Where are you Tiger Army ??

Round 4 average game attendance of 26,199
  • Lowest for the year
  • Lower than any round in 2019, 2018 or 2017
  • But admittedly higher than round 14 2016 (which was over the bye, had 6 games, 2 of which were a gws home game and a york park game, dragging the average down)
  • Tiges v dogs a not-terrible-not-amazing 43k, but that was highest by a lot, with next highest attended game 13k less
But 419,000 people at the grand prix, a record.

Maybe a lot of the reasons discussed are noise, with it really boiling down to people not liking the current AFL product? I know I personally used to watch as many games as I could over a weekend, and now find AFL level footy a chore to watch unless it's a Richmond game.

*But I still hate the ticketing system
Thanks for sharing those numbers T3000. Interesting.

Some Vic fans would have chosen the Grand Prix over live footy this weekend I think, given 2 years without a GP here.

At the same time, it doesn't seem to be covid keeping people away from gatherings. As many of us have said before on here, restaurants are chockers. NRL averaging similar crowds to those PC (pre-covid). Is the cost to attend the footy too high for many, is this a deterrent?

I hate the stand rule, and hate the numerous rule changes under Shocking these last 3-4 years.
Most of all, I hate the lack of consistency in umpiring decisions and the poor umpiring quality overall (prob because of all the rule changes). I get no joy watching footy these last few years given the total lack of consistency.

Consistency in approach breeds trust. The opposite is true too.
So, ultimately, I personally hope people are voting with their feet and not attending in silent protest at these *smile* new rules.

Trouble is that non attendance hurts the clubs way more than it hurts the AFL. Clubs make money out of arses in the stands as there's set minimums they have to generate to pay for the stadium usage before they start to draw an income from the game.
AFL don't give a *smile* if fans turn up or not as long as they push the on button of their T.V. n generate advertising views.

Not sure game attendance numbers have a priority over TV audience numbers for the AFL anymore.

Broadcasters will pay the AFL to have one game every night of the week, a double header on Saturdays and another double header on either Friday or Sunday.

During the covid shut-down their technicians were able to demonstrate how to provide a crowd atmosphere at empty stadiums and they are now busily working on CGI technology to replace the old cardboard cutouts they used to put in the seats.

The diehards that want to watch the game in real time will have to pay $1000 a head to sit behind glass in a lounge on level 2. There will also be fireworks and "entertainment" for them at half-time.

How many more weeks of poor crowds until the penny drops for the AFL.

Time for the arrogance and urine taking to end, they know that the Stand rule is not popular.

The time is long overdue that they started to listen.

It's the peoples game, not the AFL's.

That cabal is so insulated and all have their heads so far up their own backsides that penny ain't dropping.

True TM.

Hopefully - and I doubt it happens - the clubs collectively get together to lobby for change. If it affects attendance across all games, all Clubs are impacted.
I'm going to believe they can come together like NATO and the US to fight the bully AFL. But just like the real world, not sure much will happen.

Lets hope ppl stop watching on TV if the product is poor. This year, we have the election, World Cup Soccer and ppl out and about more. I have no idea what the TV audience is like - hopefully they are voting with their remotes too.

editing my own post - didnt realise the soccer was on at the end of 2022:LOL:

100% afl priorities yep.

But I wonder how tv ratings are trending. Is every bum not on a seat at the ground instead on a couch watching it live? Is it even up with (potentially) more people staying in (covid and $$). Or is the decrease in interest to attend reflected in ratings too? (no idea by the way)

Interesting to see what happens for the Dreamtime game at the G as the AFL honchos are about to start fixturing dates to games from R10 onwards, and as that game is always a Saturday night, it would be fixtured on May 21 which is election day.

No excuses other clubs supporters are attending and crowd numbers much higher. One would think being and raving about being the biggest club people would actually attend game. I guess these supporters are bandwagoners and only attend when Dusty plays or we are winning.

A bit unfair there. We have had the 2 highest crowds in the first 4 rounds. One of the other games was against an interstate team that normally doesn’t attract big crowds and a *smile* time slot and the other was an away game at the dump and again in a *smile* time slot.

That’s the thing, other clubs supporters aren’t attending.

The afl came out predicting big crowds for round 1. It didn’t happen and now radio silence on the disappointing crowds attending.

If I use the phone it will be a screenshot, I'm certainly not giving away any data to some mob who want me to have a digital wallet. My wallet is leather and will stay that way, it contains cash, which I use all the time, it is legal tender in Australia and all of its Territories (says so on the note). Paper is compelling technology - it works . . . it works when the wifi is down, it works when you can't get a signal, it has no battery to run down, it does not take mountains of energy to run, it does not contain rare minerals and it is a renewable resource.

I am going to sit where I bloody well like, its general admission not reserved seats.

Totally with you David. I'm an old man before my time. Was partially raised by depression-WWII generation grandparents. So fair to say I have some values and perceptions that are older school than my peers. I carry a work issued smartphone, only because they give me one. If they didn't, I'd probably just have a $30 'burner' phone that I'd use for texts and calls. In fact, I've stopped carrying a phone of a weekend. I put the smartphone in a basket in the living area and there it stays of a weekend. So would be no good asking me for an electronic ticket at the footy when I don't even have a phone with me.

It always makes me raise my eyebrows at how there seems to be a level of smugness and arrogance about all of the new digital technology and how wonderful it is. How much easier and convenient it makes life. But because people are mindless consumers, with no capability for a little bit of deeper critical thought, it seems there is little discussion or thought around the immense extra complexity and fragility we are building into all of the systems that we rely on to keep society running.

Sure they (new digital technologies) have given us a lot of extra capabilities that past generations couldn't dream of. But ask ourselves at what cost? The cost that is the elephant in the room to me is far less robust systems. It would take a series of relatively minor failures to bring the entire system and society to it's absolute knees in very quick time, compared to pre digital times - or at least, times with less digital saturation. And when you overlay that with how mentally fragile our pampered society is, with little capacity for controlling immediate emotional whims (stoicism is frowned upon in contemporary culture) people would lose their minds and either be unproductively curled up in a foetal position, or alternatively be looting, murdering marauding savages within a week.

Its what happens when you bumped tigers vs blues off the opening game.
Tiges and blues actually wanted to make Easter Thursday their special game. It just so happened that the first one of these fell on the opening round. So the league then turned it into the instant traditional season opener, when that wasn't even the original request.
