Who is your NO1 option

It will all come down to the priorities that the club has for spending money. If we go for a big name we will pay more and have less to spend on assistants and football development. If we go for someone with less experience and profile we will will have more to spend on those other areas. It will be a tough decision but at least the good news is that we have some good candidates available. Will the club get it right? I hope so.
IMO I would only lean towards an experienced coach if they have a premiership under their belt in recent times (that rules out Malthouse - 10 years at Collingwood with all their resources and favourtism from the AFL and no flag) Matthews ticks most boxes but does he have the passion to go around again?
Of the new emerging coaches - really it is pot luck - any one of them could become successful or could be terrible.
The most pressing need for the new coach is to change the culture of the club from one that accepts mediocrity to one that has the self-belief that it is a great and successful club once again.

Guy Mckenna!!!
why are people over looking this guy?
has it all
young, moviated to coach at a senior level
experinced player and assistant coach in successful AFL teams

you know it make sense!!

I voted for Hinkley as I feel he comes from a winning culture and very recent premiership club, and therefore would have a lot to offer. My only reservation is the uncertainty of how he'll go as a senior coach. But I guess that question applies to Buckley and every other candidate who hasnt yet coached at senior level.

I voted Hardwick but provided the process was good I'd be happy with any of the coaches proposed in the vote other than Sheeds

I'd like to modify this again.

Director of Coaching (Mentor role): - K.Sheedy
Senior Coach: - D.Hardwick / A.Richardson
Senior Coach's Executive Assistant: (Administrative) J.Longmire / R.Wiley
Junior Development Co-ordinator: C.McCrae / A.McConnell / R.Hyde
Development Coaches: K.Johnson / W.Campbell
VFL Coach: J.Rawlings / S.Rehn
Midfield Coach: G. "Buddha" Hocking / A.Simpson / T.Viney / R.Wiley dual role
Defense Coach: A.Collins / L.Cameron / B.Montgomery / B.Sanderson / G.Archer
Forward Coach: D.Cloke & C.McCrae combined (talls & smalls) / P.Hudson / M.Williams / J.Longmire dual role

Specialist Ruck/Tall Fwd Coach: D.Cloke dual role / S.Rehn dual role
Specialist Tackling Coach: A.Collins dual role.
Specialist Kicking Coach: L.Cameron dual role / R.Wiley triple role.

Fitness & Running Coach: C.Falloon
Weights & Conditioning Coach: M.Dugina / B.Davoren
Weights & Boxing Development: J.Vickery
Physiotherapist & Fitness Coach: D.Kellaway

Certainly some options there.

Must say, I've been getting a few confidential reports from inside the footy scene over the last month giving some clear repeated messages, being:

1. Don't consider Malthouse, because he puts himself first and the poor inside culture at Collingwood is their main hurdle against winning a premiership.

2. Don't consider Matthews. He has no interest in Richmond, and would only do it if the money tempted him.

3. Sheedy would be perfect for a mentoring role for the new coach.

4. Alan Richardson, and different people inside AFL but outside the RFC keep giving me the same message, would be perfect for Richmond. He develops the skills, confidence & performance of developing players. He gets on extremely well with Matty Knights and together they have worked wonders at Essendon. Some even say that he is the reason Matty has looked so good.
And that he IS genuinely interested in the Richmond job and does see something in our younger list. Alan needs to market himself better.
Same message different people.

5. People like what Hardwick's does, but no one knows him well enough to give a strong opinion.

6. Buckley is inspirational and has a strong personality, but no one has seen him coach and no one knows what he'd actually be like.

Food for thought anyway.

I heard Alan Richardson on SEN the other day & was quite impressed.
He is all those things you have said Phanto.
He has coached his own team to a couple of flagd [East Burwood in the EFL] has also coached Coburg early in the venture with the Tiges iirc. I think he & Spud didn't see eye to eye, so he left & Flood took over the following year.

I'd be very happy if the Tiges interviewed him.

On Richardson, he was also an assistant at the Dogs, was VFL coach of the year at Coburg & was in charge of building Collingwoods highly successful football academy.

There is a snippet in today's Hun suggesting not to dismiss him as a serious contender for the Richmond gig.

Hope so. Leysy's on at 33's. ;D

Alan Richardson would be a good candidate, as would Hinkley.

I think we need a senior person with wide experience in an overview/management role but I'm fast coming to the conclusion that there are a few suitable candidates for this role. Sheedy would be good, as would Neil Balme. Laidley, Robert Shaw or even Craig Lambert would all be able to do the job.

With an older first-time coach like Richardson or Hinkley, there is quite a bit of flexibility as to the way the support role is structured. It could be in the form of a manager like Chris Connolly (Balme and Shaw would be perfect) , a mentor like Sheedy, or a senior coaching assistant (Laidley).

Laidley would probably earn more as a senior coaching assistant than he did as senior coach at NM.

My new preference? Hinkley. Balme as manager, and maybe, just maybe, they could both talk one of Harley or Milburn into retiring and coming on board as a defensive line coach.

Agree, except the "Midfield Coach", we've got a midfield coach playing right now in Ben Cousin's, he should take that role over now up to and including his retirement.

The only other thing missing was "Psychology", the mental toughness side of the players needs to be addressed as well.
