Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

Yeah I don’t see the logic.

We just won a flag with the three amigos and they are all play better with their mates in the team. Some strange calls on this thread.

If you select a team and build a team around their statistical output vs witches hats, you’ll become witches hats yourselves in finals.

Role was redundant this week, that’s all.

Higgins comes in & it's basically Butler vs Castagna, I'm definitely on the side of Butler who has earned his stripes with a top 10 finish in the B&F. The CHF labeling simply doesn't correlate with reality, or at least it's being grossly overstated by the George fan club. Caddy is our second focal point & the stats back that up - goals, contested marks, conversion, leads etc. The team knows Caddy is an elite set shot so it's no surprise they look for him more than George. As for Higgins vs Castagna, the only category George is superior is contested marking, but 0.7 (and dropping) vs 0.4 isn't enough to compensate for the lack of midfield credentials. Higlet has embraced the gameplan & is as blue collar as anyone in the side. Goal kicking can also be dodgy but he's got a touch more x-factor about him.

Higlet is trotting through the mid rotations just fine.

Why does it need to be like for like?

We are surplus for back half and wing runners. Ellis or KMac out, Butler in.

Dunno why folks are determined to take away what works for us. Sorry bully but this Butler vs. Castagna talk is madness. They make each other better. In a team founded on pressure, that’s gold.

No way on earth George will get dropped.

You pretty much nailed the reason why Castagna is vulnerable, Ellis & KMac are doing their bit further up the ground, to keep the structures in place something has to give in the forward half. I wouldn't be writing off George just yet but he needs a lift, I'm usually hesitant to bring in a guy straight back in after injury but it will largely be dependent on form. If Ellis falters it will likely be Conca coming in, but at this stage Ellis has done everything asked of him. Next year will be the year we ship out KMac, Balta is the guy who adds something extra to the mix.

Fair enough Bully, I just think George is more integral to our brand than Ellis and KMac, whom I admire greatly but don’t see as critical.

our finals team last year contained Jack, Caddy, Townsend, Butler, George and Rioli.
Our team this week contained Jack, Caddy, George and Rioli.
We can certainly add Butler and keep the other 4. And will. we will drop a mid rotation if Butler comes back.

Higgins is playing as a mid.
Ellis played as a wing yesterday (as far as I could tell.) He is the vulnerable one.
If Conca and Butler both come back, I reckon Higgins could be very unlucky too.

Also pointing out Castagna's stats is missing a key point of his role. His job at times is too fly when Jack, or Caddy, is not there. he is not expected to mark the ball, but to make sure it hits the ground. and he does this very well.

He does compete in the air but that's insufficient reason to reduce our midfield rotations. Bottom line is he needs to perform strongly over the next fortnight. Ellis has been ok over the past few weeks, would be very stiff to be dropped.

it is going to be pretty hard to displace Short and Higgins from this team. That means at least two Premiership players have to be left out.

Townsend is likely to be one. The other is out of B Ellis and Castagna. Everyone else is safe.

Of course, who knows what injuries we will end up with?

This is a tough team to stay in.

Kmac would miss before Castagna

I'm not sure Butters will get back in. He would probably be there if he hadn't injured his ankle but I don't see them dropping Castagna to make way; Bobble has been pretty good the past two weeks and Higgins is locked in I reckon. Shorty is a lock also.

Kmac maybe? But not a like for like.

That's the difference between players on the border of selection. How integral their strengths are to our game plan.

We're too good for these last few positions to be decided by what they can't do, which bodes well for George and everything he can't do.

We want players like Castagna and Townsend to do well. When they aren't and when the stats are really low it begs the question could we get a bigger contribution from anybody else - and the answer is maybe but we have to impact our style to do so.

Townsend gets covered by Dusty/Caddy. But George gets to stay because Baker is too slow comparatively and Bolton is not ready so we keep hoping George's form improves and keep the game style which works for us regardless of the stats. Issue for George comes up next year - Lynch Looms Large as Tigers choose to accept a game style change.

Bash joined Shorty as the running overlap distributor off the back half, which pushed Ellis up to share a wing with KMac. All four were fine against Mould Coast.
We've got Higlet playing through mid and able to sneak forward with Dusty, Grigga, Lamblett, Presty, Shedda, Cotch, Graham so our mid forward rotations are fairly well covered as well.
Jaaack n Cads our main forwards with Cads sometimes rotating with the mids. They're usually surrounded by Sausage, Geezer n Georgie, but with the amount of possible mids sneaking forward, plus our wings n running backs joining in things can get over loaded up forward. Match committee is going to have massive problems trying to find room to fit everyone into the team this year if our injury list stays short n healthy. Might simply not be enough room for three amigos n just a terrific twosome this year.

Competing in the air alone wont get him a game, but he does bring more than that. he has kicked 23 goals for the year.

in regards to midfield rotations, we are playing with 2 more mids than we were last year. we can afford to drop one, for Butler (if he gets back.) especially when that one is likely to be BEllis.

Kmac or Bellis will be unlucky I reckon.

Two changes to the Premiership 22 will be Short and Higlet in for Townsend and Kmac/Bellis
