2024 Draft Thread

Rance was well and truly AA by 100 games.
Balta is a long way off Rance as a defender.
Pick 2 and a future 1st for Balta.
I would certainly consider it.

Rance had the luxury of playing in defence consistently, Balta has been swapped between being a forward, backman, ruckman & never been settled in one position. His best position is in defence, put him there let him settle & we'll see blossom.

Actually Alex Rance had played 107 games before he was named AA.
And was the age Balta was this
My point is Rance was a better defensive player at the same amount of games...by far.
Balta may improve. I am sure he will as he is entering his prime.

It's great to hear that there are some future leaders among the top draftees but even if we select the right ones, 18 year olds will require development & mentorship to harness those qualities as snr AFL players.
Chris Newman for example was great for Cotchin (outstanding leader) when he came into the system.
Who's going to help these kids flourish into our next generation of leaders.

Was really disappointing to read/hear many of our current youngsters had dropped off in standards a bit.
Another reflection (not just on Yze) but the lack of snr leadership within the playing group currently.
When your senior core are on their way out it’s no surprise the standards have dropped.

GWS. Reckon we will be working on Cadman. An offer of 1 and 21 would set the ball rolling. Perhaps not this year but later.
Highly unlikely for this year, and I would think they would want more than that as well. The question was more about getting suitable draft picks for this year using pick one and as far as I could see there was nobody who we could consider, maybe Saints if they get top level compensation for Battle.

I don't know who we'll pick at 1 but the one media person who would have the best idea, twomey, has us taking Langford, Lalor, Smith or FOS, so Langford appears to be in the mix

As mentioned, reckon he'll lower his rating once we get closer to the draft and he get's better intel.

Not many clubs looking to trade out of this draft. The general consensus is that next year’s draft is very shallow at this stage.

In that case I’d rather keep pick 18 than trade it for Essendon or Hawthorn F1 & F2 picks.

Where does this talk of next years draft being shallow come from?

Seems someone posted it, and its been repeated enough to make it fact.

It could yet end up very strong. We don't know.

Just like 4 months ago there were no talls in this draft. Now we'll probably have 8 or more taken in the top 30.

Not only should we bid on Ashcroft if Brisbane are being asses and dont want to or want too much
We should 100% bid on Marshall even if we trade with them .

Kid is serious player and almost like he was Ashcrofts brother
Marshall is an Ashcroft clone. Taller, faster and with even better endurance. Sub 6min 2k. Very little has been discussed about Marshall, I don’t know why. He’s up with the best in the draft and Richmond should target him. Place a bid on Ashcroft then place an early bid on Marshall. Not our first but definitely 1st round.

Cheers Cuz, interesting.

Still reckon a lot changes in the quality of drafts in 12 months (or less).

Does suggest we won't move too much into next year then you'd think.

Yeah, good point, how much could we make the Lions bleed if we bid 1 for Ashcroft and 9 for Marshal?

The “gettable” show on SEN have said on numerous occasions that the intel they have gotten from recruiters is that next year’s draft is shallow. They believe clubs will be trying hard to trade into the first round of this year’s draft and are prepared to trade out players to get it done.
An interesting trade and draft period coming up

Brisbane will trade out surplus players for points but bids on Ashcroft at 1 and Marshals at 9 would wipe them out. I don’t care I hope we can get Marshall.

The players they may be looking to trade are Robertson, McCarthy, Lyons, McKenna, Brain, Reville, Gardiner, Fort.

The top end for next year looks fine and I am sure there will be good players in the first two rounds but it sounds like it won’t have the depth of this year.

What’s their value? I don’t want them and hopefully neither does anyone else.
