2024 Draft Thread

I reckon 1 of Smith or Langford will be there.

1 - Lalor
2 - FOS
3 - Langford / Draper
4 - Langford / Smith / Draper
5 - Lindsay
6 - Tauru
7 - Langford / Smith / Draper

Its why if we do the North deal, we probably need to do the Saints deal too. Then we lock in 3 key mids, to add to probably Dyson Sharp next year. Theres our 4 key mids for the next 10 years.
5 when you add the Kane Train

Will North blink first? I think they do.

They have had a hard on for Tauru for sometime now. They know at pick 2 that’s too early in the draft. So they need to trade. But they would also be mindful he probably doesn’t get past Melbourne’s picks.

So their only option is trade with Adelaide or us.

If they get spooked and pull the trigger on a trade they will take unders. Clubs know this.

They are *smile*.

I agree.

North are stacked with midfielders and hybrids after previous drafts and this years trade period.

They desperately need talls to complement their list.

I reckon they will accept 6 and 23 for pick 2. They are mad if they don’t. Gives them Tauru and Trainor/Whitlock I would imagine.

As for us, if that occurs, I hope we go.

1. Lalor
2. FOS
10. Lindsay
11. Berry
18. Faull
20. Hynes
24. Dattoli

That’s my Xmas wish list anyway.

Who would trade back from 23 or 24 for an extra 1st rounder next year? Seems a decent option given the depth. Could still land a Jack Ough, Jaxon Artemis, Lachie Jacques type in the 40's...

Absolutely. I think there are a really good bunch in the 35-40 range.

yeah true, I was being overly harsh but if we're in the hunt for a forward then Jack is a bit more reliable in front of goals. I'd actually be open to grabbing both instead of Shanahan.
All further arguments in favour of taking the best kpp prospect at the first available opportunity.

Our draft revolves around the #6 pick.

If we get Smillie at #6 then we have had an average draft. Why? For me I can't get past the truth that at 195cm and operating in the middle on opponents a head shorter than him and with schoolie bodies that he has received a disproportionate amount of possessions that he just wont get at AFL level. I don't know how to allow for this in his proposed draft ranking. If anyone slips then we take them in preference for mine. That means Tauru or Draper - too much love I reckon for Langford or Jagger to slip to us.

Also re our kudos for the interstate boys. We have very little. We got proper lucky this year in terms of available picks and draft depth. In a different year this thread would have busted 1,500 pages and all that extra would have been vilifying the homing pigeons (Graham aimed for Adelaide and hit Perth - his accuracy under pressure remains work in progress, and of course Daniel still thinks he lives with Dimma, so him ending up in Dimma's lounge room on the Gold Coast is totally understandable). So do we really want to reinstate our exposure to Allen and co? 26 'aint that old.

Dodson. Agree about not picking rucks in the first two rounds... and yet a ruck that stays busy is like the last Tim-tam on the plate, compelling viewing. We want a tall or two and most of them seem to be ruck height nowadays (well taller than Nank anyway). Let's just pick the ones that will take the most marks and stay involved in the game. Dodson has at least half of that equation locked up.

Twomey's picks - the only dodgy pick he didn't send our way was Hotten. He doesn't know where to put them - giv'em to Richmond - 33% chance of being right after all.

PS Bullus love your posts as always and hated to hear how you had been brutalised and the impact it had/has for you.
PPS Love the Ashcroft at #1 & Marshall at #10 idea. Just love it. if we do rate Marshall for our third or fourth pick then It would be a champagne toast from me if they executed this
(I won't touch the stuff normally).
PPPS My sole contribution to the 1,000 page draft thread target - so forgive me if it is a little long. Or don't

So if we look at the 1st round from both Twomey and Fox Footy, either there is a bit of chatter and things are becoming clearer, or there is a bit of copying and both will look silly on draft night. The top 10's are quite similar.

Twomey 1st then Fox 2nd

1 - Lalor / Lalor
2 - FOS / FOS
3 - Smith / Smith
4 - Draper / Langford
5 - Ashcroft / Ashcroft
6 - Langford / Tauru
7 - Smillie / Smillie
8 - Travaglia / Draper
9 - Lombard / Lombard
10 - Tauru / Travaglia

Top 10 has exactly the same players, in a slightly different order though.

11 - Allan / Allan
12 - Lindsay / Lindsay
13 - Kako / Kako
14 - Shanahan / Armstrong
15 - Reid / Hotton
16 - Armstrong / Shanahan
17 - Berry / Berry
18 - J Whitlock / Faull

Relatively similar, now it gets interesting

19 - Hotton / Alger
20 - Hynes / Reid
21 - Dattoli / Dattoli
22 - Faull / Marshall
23 - M Whitlock / J Whitlock
24 - Oliver / Oliver
25 - Marshall / Hannaford
26 - Hannaford / Hynes
27 - Alger / M Whitlock
28 - Trainor
29 - Moraes
30 - Bowman

I did like the little bit at the bottom of Twomeys article, that suggested that we've been doing some recent work on back end draft prospects, I've said a few times on here that I like some of those guys, whether thats a tall, medium or small. One or 2 ok mids back there too.

I'd be happy if we continued to slide our latest pick back.

If Port offered that deal of 13 and 29 for 11 I'd be doing it. If we got Lindsay, then I'm happy with that pick, the next group, I'm happy to see who is taken in between and take whats left. Not much between that group in the 14 (which is our 11 in both phantoms) and 18.

Gain that later pick, trade another into next year, and then keep sliding that Port back by getting 2nds and 3rds next year.

If we get Lalor and Smillie, I can see us trading 11 & 23 for 8 to grab Tauru if he's still on the table.

Oliver - SNAPSHOT: “One of the most well regarded ball users in the draft, boasting a wand-like left foot and the ticker to take gutsy overhead marks.” – Michael Alvaro

Harrison Oliver put his name in lights on the representative stage this year. The highly touted defender broke through for a massive performance in his Vic Metro Under 18 debut, amassing 25 disposals, six marks, and five rebound 50s against the Allies. He defied the wet conditions on that day, and was not forgotten thereafter, for a high-class outing.

While he had his big moment in the 2024 National Championships, Oliver has been a staple of representative sides throughout his junior career. He was selected in the Under 12 and 15 School Sport Victoria (SSV) squads, before turning out for Vic Metro in the 2022 Under 16 championships and making his debut for Sandringham in the same year. A place in Metro’s Under 18 squad was almost inevitable.

Oliver has proven to be a serial winner across his top-age campaign. He played alongside a host of Sandringham teammates as Brighton Grammar took out the APS title, and went on to help the Dragons win a third consecutive Coates Talent League flag. In terms of individual honours, he was named in the Talent League Team of the Year and earned All Australian selection.

The 181cm prospect is equal parts courageous and classy. He is a Melbourne supporter, but looks to emulate fellow left-footer Luke Hodge with his intercept marking, run, and leadership across half-back. 2023 Sandringham graduate and current Bomber Archie Roberts is another player Oliver draws inspiration from in terms of his role.

Is Oliver a Vlas replacement.

I’m thinking we’re looking at Berry at #11.

If Lindsay’s there at #10 I’d take him but I dunno about RFC. He hasn’t been linked to us in anything I’ve come across so far but Allan was never linked to Melbourne.

Suppose we use 10-11 on smalls.

Twomey is linking us to Sims in his article. (We calling him “Dim”?) We may hit a tall or two at 18 on. Faull? Sims?

Whitlocks? I was thinking they’d go in the early teens but looks like that’s wrong.

We still need this Norfs thing to play out. Norfs should hang out until the pick. Will they have the stones?

Some good points. I don't agree that it's an average draft if we take Smillie. He's a unique athlete and very projectable whilst still producing at a high level most of this year. From when I've seen him, he doesn't just get touches because of his height. He gets involved in transition and can use it well. Polarising prospect but the reality is we could knock every prospect in some way for beating up on lesser junior opponents

At 10/11 I'd like 2 of Lindsay, Reid and Berry. Berry's probably still there if we do that Port swap.

Would WCE trade 12 for 20 and Port's 29, and then we use 12 on Jack Whitlock?

Lalor, Smillie/Tauru, Lindsay, Murphy/Berry and Whitlock, with picks 18, 23 and 24 to come.

I’d have a dim view if we don’t take Sims and I only want one of Goughs boys.

One trade I’ve seen elsewhere, but not mentioned on here is with GWS - 10/11 & 23 for 15 & 16. The thinking with this is that there’s someone GWS really like (might have been Travalgia) who won’t make it through to their picks. We’re then in the perfect position to pick Lindsay or Allan with 10/11 and then Berry and our preferred tall (Whitlock/Faull or maybe Shanahan) at 15/16.
