Welcome to Tigers: Jason Castagna

He was a Rookie for a reason , He has done extremely well to get to where he is and is only 21 , Think he will continue to improve a fair bit

He is tracking almost exactly like Betts did at the same age , Could you ask for more ?

I remember Betts used to get knocks about the same things when he was 21

You dont give away players like Castagna for peanuts as they can bite you
Good comparison. Betts used to play that lead up role (still does mind you) that Castagna did for us this year. I'm a big fan of Georgie.

If he starts clunking his marks he'll kick 40 goals a season.

Yep, watching the 3 finals again, he was so close to taking a lot of marks near goal.

He is a very important player. Poise will come with experience.

Please. Castagna will never reach anywhere near Bett's capability. Castagna has nowhere near the evasive capabilities or the skill level and never will. Eddie Betts was playing in a rabble team at 21yo. Carlton finished 2nd last (we finished last) and every forward foray went to Fevola. Castagna is one of the ones under most pressure next year to keep his position.

Another non believer.

Not a non-believer. Just a realist. Does anyone argue that his disposal is very poor? That some of his decison-making leaves a bit to be desired. That he does fumble and drop marks he should take just a little too much. Yeah sure he can improve and he will need to. All I am saying is based on some of the talent we have vying for those forward positions that his position is one that there will be a lot of pressure to hold onto. And saying that he will never reach Betts level is not a knock, it's a reality check. Betts is the best small player I have seen in a long long time playing that forward role. Oozes talent. But he's getting on in age now. It's not easy, particularly in today's game, to keep to the highest standard as you age.

Let's not call him Eddie Betts but he does remind me of an athletic tall we once recruited from W.A at pick 18. Showed athletic traits early but was a bull at a gate and had zero composure. Now has developed into an adequate fullback for us.
George has a mind that needs to slow down. He has more time than he thinks as his first couple of steps are lightning and has great lateral movement. Once he learns composure, he will surprise a few. I'm going to come right out and say it. Better than Butler!!

Rance? I saw a lot in Rance from day 1. It wasn't until he received that really sickly head knock that he lost all confidence and it took him quite a long time to gain back the confidence and composure. Some forget he averaged 13.6 disposals and 80% disposal efficiency in his first year as a backman. Phenomenal really. Same as Astbury, he showed some fine form in his early days before injury and then struggled with many wanting to cut him loose. I don't see any of that raw natural ability in Castagna. But I agree with you, if he can gain better composure then that will help immensely. And I also agree with you that he is in the mix with Butler for that position. We also have Rioli, Bolton, Stengle, Caddy, Towsend and allowance for likes of Martin to spend time down forward into that mix. Imo we have an excess now of that position, which is quite ironic considering we tried multiple types in that role including Morris in the past because we didn't have anyone. I hope some understand now where I am coming from. Castagna could well and truly be a lock in for that forward pressure role at another club but is line ball at the Tigers imo.

This is where I sit also - really hope he keeps progressing but wouldn't surprise me if we have seen his best already - which with 26 odd goals this year is still ok and he was still a good player for us this year.

Comparison with Betts I can't see, not yet anyway - more Milne like if you want to project him into a great player - and the good thing is he does have time on his side.

Betts comparisons - mmmm - a young Stengle perhaps but that's another story.

George is better than Betts - he's a premiership player and now legend forever ;D

after 10 replay reviews, he could have taken 2-3 marks a player of his height simply should not get to. Has an incredible leap and whilst id prefer him front and center he is as much chance to take a forward contested mark as Griffo would.!! as stupid as that sounds! Some more games under his belt and some accurate goal kicking.... lots of upside in Georgie boy.
