When will Bernie go !!

Come on snake - when the experts get it wrong they were only joking or you are just misunderstanding their genius - you are obviously neurotic and require a slap on the face and cold shower because this is not really happening :spin

Can just imagine the responses if we had a bad year and the brightsiders had said move on, nothing to see here.

As always the most loud end up being the most wrong.

You and others continue to labour - quite sweatily - under the presumption that Dimma is the driving force behind this flag.

He is like Alan Joyce or John Worsfold.

Competent in some areas, just a plodder in others.

I realise this difficult for folks to accept after such a wonderful weekend, but all the evidence is there. You just gotta look beyond the usual lazy media guff.

What happens now? Dimma plods on. I'm cool with that as long as he remembers that 2017 was all about banning his football instincts and letting others have input.

Amazing what a good game plan can achieve. A premiership.

Well done Dimma. Didn't think he could realise and accept his faults and embrace change and input the way he did. Not as stubborn and conservative as I thought. Also takes a big man to admit he was the problem.

Reckon he stays to see the end of his current contract ;D

Still, you have to admire the chutzpah of those specific individuals who were so comprehensively wrong but still have the gall to front up here claiming they were right. It's almost as if they think we are complete idiots and they can just pretend all those things they said never happened and we won't notice.

Yup. Early this week I thought this thread would peter out with a number of '... I was wrong...' comments, but it hasn't.

If anything, it's now more entertaining. The verbal contortions I'm seeing from some are hilarious in s never-ending search for vindication.

Me? I'm pleased for Dimma. Seems like a good bloke - and an excellent communicator.

Who, Ian?

The biggest furphy in this silly thread is that 2013-16 were wasted years.

Wasted? They are the reason we won the flag. They were the crucible that tempered us for the furnace. We weren't going to win the flag in 2013, we couldn't beat Carlton. We couldn't beat North two years later. The players and coach failed on the big stage. But they played on the big stage. The felt the agony and humiliation of defeat that spurs men to greater deeds. So did the coach. By the grand final, 10 of our men had already played four massive stakes finals in front of 90,000+, and everyone else in the side had done it at least twice. Plus countless season openers, Dreamtimes and Anzac Eves. (Big crowds at the G are our wheelhouse, baby.)

Only 12 of our premiership 22 were on the list in 2013. We had half a premiership side.
We had half a premiership coaching group last year.
Let's hope we can keep both groups together for a few years yet.

Many of us joked about what certain posters would do if we won a flag :hihi

This is what it comes down to. It takes 7-8 years to do a full rebuild. In 2010, we all knew that. We trended upwards consistently for 6 years (2014 a half step back followed by an inspirational run), then we had a poor year. Then we won the flag.

In hindsight, our 8 year premiership rebuild was successful and consistent with what many could have predicted back in 2010 when we started this journey. Putting last year into perspective, 2016 was completely within the normal boundaries of a premiership rebuild. Geelong lived it before their 2007-2011 run.

The most imaginative narrative in the world can't compete with the fact that premiership rebuilds have been shown to take 7-8 years and it's not uncommon to have one backwards year during that time.

No narrative required.

We are an example of a proper premiership rebuild :cupgold

Yep, if we could go back to 2010 and talk to any Richmond supporter about our rebuild, even a village idiot would never have said "it will be a failure if we don't win a premiership by 2013!!"

Unfortunately the village idiot does think that way, hence this thread is still going!

Oh, yeah. 2014. Critical year in our flag. 3-10 showed us everything that was wrong. Nine in a row gave the players belief they could do anything. They got flogged in an interstate final in front of a hostile crowd. Another experience under the belt. The memory of that would have spurred the notion, "If we thought 50,000 at Adelaide Oval was a tough crowd, wait til we get these jokers at our joint".

Our blokes knew the Crows were not ready for what was about to hit them. They knew they could handle 100,000 at the G. They were ready to win the biggest game of their lives, on the biggest stage, because of their collective experience and shared growth over what for some has been a decade. Hardwick has guided the group now for eight years.

We likes a racing analogy. Bart could take a horse that wouldn't get a start in a Cox Plate and win a Melbourne Cup with it. "How do you get a horse fit?" he asked his father. "Slowly," said Cummings, Sr.

If the build to this premiership has seemed slow, it's because it began in 2006, when we drafted Jack, Sheds, Andy Collins and Jake King. (Andy got us Grigg, Jake helped a young Cotchin and co. walk tall.) We've added one or two pieces nearly every year since. In 2014 we added three jockeys: Butler, Castagna, Lambert.

Change happens slowly, then all at once you win a Melbourne Cup.

I've just gone back and reread a lot of this thread. It is a ripper. Lots of entrenched positions. Should continue for a while more.

Quite a few posters turning on the players when we had our spell of 4 losses. Even a poster boy gave up on Hardwick.

I avoided this thread because of this circus. I will come back to it in a while and really enjoy the discussions. We'll all get the chance to gloat and poke, Right now though it's tiger time. I know Zips is happy as is Ninja and I am happy for them and all of us who have followed this mighty (again) club.

I am pleased for Dimma, the players and everyone connected to the club.

Those still fighting the war should realise that the shooting has stopped.

If he can pull off the 2018 flag (and why not) he’s our = 2nd most successful coach ever
Tom Hafey 4
Damien Hardwick 2
Dan Minogue 2.

Premiers often look imposing, but yeah why not indeed,

We have had two glory periods 20-43 when we won 5 flags, 67 -80 when we won 5 flags interspersed by droughts of 24 years and 37 years till 2017.

By my reckoning and using my numerology skills we should win the next 4 and then have a 50 year drought.

Being old and greedy, I would take that in a heart beat.

It has for most of us. There's still one or two darksiders fighting on though.

Reminds me of those Japanese soldiers after WWII who refused to believe the war was over and insisted on dying gloriously for the emperor.

That anti-Dimma kool-aid is powerful stuff, some just can't kick it.

nup, don't agree at all.

this is old-school thinking and it doesn't apply these days. 2014-16 were wasted on Dimma's half-baked possession game. It was pure Hawthorn wishful thinking and it didn't suit our playing group at all.

the evidence is right in front of your face.

13th in 2016 with a horrible game plan, the third year Dimma had rolled out that crap.

1st in 2017 with a game plan that maximized the natural skillset of our players.

tactics. fortunes can turn on a dime with the right ones.

our playing list has been solid the whole way through. what changed was the coach being told he was lost and had to relinquish his tendency to micro-manage the players. the club has said it repeatedly - there were too many rules.

saying we had half a premiership side in 2013 is silly. i'm sure the likes of Jacko, Kingy, newmo etc would've gone ok on saturday.

you keep droning on and on about this but AFL/VFL history is littered with premiers in the 2nd, 3rd or 4th year of building a nucleus. give it up, bud.

The strength of your argument will be seen next year

If Dimma just sticks with this years plan and we underperform then you will be proven correct

If we adjust the plan and perform well then Dimma has learnt from past mistakes

Only the future will tell
