Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

Had a really good start to the season, 12 goals in the first 6 games. Seems those brownie points took him through the rest of the year. In the next 16 games he kicked just 14 goals. 7 in the last 11. Zero in the two finals. Personally I don't think he's good enough.

Has always looked his best and most valuable with Butler and Rioli next to him. That happened three times this season. Be better when he doesn’t have to play as a CHF.

He won't have to when we have Lynch - not that I think he plays that role anyway, Reiwoldt and Caddy do. There most likely won't be a spot for Castagna with Lynch in. With a re-structured forward line I really can't see all of Butler, Castagna, Rioli playing. Rioli's a lock so who out of the other two?

Same here. Assume he’s the one who makes way for Lynch.

Caddy makes way for Lynch

Forward line will be

Shedda Jack Lambert
Rioli Lynch Butler

Caddy? yeah nah. You don't go dropping a 46 goal a year player - 9th on the goal kicking list this year - leading of players under 190cm.

Agree with this, with Lynch we probably need more speed in our forward line so it has to be Caddy that makes way.

Speed doesn't count if George can't get near it

Yep, as another inside mid, where he belongs, smashing packs.

Caddy has a better goal kicking average per game than Lynch. No way Caddy is being moved out when Lynch arrives. He's too slow to play a permanent midfielder's role. Great for pinch-hitting.

Did those diminishing returns follow rapidly upon LeyseyDazy dubbing him our incomparable CHF?

Same for next year LeyseyDazy? I mean, if he's so incomparable?

It's not George I'm attacking, just some posters totally over-the-top rating of a young player who is no superstar but, as I and many others tried to point out, a work in progress. Not sure JC has the kicking skills to go into the midfield, although strength, speed and dynamism is there. Then again, Prestia is not that great a kick either.

I'm not sure, but a forward kicking 12 goals in 6 weeks is that rated as good these days? Bomber James kicked 6 in one game and Chris Pym kicked 4 against the reining premiers :hihi

At the start of the year KMac and George were our bottom two. Interesting how in the first third of the year George lifted himself out of it and KMac owned bottom player. Last third of the year the positions reversed.

Think George is back where he started, bottom two and on a knife edge for his spot. KMac isn't even bottom six for us any more (if you agree with Wallace).

Has that number 11 hurt him someway? What a *smile* disappointment.

Think he would have been the perfect match up for Langdon who seemed to do what he liked in their D50. I'm not even really sure who George was on last night as he was barely sighted at the ground.

Vulnerable now with Lynch coming & Butler ready to pounce.

As a fan of George I have to agree with this. His pressure is good but doubt he could play further up the ground. He doesn't have the touch to play in the middle nor the composure to play defence. Butler has more skills so adding Lynch may see George on the outer.

Traditionally to make it as a small forward you need to have very good evasive skills and elite with your ball use and creativity. Castagna is quite a straight line player and his disposal skills are below par. You can get away with it as a gun midfielder extractor but not a forward. He's not a midfielder at all. A CHF? No he just doesn't take many marks (12 contested for the year, just 1 in his last 10 games) and is too small for the position. It's fine to say he can bring it to the ground, but he is one of the ones he needs to be bringing it down to and really how hard is it to fly for the ball as a forward and bring it to the ground every know and then when that's exactly what your direct opponent is also trying to do? So what are his strengths? His speed and his forwad defensive pressure. But that stat he's also been well down in the last few weeks. Hard to know what he then gives the side. I don't think we'll be seeing Butler and Castagna in the same side again.
