us part time in 2005 whilst he was still teaching. Frank was introduced to everyone as a full time employee after the 2005 season at a post Draft function at John Mathies house. I was there.

At that function, Greg showed me a heap of footage of JON on his clunky (at the time), lap top and said and I quote "this is Francis' boy...have a look".

Frank was all over JON.

It's ok. Nobody gets em right all the time.

Even Bradman scored a duck. Wallace wanted an outside mid who could kick long and break the game open. A Dal Santo type, but quicker.
We didn't pick best available, but went for Combine results.
Wouldn't have happened under Clarke - he would've accidentally taped Rove over the JON footage and then we would've trade the pick for Shaun McManus.

But JON wasn't a top 5 pick in any case. We all know about the stuff ups but ultimately the buck stops with Miller & Wallace in this instance. Jackson's first pick in AFL footy was Jack Riewoldt, straight in with a slam dunk, from pick 13 no less.

There was a draft night prior to the draft, where they introduced Frank as part time. He had SA and WA. Greg had NSW, QLD and Vic.

The Lawn mower stuff was also overblown. Frank went to meet him and his mum early on a Sunday morning and he was out mowing the grass - which he took as a sign of a well balanced and hard working kid.

On top of his dyslexia, we were also crap at developing kids back then. Tambling or JON might have ended up different if we took them today. All water under the bridge - Frank’s redeemed that pick many times over.

Yeah Riewoldt was an outstanding pick. One of our all-time greats. However if my memory is correct, the pick went against a lot of opinions here on PRE. Anyway, my point is I love everyone’s opinions in the lead up to the draft but happy to trust our recruiting team, who have been monitoring these kids for years.

Im no expert - but these 6 names seem to appear at the top in nearly every ranking Ive seen
  • FOS
  • Lalor
  • Jagga
  • Langford
  • Draper
  • Smillie

But its not unanimous - sometimes these names in the top 6 as well...
  • Tauru
  • Armstrong
  • Murphy Reid
  • Travaglia
  • Hotton

I was all in on trading for pick 2, but looking at this list of 11 players.... I want 4 of them.

Chuck in Allan and Lindsay to the second group and imo you have a more complete picture of the value now under consideration at punt road.
Feel we will get 4, but it would be great if we could manufacture a way to get 5!

So last week Norfs offered 2 & F1 for 6 & 11 through the meeja. Looks like Blair has answered via Mark McGowan that yeah nah forget about 6, mate.

Excellent - let’s see what lolnorf come up with next.

I actually reckon the value of having #10 and #11 together is really powerful - you can work the options better on who you pick (hmmm, does that actually make sense…….)

Travaglia & Lindsay, pick 18 Whitlock, pick 20 Faull.
Do you think Lindsayu gets past St Failure Bully? They are red hot on him by all accounts.

Travaglia would definitely bring some much-needed run and gun to a slow football team.

Hopefully we take him at 10 if he's still there even if we give up 11 for #2 and nab Lalor and Fos.

Blues are red hot for Travaglia too and GoDeez might be into him also.

Bully what do you think the chances are that the Tigers would possiblly take Lalor FOS and Trevaglia with 1,2 and 10 if that scenario plays out and go taller later?

For a guy that likes to pass off goals he kicks more goals on ave than both FOS & Lalor. And has more clearances, more i50's, more disposals, more SI's etc

Turns up more often, plays every game, has great leadership credentials, trains hard....but other than that he's pretty iffy.
Not sure about your goals stats:

Jagga 8 goals from 16 games this year
Lalor 5 from 7
FOS 5 from 6

The issue with comparing is Lalor and FOS have been injured alot of their campaign. The club will be more in tune & have more info than us to evaluate. But been alot of smoke around regarding Lalor as preferred option for clubs at the top of draft selection table.

Riewoldt was the perfect 1st pick to begin a dynasty rebuild.

People thought he was too small, couldn't jump high enough, wasn't fast enough, wasn't athletic or tough enough, etc. He was only recruited because of his name. He's a sook like Nick. Why draft a flanker over the #1 pick at the beginning of the year, James Sellar? Sellar was bigger, stronger, faster, a longer kick and a better contested mark. A man's man.

FJ's first full-time pick was the club's first pick to win a flag. The draft wasn't around for the 1980 team, right? That means Jack will always be the first ever drafted Richmond premiership player.

If the top 6 are set that leaves guys like Reid & Smillie for that 7-10 range, I think there's pretty good depth so missing Lindsay won't be the worst scenario. I'm liking Faull over Armstrong because it does give us an extra pick with the midfielders, but from 18 onwards I think we can & need to secure 2-3 talls. I like Jack Whitlock but if he's off the board I don't mind grabbing a ruck like Dodson & a 199cm tall forward like Sims. I would be a tad bit disappointed if Dodson was our only tall, that to me would be kicking the can down the road for yet another year.

Mason Cox kicked 17 and had 325 HO is 2023. Only 19 games. Too injury prone but he has been better than most give him credit for.
Which was just 17 hitouts & 0.9 goals a game. I think maybe Grigg had more hitouts. Averaged 5 effective disposals a game, 5.5 in his career. 1.7 turnovers. 1.2 clearances, 3.6 marks, 1.3 tackles. I think he's about what people give him credit for. I believe it's also cost Pies over the last few years sticking with him and bandaiding their key forward issue rather than focusing on acquiring a true quality forward.

Extract from HS Article:

Richmond secured Brisbane’s No. 20 draft pick for picks 32, 42, 43 and 45 in a deal that handed the Tigers an eighth pick within 24 selections.

But Brisbane’s list boss Dom Ambrosio said on the last day of the draft the two clubs had not discussed whether the Tigers would bid on Ashcroft with pick one.

Richmond’s Blair Hartley said the Tigers philosophy was to simply bid on father-son and academy players where they sat in the club’s draft order.
Essendon traded its No. 9 draft selection to Melbourne for an extra future first-rounder and would be thrilled if clubs like the Demons did not bid on academy small forward Isaak Kako in the top 10.

While the Dons would still secure Kako they would have to pay a higher price in points, pushing back later selections.

Richmond holds picks one, North Melbourne pick two and Carlton pick three in the national draft.

The Tigers are open to doing more deals but are not interested in trading picks six and 11 for the Roos’ pick two because it is such an even draft.

If they keep their picks they could secure powerful Victorian midfielder Sam Lalor with pick one in the draft then a midfield slider like 195cm point-of-difference onballer Josh Smillie at pick six.

So unless the Roos give up their future first-rounder as part of a trade deal with this year’s pick two the Tigers are unlikely to trade up to pick two.

Clubs are in the dark about Richmond’s intentions with pick one but many believe Greater Western Victoria mid Lalor is the best player as a mid-forward who has at times shown explosive Dustin Martin-like traits.

The Tigers have long loved Smillie’s gifts but a quieter Under-18 carnival has seen him slide from No. 1 overall pick considerations.

The Lions used that No. 20 draft pick worth 912 draft points to secure Richmond’s back-end picks worth 1704 draft points to strengthen their draft hand to secure Ashcroft.

But even after securing a 20 per cent discount in their bid for Ashcroft, it would make a huge difference to the Lions if Ashcroft went at pick one (3000 points) compared to four or five in the national draft.

Sounds like Norfs future 1st hasn’t been on the table like the media have reported

Pick 6 and 20 will be where we start then we go to 6 and 18

Then 6 and 11 with their first pick next year coming back likely getting it done from a RFC viewpoint.

A future first from Norf will most likely be a top 5 pick and in essence better than 11

No Tauru for you ?
It might be a negotiating tactic to get them to up the ante.

"Pick 2 for 6 and 11, Blair?"
"Go *smile* yourself."
"What if we throw in our F1?"
"Nup."
"But we really want pick 6!"
"So do we. Anyway, you don't want pick 6, you want Tauru or Armstrong."
"Tauru and Armstrong."
"Good luck with that."
"Well, what can you offer us?"
"We're pretty happy with what we have."
"Awww, Blaaaiiirr! C'moooon, Blaaaaaiiir!"
'You're not getting pick 6."
"What about 10 and 11 then?"
"What about 11 and 23."
"C'mon, Blair! Ya killin' me!"
"Feel free to go find a better deal."
"But you have all the picks!"
"I know."
