Welcome to the Tiggers - Daniel Butler

Personally I don't know who gets my voice more ragged yelling and cursing at them on game day, Butler or Castagna? Castagna cost us against GWS last year, Butler will do the same if he is not careful. Both need to improve and I think Butler has a better chance because it would be tough for Castagna to do anything about his lousy skills at his age. Still, unlike Rioli, neither of them are untouchable come trade time. Butler just has to stop showboating!!!

I'm hearing you, i know Butler and Castagna are premiership players who were critical to us winning the flag, but crikey they frustrate me at times.
Happy enough if Butler gets selected in round one ahead of Baker, but he will need to tidy up a few parts of his game because i think Baker is, or will soon be a better player.

I have that same problem with Dusty, Cotch, Tross n Jaaack at times. Imperfect game, imperfect players, pointy football n brain farts the perfect combination to help frustrated fans vent for a couple of hours n clear the sinuses.

At one moment after he made another error, he was laughing to himself, vey funny when you look back on it. He must of been thinking wtf is going on, nothing was going right for him. Hopefully now some of the cobwebs have been dusted off.

If Butler is fit, we need him in the side. I prefer him to Castagna. If there is a choice between the 2 go for Butler. He is one of those players that struggles to come back from injury and fire immediately. Always takes a few games to find his feet and influence a game, similar to Sheds earlier in his career.

Bottom line with Butler is he is one of the vital cogs in our team that won a flag, like a few in the team it’s debatable how high his ranked to others in the same position throughout the competition in the position he plays, however when you’ve got players in the team like Martin, Cotchin, Rance, Reiwoldt , Lynch , Grimes who are all arguably in the top 3 in there positions ,it’s simply impossible to have the best of the best on each line and Butler though far from a Star in my eyes plays his role very well in this team.

Despite the angst was 5th best rated richmond player on player ratings. He takes the two gimme set shots instead of show boating and he is probably second best on ground.

That's why I never rely on rankings or stats.
Fifth best my a$$.
Martin, Cotchin, Higgins, Graham, Prestia, Rance, Riewoldt, Broad, Lambert for starters

Yeah nah. Your first five are the ones above or equal to Butler on rankings (Graham equal 5th on 85 ).

I thought Broad was good. Rancey and Jack below par. Lambert was pretty woeful with the ball.

Nonetheless I reckon if a small forward made nine tackles and kicked 2 goals (should have been 4) he has at least met expectations.

Butler is vastly underappreciiated. When he hits a contest at full speed it actually draws players back. Check out Higgo's snap goal when Butler zooms through trying to kick off the ground at full speed. Higgo gets that vital time and space to snap.

Also check out how clean he is with the gather and speed shown to kick his two goals. Only Rioli is in that ball park for us and even then he is not as quick as Dan.

He slows so many exits out of defence and creates so many opportunities with his pressure. I like Baker but he is miles off what Dan provides in a defensive sense.

Agreed

Rance , Lambert were very ordinary and butler was better but things just didnt click for him and could have been the star of the game had he kicked 4 goals.

Fact remains we need 3 small's in the foward line apart from Higgins & Edwards who are now more rotating mids

Butler , Rioli , Castagna , Baker we need to play 3 out of the 4 to maintain our foward line pressure and there are not too many defences that can cover all 3
Have a look at the Pies v Blues game today and the players that kicked the goals for the pies were mainly the smalls

On that logic I would argue that Jack R was almost BOG. Missed an easy set shot from 30m which he should have kicked and then Butler played on and kicked a goal when jack was awarded a free 30m out.
Kicks those goals and he has 5. Not a bad effort for a FF.
I also reckon you're being harsh on Rance. Hope you're not downgrading him because of that woeful decision payed against him for a great around the body spoil on Roughhead where he hit 100% ball or for that crap 30m kick straight to the opposition as you'd then have to make allowances for Butlers terrible mistakes also?

That Rance spoil was brilliant and the goons on TV just ignored it.

Re Jack 8 possessions 3 goals 1. Butler 11 posessions 2 goals 2. Tackles Butler NINE Riewoldt 2.

Butler's work is a bit like Shed's. It is often missed. When you see a skewed oppo kick or missed handball it's often because of a run from behind or the side or front by Butler. Often not a tackle but actual or inferred pressure.

I am a Butler fan because he is one of very few players who can use their speed effectively. He knows where and when to put on the afterburners. Plus he has some very handy goal sense. That's gold.

You are nailing this Lamb.

People have short memories. After his injury last year you could straight away see the impact it had on the team. Forward pressure reduced and as a result teams scored more heavily from their back half.

He is a smart payer Dan. And Rioli and Castagna are even better with him in the team.

Butlers tackling and pressure is fantastic, he lets himself down when gets possession with poor decision making or by fumbling the ball.

Spot on re Butler!

Dan came 8th in the B & F in a premiership year. Was in the top 10 at the time he got injured last year and is ranked Richmond's 12th best player on AFL ratings despite missing the last half of the season last year. He is not just making up the numbers.

Agree. If he could just cut out these brainfades though and I reckon he could be one of the best smalls in the comp. He could easily kick 40-50 goals a year if he sorted those out. Could have easily kicked 5 against the hawks.
