Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

Traditionally to make it as a small forward you need to have very good evasive skills and elite with your ball use and creativity. Castagna is quite a straight line player and his disposal skills are below par. You can get away with it as a gun midfielder extractor but not a forward. He's not a midfielder at all. A CHF? No he just doesn't take many marks (12 contested for the year, just 1 in his last 10 games) and is too small for the position. It's fine to say he can bring it to the ground, but he is one of the ones he needs to be bringing it down to and really how hard is it to fly for the ball as a forward and bring it to the ground every know and then when that's exactly what your direct opponent is also trying to do? So what are his strengths? His speed and his forwad defensive pressure. But that stat he's also been well down in the last few weeks. Hard to know what he then gives the side. I don't think we'll be seeing Butler and Castagna in the same side again.

I think you nailed it there.

Agreed. However, George is heavier, tougher and more aggressive than Butler, who on the other hand, has greater evasive skills and is a better kick. I'm wondering if Butler could eventually become a mid - like a similar type to Sidebum - although realise he might never reach that class. Not sure what lies ahead for JC now; he clearly dropped off as the year went on.

Not a huge fan but JC had a better year this year than last - winning covers a lot of issues. Should be replaceable, but need to replace his speed as well.

I don’t think either JC or DB can rotate through the midfield, which is why long term Higgins will displace one or the other. He seems to have a mid fielders instincts, unlike George and Butts. If Rioli could step up too we would be much better placed for mobility in the middle. With Dusty on one leg, Cotch who is middling pace wise, and Graham and Prestia in there last night who are dead slow, we were ripe for the taking.

Can play so well but when Butler was in the team they and Rioli seemed to spark off each other. Without Buts only Rioli did some good work. The same thing happens when Lambert is in the team Prestia seems to play better.
I don't pretend to know why

Had a very poor year seems he has been gifted games as his input has been vey poor. Don't want to see him as a forward again
Would like to see George get a chance in the midfield to see what he has to offer
kick just as many goals as last year, he is better with butts in the side.

Vulnerable now with Lynch coming & Butler ready to pounce.
I wonder whether Caddy will move up the field and play as our bullocking inside mid.
We'll still need three "Smalls" up forward. Martin will be our third tall.

Reckon he has run out of tricks. Teams know not to let him in behind them.

Second half of the year was poor. Doesn’t find a lot of the ball. And field kicking is pretty average. If Butler was fit, I’d have him in the starting 18 ahead of Castagna.

He’d be the one if he shopping at the trade table.

Trade high.
I’m with you on this, I can’t see much improvement in him, I’d also like to think we will have more highly skilled options in a similar role, Stengle may be gone, however I think he’ll be a better option with 2 key forwards to rove too, George has pretty much played the role of a second key forward, in saying that I also don’t mind keeping him

Seems lost without both Butler and Rioli by his side. Individually, he struggles. Bolton needs to get himself to a point that he demands Castagna's spot.

To my mind, the trio of Lynch, Riewoldt and Caddy give us what Kennedy, Darling and Le Cras give the Eagles. Just surround them with pace and pressure. Caddy stays.

That sounds fair enough, in that circumstance Castagna has to get moved IMO. Maybe other 3 forwards are Rioli, Butler and Baker.

Love George as we all know, but he really did drop away after a dynamic start.

Will need to return to form next year as the structure will change in the front half for sure.
