Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

Has always been unreliable in front of goal, even during our premiership campaign. Do I think he should be dropped? No. Do I think we could do better with some careful recruitment? Yes.

Bottom line is Castagna is a 10 possession, 1 goal, 1 behind, 1 GA player. Tackling is also below the average for his position. The thing that stands out most is the shots he's missing, it's not like he's continually shooting from the boundary line.

Now compare that output to Gresham, Ronke, Josh Thomas, Puopolo, Garlett etc.

Think we need to get over the fact he's a premiership player, I'll be eternally grateful for his contribution but he's not elite for his position and never will be.
All those players you mentioned play nothing like Castagna. You are comparing him with the wrong blokes. None of those guys compete in the air and have the ability to impact like George.

It's my view that his 0.8 contested marks a game is being overstated. If he was converting those opportunities then maybe there's a solid argument but he's not so it then becomes a question of focusing on his limitations. The benchmark in this role was obviously Cyril, probably a once in a decade player but that's what we should be aspiring towards. I also think that Caddy has had more impact in terms of competing in the air & that will be less of an issue if we manage to get Lynch. As I mentioned in an earlier post Isak Rankine would be an excellent upgrade on Castangna, it just becomes a question of how to muscle our way into the top 10.

Butchers nightmare last night was Georgie.
Almost impossible for any forward in the comp to miss five from five shots at goal plus completely flub another two or three opportunities, but Georgie managed it perfectly the poor bugger.
Not a chance that Captain Chaos gets dropped next week, worked his arse off n was a smidgin off a fantastic game n winning the game off his own boot. Ya don't sack players for that.

Thought just about the entire team was very average last night, mids got beat or often used it poorly, several other forwards were virtually invisible, the defense held well under seige for long periods last night. Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda beat up on GeeWhizz if we'd taken a couple of forward opportunities on a night where we played poorly. Grumpy last night but not overly bothered today, we've got much better performances than that one tucked away in the back pocket for when we need it.

The hype George gets from some here is pretty comical.
He’s got strengths but also quite a few weaknesses.
I honestly think Butler is the much better footballer.

Gee that was a hard statement

Bulter is 700k forward Castagna is a $700 forward.

Footy's a team game if I remember correctly. For those blaming Castagna, you may as well blame Cotch for losing the toss!!

As far as his kicking for goal is concerned, he clearly has a routine. What's missing is composure. Composure comes with experience. How many AFL games has he played? Forty odd?

Has one bad day in front of goal and it looks like the new whipping boy has been anointed.

No-one is denying he is getting more of the football and kudos to him for that - but because of that he is proportionately getting worse due to the greater number of shots going awry. He either has a come to Jesus moment and takes more time with his finishing or he is trade bait.

You are what you do and you are responsible for the outcomes achieved. If he can't change the football department has to respond.

Anyway TT, I'm sure he was a whipping boy last year as well.

Turn 2 of those behinds into goals and he's our hero.
Good effort to put himself in a scoring position 5 times.
That being said, needs a big off season at punt road oval practicing his kicking otherwise he will find himself in the magoos

Comparing a tall to a small there ToO. Butler doesn't replace George and vice versa.

Would shock me if Castagna had an AA year, would need to kick 40+ goals which at this stage seems a pipe dream. He certainly brings pressure & pace to the table but his finishing is generally poor. This is one position I'd be looking at upgrading with the next draft, a Jade Gresham type would be just what the doctor ordered.

AA squad discussion league. He kicked 26 goals last years and has 19 from 14 games this year.

As a 21 near 22 y.o kid he is already creating enough chances to be a 40 a year man.

Happy to have an internet beer that he does it. More than once to give you a chance Bully. ;D

Your getting too hung up on stats and not watching him enough ILO mate.

i.e. you are comparing his contested marking numbers to his overhead ability.

Surely you can see the folly in that compared to what he is instructed to do and he actually does overhead for our forward structure.

He won't be upgraded anytime soon unless Lynch comes in.

His poor conversion rate was always going to cost us a game. Hope last night is the only one for this year. Definitely a position we need to look to upgrade

Richmond coach Damien Hardwick has thrown his strong support behind Jason Castagna following the livewire Tiger forward’s attack of the goalkicking yips in last night’s narrow loss to Greater Western Sydney at Spotless Stadium.

Castagna finished with 0.5, but Hardwick was keen, post-match, to focus on the positives of his performance.

“We spoke to him at the end of the game. He'll probably be a little bit distraught about his zero (goals) five (behinds), but he gave himself ample opportunities to play the game and that’s what we want him to do,” Hardwick said.

“He'll go back to the drawing board, he’ll work on his process, and he'll get a better result next week.

“The pleasing thing for me is he kept lining up to take those shots on goal.

“He had a really good game tonight. The finishing wasn't there, but it'll be there next week.”

Castagna had 14 disposals, four inside-50s and 300 metres gained to go with those five shots at goal.

It better be Dimma.

He's solid overhead but hardly a focal point, call me old fashioned but if a forward struggles to nail goals from 30 metres out then he's on borrowed time. The fact he only touches the ball 10 times a match makes kicking even more critical. He will obviously stay in the short term but I'd be making that position a priority at the next draft.

I dont mind george , He has his worts but you know he will give 100%
He is asked to do a big job in competing for marks when he should be roving the packs and looking for the scraps falling to him from the big boys in the team
Set shots are not his thing and is alot more competent with snaps at goal similar to higgins

The Kaos he creates is brilliant and opposition backlines are worried about where he is and what he is going to do, Never will be your perfect footballer but at 21 i think by 24/25 he will iron alot of his issue's out and become a more consistent player. Stephen Milne was similar in his young days at Essendon
