Welcome Tom Brown

Is it though? I think Morris and co. are doing a good job with the talent available but the talent available has been getting a bit thin of late.
Probably a bit of both. They’d be doing their best sure but the soft cap at the level is way different from pre covid. It has an impact on development.

All clubs have got the same cap.

I think there's a few things at play.
Later picks.
Less opportunity. (Trying to keep the core flag team together)
Lack of continuity in coaching. I'm not sure fly is the panacea to everything.

Just like Dimma didn't single handedly get us into Dynasty territory fly didn't single handedly hold our development together. We had development coaches under fly, and we're doing the a disservice if we think they didn't do anything but follow fly's orders.

They do all have the same cap, but Dimma was taking a bigger piece of the pie.
With Dimma gone there will be more money to spread around the other coaches.

I reckon Fly is the panacea , and I think his record speaks for itself , no body better at developing young talent ,but of course he needs a great team around him as well , now that’s not having a go at Morro , as you’ve pointed out lots of circumstances around where we sit on the VFL ladder and injuries are also definitely a factor and the fact our VFL boys are nowhere near as talented as we had a couple years back .

Just on Brown , I’m a fan and think he can be a very good AFL half back , however was a passage of play last Thursday were I didn’t like his workrate/ want for the contest , plenty of talent, just an area no doubt they are working on.

Hope the 14 disposals didn’t include kick ins this week?

Tom Brown (14 disposals, five rebound-50s, four marks)

"He was okay without being outstanding, the bar has certainly raised for him over the last few weeks. His ball use was very good, but I think he's capable of taking it to another level."
Thats a compliment without much gusto.
Damning with faint praise
Its like a soft wet handshake

McRae is doing a great job at the Pies, and was part of a fantastic team with us. Around that he was at the Hawks in 2021, when they finished down the bottom. He was at the Pies in the Buckley years as they slid down the ladder, was at the Lions with Voss and was with us with Wallace.
He certainly used his early years to learn how not to run a club!

I see his biggest strength as getting the best out of individuals, knowing how they tick , who needs a hug and who needs a Chinese burner , outstanding communicator who genuinely cares for his team

I heard that Dimma took a pay cut to keep as many of his deputies as possible.

Dimma stormed into the change rooms last year at half time and gave Brown an almighty spray for not going hard enough at the contest.
Needs another spray

Comparable to who?
Collingwood who spend/spent a bucket load more on recruiting than us? (I had good Intel they had a paid team of 20 full/part time scouts across the country).

If we're talking past tense (Fly) he was here when Dimma wasn't on the big coin. The big coin came after the three Cups.

That's the other misconception. More Dollars always = better. Wallace cost a fortune. Was he worth it?

If Dimma was on a million a year and say Minnie becomes coach he may only get 500-600 thousand. Leaving an extra 400-500 grand a year to spend.
Of course money doesn't guarantee anything but it sure helps.
We were very lucky/well managed thru the Dimma years.
Having Fly who was still on the coaching merry go round and gaining experience to get his shot when the time was right. Leppa had just been sacked from Brisbane and was looking for a job. Caracella and Rutten were also on the coaching merry go round.
As the tigers improved and started winning premierships all the assistant coaches were well sought after and get the improved pay increases.

Big call for a 19 year old kid thats played less than 20 VFL games and no AFL games coming off an extended injury
Yes, When Dylan Grimes first came to the tigers he spent some time playing for the vfl 2nds. Think it was called the development league then. He was a skinny kid who basically only defended.
Brown looks a decent prospect to me. He is good overhead, moves well and kicks the ball well.
I suspect the comments by the coach are because he wants more and expects more from a talented kid

Grimes is one of the greats, truly unique game. Brown is totally different, he’s an attacking back, doesn‘t play the same role at all. The closest he could play would be Shorts role or hopefully Vlastuin if he improves his intercepting game.
Dylan Grimes didnt become the Dylan Grimes we know for the first 3-4 years

He was a skinny under sized kid during his hamstring problem days

Lets see how he develops if he ever makes it

It was obvious Grimes was good from the start. The hamstring injuries curtailed him for a bit but his talent was evident early.

Grimes showed alot from the start, as brave as they come and fast, but those hammys bent him over.
That bump in the final against North will always be remembered

Nothing in Brown's first 18 months or his junior care makes me thin he can emulate Grimes. Not a thing.

I don't think he is anything like Grimes as a player, not sure why the comparison is even being made.

What we shouldn't do is rewrite history. Grimes spent the first year playing for Coburg reserves, at Coburg vfl and out with an eye injury. He played his first game in his 2nd season and did well but was initially known as a negating spoiler. In fact from memory he had some record number of spoils early on.

Brown has time and has hardly been on the park. I suspect we will see him at AFL level this year at some stage

The danger you have when you have success is trying to get the ingredients the same to recreate........history shows that we don't as humans learn from history.
We need to develop the next generation of players who have attributes that can be used together as the pieces that fit together to create success. We spent 37 years trying to get the next Royce and the next this and that. You never can. We got a #4 who was polar opposite to Royce but just as effective in deciding Finals matches.
