2024 Draft Thread

Back to ground zero, this draft is the last chance saloon before Tasmania hit the scene. My fear is the lack of talls at the pointy end, I feel a reach is necessary but not at 1. Best CV belongs to Jagga Smith, no risks please, this isn't the year to get cute.
Welcome back mate

FOS / Lalor for me

who do you like out of the talls after #20

I would love to bid on marshall if we hold a pick around #14 and if matched Taj Hotton i think would have so much talent that was not able to be displayed this year and could be the bargain of the draft

Great interview with Jasper Alger this morning - or the *smile* Picker as I like to call him (boy just can't leave himself alone).

15 clubs interviewed. Richmond one of them. Big Richmond fan. Nominated FOS Vegas as the best player in the draft, followed by Jags and then Levi Strauss.

Spoke very very well. Interesting player. Not much of him but he's a pesky character that just keeps bobbing up on the forward line. Reminds me a tiny bit of Caracella.

His tank must be ok, he's already hit the 40 possession mark, he's also very organised so I'm not overly concerned about his ability to distribute. Unfortunately this draft doesn't have an absolute glamour pick without rolling the dice on upside. Taking O'Sullivan might turn out ok but I don't see midfield numbers that screams bluechip selection. This is one pick you can't afford to waste, even if that means missing out on the best player. I also think the game is swinging back to the shortish midfielders, Rowell, Butters, Serong, Daicos etc. I think this draft is very even but we'll be sizing up x-factor at pick 6 with any luck.
Yeh, I am so over hearing negatives based on height.

Adding to those you list above, Neale is 177cm. Merrett 1.80. Parish 1.81. Mitchell 1.81.

Ball winners do not change much. All got big numbers at junior level in the midfield. (Merrett was mid/forward but still got ave over 26 poss)

Parish was a very similar type to Jagga IMO - In his final TAC year he ave 28 possessions (16 Cont), 7 clearances and 5 i50's. Slim but agile, quick thinking. Reckon he is the template for Jagga.

ADDING From AFL website -

Parish completed testing at this month's NAB AFL Draft Combine without blowing anyone away with outstanding results, but that isn't too much of a concern. His pace (3.07 seconds over the 20-metre sprint) and endurance (level 13.8 beep test) is solid but Parish is more a footballer than an athlete. That's pretty clear when watching him play.

Very tall good to superstar mids are a rarity.
Ball magnetism is what you need.

They’re not a quick lot this year.
Dusty and Cotchin well under 3 seconds and they were never particularly known for their speed, although both had breakaway power.
Midfielders this year with no express pace is a worry
I didn't realise we were drafting for the next half-time GF sprint winner.

Writing off a draft year of mids because no one ran 3.0

Here are the Top Ten sprint lists since 2021, any gun mids there?

Neale ran a 3.0 sec 20m. Parish 3.08. Cripps was 3.2 plus IIRC?.

FWIW Usain Bolt was a 2.87sec runner for 20m (although his top speed was just under 45kmh!)

I think Balta has hit 38kmh?

How often does a mid actually run 20m sprinting?

Used to love a Nathan Foley burst from the middle and goal. But doesn't happen very often.

Repeat running is the real key to the mids.

Is it height that people have concerns on or his very slight frame ? At 1.81m I don’t think that is a negative for most.

The 20m times are indicators of acceleration. The clubs get breakdowns. First 5m, first 10m and 20m. So they can break down the little wheels guys like say Maurice Rioli and Nic Watson. These little wheels guys won't necessarily test well for 20m but should show up in the first 5m. They show up on the park for this.

We don't recruit players because they won the 20m trial or the leap or whatever. We get to measure individuals and the cohort. Against each other and previous cohorts.

It's a measure. If a bloke who can't play runs 2.69 it doesn't matter. When Leonardo Lombard reels of a 2.85 and a 7.7 agility we know not just that our eyes aren't deceiving us but that his burst and baulk will stand up in any company any period.

When a bloke turns in a 3.25 we know not just that he will be very vulnerable from behind on the burst but that they will get off him. There is noone he can catch. It's not fatal. But he will need cover. That said, Dustin Martin was fully blistering and he needed cover.

100m is a long way, MD. What do we reckon Darcy Wilson and Bonce McBlotchley are for 20m? 3.0? 2.97? They just quinellad the time-honoured sprint. (Which should be run over 20m IMO.)

I'm totally with you on short players, MD. FWIW I think it's an advantage. I've seen Chris Scott deploy Brad Close against Marcus Bontempelli to weave in front of him at stoppage. Coaches use very smalls against juggernauts. They're vulnerable.

On Nathan Foley he was top of the comp for pure clearance power when right. He was super quick outside but he could just pounce when inside. Explosive. I wonder what he tested for 5m. I reckon he might have come in real quick there. He was a big loss and we'd kill for another one, with longevity.

Not sure about any off field stuff - but Draper is the closest clone to Foley we've seen in a while Jack

Reckon he will probably be available at our likely pick 7 as well. Very interesting if we take him. On football ability and needs (he's probably the quickest mid in this class) he would have to come under serious consideration.

I'm all over Draper, Bryan. The best I50 kick in the draft IMO. Glamour I50. Brisk. Too inside IMO, but young. Can get outside. Can break. There are some queries on is late SANFL form. I'll do those tapes before I write him up. I did a lot of form on 2023. I'm about to finalise 2024. I don't think he has the clearance power of Nathan Foley or I'd have him standout #1 in this draft.

I've always hated the unfair northern academies due to its huge 1 way advantages.
I've noticed that Brisbane, Suns,Gws ,Sydney get extraordinary hits from top 25ish academy players, they nearly always turn out good afl players, but normal 1st round draftees are a 50/50 chance at best.
The difference is 7 years of having academies under your nose compared to getting bits n pieces of other people's information on draftees u don't know can be yours untill draft day.

It’s not about winning sprints but a great player with speed will always beat a great player who is not quick.
Do you appreciate how Rioli and Bolton use their speed to break away out of congestion? Well we’re losing both and it doesn’t appear we’re in a position to replace that.
I’d be adding in Draper to the mix as it’s something we now severely lack.
