Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

he's not just playing a small forward role, he's stepping up into the lids/lennon role of leadup forward.
Defensively he hits fast and hard, but last week johannisen ran riot. schooled the kid in the second half.

that the norm smith medallist is all over a rookie in his 12 game is not important. but come the end of the year it is.
george has to learn, he has 15 matches.
he's not there to be pretty or to have rioli class. best comparison is picken at the dogs - dogged, competitive and bringing the heat

When you're making a comparison to Picken are you talking type, role ,style or what he should aspire to.
He may "aspire" but doesn't do anything to compare as to role or style. Picken is a damn good player, hasn't got a big profile but is very much under rated. He has skill, toughness, but the biggest difference between he and George is, he has football nouse. He knows how to position himself, where to run and when, spatial awareness and more all round skill. Apart from that they're similar ;D
Picken way more> than George. No comparison apart from being a harrier, sometimes.
George can run fast and tackle (3.4 a game) That's it in a nutshell.
I don't have any angst about George but I'm a bit amused with how many talk him up. Young, doesn't shirk it and is enthusiastic and can run. The rest..may come, or may not. He's averaging 7, yes 7 effective disposals for 82% Game time
And people think that's good. Really?
Then they'll make excuses like, it's the forward entries. Here's a tip George's role isn't just to sit in a forward pocket waiting for the ball all game.

His effective disposals for his last 3 games have been 6 (Mel) 5 (ADE) 4 (WB) averaging 85% game time, and people are saying he's going ok.

Now I suggest you read those figures again.

George has youth on his side, whether that translates into a career remains to be seen. Very flawed and limited for mine, he will have the odd good passage of play, but then commit the most fundermental error that proves so costly.
The place to learn and eradicate that is in the vfl. Maybe it's time to try another player that can do more, more often.

Yep, well said. George has good traits and bad traits. Remove the outlier of 4 goals v Lions and he's got 4 goals from the other 6 games. Being manic and chaotic is fine but he still needs to work on composure and disposal.

Should have been demoted a couple of weeks ago, has got to go back now. Is a momentum killer. Still can make it but must be better than what he is now.

Was better than butler and markov.

At least he does something.

Another typical George game.
10 possessions, 6 effective disposals from 78% game time. But kicked a goal

Don't doubt that the pundits here are right and all things being equal should go to the twos....BUT

He didn't butcher the snap around the body that had to be kicked and Markov needs to go down to the twos first. Do we have two someones we can promote that would contribute or would we be doing a Morris.

We've got to stop rewarding mediocrity. It's costing us games. Are they actually improving, stagnating or going backwards.
It's ok to preach "structure" but it's making a mockery of it if their contribution is absolutely minimal, or is costly to the team.
A lot of *smile* all this chaos and pressure they put on. A decent player with some football nouse will know when and where to run and set or kick goals. That puts pressure on. Not maniacally running around in a fast manner.

He has to be dropped. Small forward pressure has been adopted by every team in the comp.
What's the plan B?

Yep good point oldie. Compare ours to the bombers fantasia green and tippa. They pressure and know how to kick a goal. They have 3 quality smalls.

Green is a bit of a dud but the other two are good.

we need more.
our forward line is crazy young - rioli, george, butts, markov, elton. as many have sad having lloyd instead of markov would help.
george can focus more on defense.
but we need outside speed in the middle, so rioli will play more time upfield. george and butler have to get their mojo back. feeling tired/sore/hurt. time to play
huge game next week. last week he got rolled by JJ, and now he must compete against williams and wilson

Enjoying the clear lens you bring to the table fella. I haven't watched many games this year so interesting to read this perspective.

On an unrelated matter, could either Dan or George roll through the midfield?

cheers

cheers willo i definitely mean aspire to.
agree with your view of picken, such a committed player.
george needs to learn and improve as you say. but i dont think we have a better replacement

George is consistent
Another magnificent 6 efficient disposals, 7 kicks 4 hb's now going at 54.5% from 87% game time.
Forward pressure? 1 tackle. Did fluke 2 goals though.
Where does he go to in games? Where does he run? What does he defend?

And some people are happy with his output. Heaven help us, no wonder we can't kick a score
