When will Bernie go !!

AFL/VFL history is littered with premiers in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of building a nucleus.

Lol.

You do strike me as the type to sack a coach if he hasn't won a flag in 3 years.

Dimma values being honest, saying it's okay to be vulnerable, and if you're wrong you should admit it. You should take up Dimma's philosophy... it won us a flag.

... and no refutation of the argument, just mindless posturing.

Sure that's your answer, kid? :hihi

:rofl

You were refuting my claim! This is where we're at:

- Full rebuilds usually take 7-8 years
- But sometimes flags are won in 2, 3, or 4 years... ... ...

Is that your refutation? :spin

lol, your argument was that premierships *must* take 7-8 years.

so now it's "usually"?

if you allow for "usually" (wise) does that not put Dimma in the window of possibility from 2013 onwards? after all, he had the same nucleus of stars then. plus some handy seasoned veterans. we won 15 games in 2013 (same as this year) and we lost the EF to the 9th placed team. with a coleman medallist and a brownlow medallist the year before.

fair dinkum, it's too easy

Still no response :hihi

Kid, you've been embarrassing yourself since you self-quoted a few pages ago.

I just don't think you watch enough football, bud. Good try though.

Who, Ian?

The biggest furphy in this silly thread is that 2013-16 were wasted years.

Wasted? They are the reason we won the flag. They were the crucible that tempered us for the furnace. We weren't going to win the flag in 2013, we couldn't beat Carlton. We couldn't beat North two years later. The players and coach failed on the big stage. But they played on the big stage. The felt the agony and humiliation of defeat that spurs men to greater deeds. So did the coach. By the grand final, 10 of our men had already played four massive stakes finals in front of 90,000+, and everyone else in the side had done it at least twice. Plus countless season openers, Dreamtimes and Anzac Eves. (Big crowds at the G are our wheelhouse, baby.)

Only 12 of our premiership 22 were on the list in 2013. We had half a premiership side.
We had half a premiership coaching group last year.
Let's hope we can keep both groups together for a few years yet.

Yup. I keep coming back to the post about success not being a ratchet. Might have been Snake or Sin. A great post about the need to fall back to move forward. Reminds me of a plot line in Westworld. You need pain/suffering to anchor your humanity. I believe if we had 'stolen' a GF in 2015 we would be where the Doggies are now. (Bevo is Northey. You get a group to play on emotion but they can't sustain it without system). I prefer a slow steady building of a system that allows a Graham or a Broad to step into the seniors and play a role.

Baron, you're not only missing the point, you're wrong. We would not have won the flag in those years whether we used ball security, territory footy or the Flying V formation. Go have a look at our teams for the three elimination finals. Look who played 10, 15, 20 games in those seasons. You'll see names like Morris, Petterd, Aaron Edwards, Batchelor, Thomas, Vickery, Chaplin, Walking Frame Foley and Old Man Newman: Not premiership players. Not Rioli, Lambert, Butler, Castagna, Prestia, Caddy, Nank, Graham.

Look who only played 9 games in 2013, which back then was an improvement for him: Dylan Grimes. Look who played 5, 8 and 4 games in 2013-15: Astbury. Shedda was flying in '15 before breaking his leg.

Personnel matters.

Ball security might have been a stifling zig, but it was an aspect of our game that had been poor. How calm were we all by Saturday, September 30, 2017, at the way our men know when and how to control the ball.

You wanted a Great Leap. We got building blocks.

You want poetry? Of course it was all going to come together in '17, and not a moment before. Orgasmically cosmic, baby. We all came so hard together the MCG shook for a month.

I wasn't sold on Dimma and I wondered aloud if he was a team builder/system coach (a stats obsessed NFL wannabe) who couldn't get them to the top of the mountain. But I always thought I understood his thinking. All these blokes can play. They are the best of the best. Duds don't get drafted. Some might not make it on the big stage but they can all play. The 'handbrake' was teaching blokes who want to break every line that anyone can do that. You need a baseline of defence. You need your fallback to be stoicism. You need every line to be able to hold and grind. When it opens up their skills will come through. But the hard part is learning that ability to dig in. Dusty has only really started tackling this year. He is the exception. And what an exception.

Like it Spook but I can't agree.

We lost a couple of close ones in 2013 and 2015 that came down to tactical inflexibility.

Should've finished top four in both. With a double chance, who knows?

Let's not rewrite history into 2013-2017 being some gradual ascent.

Dimma had a willing, talented list five years ago. He stalled and couldn't get the gear stick back in for a long time.

Having a flag under the belt feels amazing but Dimma will always be a tin-eared coach for mine.

He's gone. Full fruitcake that is. 8-

Like I said earlier. Some advice the old bloke who taught me my trade that has stayed with me all these years: people have got some funny ideas.

Here I am thinking I just have more reservations on the head coach than most :hihi

Hardly controversial.

You're just upset you didn't get the weird "redemption" you clearly expected from an anonymous internet thread.

Fruitcake indeed.

Got the redemption from Dimma. Said it when he was reappointed, I believe in redemption (nothing to do with me on this topic, I was right. That's different).

That's cray-cray dude, but to each their own.
