2024 Draft Thread

By my calculations, Only 8 No.1's this century havnt been stars,

And some of them may still turn out to be,

And the others were very good players.

Jack watts and jon patton the closest thing to No.1 busts?

No.2 picks pretty much the same.

Scott gumbleton, harley bennell, jon orourke and josh schache the busts this century.

Pick 1 or 2 buys stars in roughly equal measures.

But i think the value in 1 this year maybe in setting up for subsequent picks?

But statisically (dog balls test) there is no difference between 1 and 2

But the data does suggest it falls away pretty sharply at pick 3 with d martin and c judd the most notable exceptions
And there is usually a Brownlow superstar gamebreaker who turns out to be the real no.1 or 2 hiding somewhere between pick 8 and pick 25. When you consider the spread of clubs who have drafted them, its a lucky dip.

Been thinking about this all day, the best thing I can say about FOS is that he is rusty.

Hope he shows a lot more at TAC level over the next few weeks.
I agree l think the rest of the coates league will decide our pick, lot's of knee jerk reactions on here towards FOS.
He is under done and it showed ,turned over the ball in most of his possessions, and to say he won VC the match is bs,the game is played over 4 quarters ,and Lalor got the free and kicked the goal that put the match out of Allies reach .

Its a robust debate which is great,

But its notable snake was there and went with an open mind.

Snake has a long demonstrable history of junior watching, and is a measured judge

So to dismiss it as BS group think is a bit disrespectful

Me personally? Id toss a coin between FOS and Jagga at this stage,

Classic 1-2 tussle where both will likely be stars.

If we can sucker norf or wc into Smilie,

We could get both

If were going off Coates form in conjunction with Champs,

langford is top 5 isnt he?

Its not bs Bengal. He got them home. I was at the game and had something else I had to get to, was intending to leave at 3Q time. By then I was encouraged but not converted. I was walking out of the ground and saw FOS superbly win a ball in a congested pack, step out of traffic with ease and drill it forward, and I stopped, thought shhesh. decided to stay. As well as some key classy damaging possessions, it was his leadership on the ground and on the bench too, his talk and body language.

I can understand why some might still be sceptical, but I'm not.

From what I could see, FOSters didn't even start the game. Then, when he did come on, it was on a wing with heavy rotation. It wasn't until the 3rd quarter that he was put on the ball. He had a big last quarter.

Dunno what people expect ? He hadn't played in 10
weeks. If he was thrown into a National Champs game on the ball, straight up, without any prep and did a hamstring, we'd all be spewing.

Its totally fine, I don't think bengal was directing it at me, and even if he was its fine. I'm just an interested fan. I just read the match report, FWIW, also said FOS 'steered them home', so I'm not on my pat malone.

It was the class and impact that stood out, underdone or no.

Ive said for years,

Close last quarters of big games sort wheat from chaff emphatically

And a mid drifting forward and taking a heavily contested mark inside 50 with scores level,

Is a pretty clear indicator of quality.

But Jagga Smith approaches big moments similarly. He will slot a goal from the boundary in a close game like hes jack reiwoldt.

Both are rolled gold

A very Good year to bottom out and hold a big hand i reckon

Really hope Toce is up to the task

I just read that if Josh Battle accepts Hawthorns huge offer the Saints will get a top 10 compensation pick. As it stands now that’d be pick 6 (I think).

OK, to put my footy sommelier hat on, tasting note for FOS: in tight I'm getting Lachie Neale with a hint of Cotch, delivery and on the outside I get a strong hit of Shane Edwards with a whiff of James Sicily on a long kick. HA HA!

The bs comment wasn't directed at you as a insult ,but l disagree .
I watched the match again ,to be honest l wasn't really impressed by it,l thought many VC player's where playing it up for the recruiters, but anyway watch FOS more closely and he turned it over a lot ,and even in the last quarter he wasn't as good as made out,,a couple of decent possessions thats it .
Now l am a Lalor fan ,but most of his disposals where effective or in front of a team mate ,kicked 3 nearly 4 .
From what l was told this morning he is still carrying a niggling injury .

I always watch with a open mind ,and never judge a player or disregard a player after one match .
The one thing l do look at is what attributes do player's have for AFL,or don't have .

I look at player's and how they would fit in at Richmond ,OUZO likes pressure player's who are physical and good kicks.
To me the biggest issue we have is the forward line ,we need player's who can mark and kick goals, and have some nous .

I reckon Langford has got himslef into the first round but I don't think top 5.

8-18 for me. But he has been very good. Clean handler and a wonderful user. Pace the question mark.

When the heat was on in the SA MATCH Smith struggled ,after half time SA slowed right down and he got into the game more ,l still think we can do better than Jagga

I do believe we won't let pick 1 slip. A lot of comments on who we'll pick but I think most have it out of Smille, O'Sullivan or Smith for our first pick.
If we can get another top-10 pick draper and also another late in the first round Shanahan or Whitlock it would be a super haul.

What's your dream 3?
This is based on us getting another top 10 pick if Bakes goes and getting another in the first round by doing some deals with our multiple 2nd and 3rd rounders.

ill be very interested in his 20m and agility.

didn't look slow to my eye

Lombard who is a deadset gun tied to GC.

Just adding to my post. Smillie many have him No 1 but here some don't. We have been crying out for a big-bodied (194 cms) mid, so whats people's angst towards him? Not a two-way runner?

yeah we all look for different things.

Lalor was imposing.

Im really big on how a reputed player goes when the going gets tough.

1. when they are getting flogged (uphill skiers) and
2. when a game is close late (match winning ability)
3. duel-sidedness (the genuine footballer)
4. contested marking
5. these days, they need either explosiveness, a step, or a change of direction

red flags for me are

1. regularly stands up in tackles (RCD effect - means they get tackled often)
2. high uncontested possessions
3. defensive unaccountability
4. looks like an Essendon player

hes been big bodied since he was 15, and his trajectory is going down IMO

im calling man child. Not saying hes no good, just not in my top 10

Harvey Langford is 190 mid and trajectory is consistently up over 3 years.

im calling Langford>Smilie
