Welcome to the Tigers - Daniel Rioli

No draft expert but thank Christ this a deep drfat. Pundits say not much diference between top 15 and even top 20. Last year it tailed away after 10 or so
One thing we need to consider is personality type. We need to recruit brash and confident leaders who can put a stamp on the group. Think of all the best forwards. They all had tickets on themselves with the inner confidence to take charge in big moments.

if they want him they can pay him
I think people dont get the salary cap you have to pay 90% of it minimum so paying bolton and rioli is a given fact we will be doing! One it allows us to pay the 90% required and two it gets us better draft capital by selling the cap space to them. Three then when we so stop paying them we can attack free agency with even more cap space than the actually 90% because those 2 are already playing for other clubs so in the 2 or 3 years when we stop paying them we are paying only 80% of the cap

As good as Dan is..very good..pick 5 can get us a 12 year high quality mid.
That is better than what Dan has to offer.
ie..Lalor or Smith or Langford or Reid.
pretty much guaranteed.

Add that to FOS or Draper...our rebuild is kick started immediately.
We ought to be studying what the teams who frequently make finals e.g. Sydney do when they have a big changeover of players. For example how do they keep developing young players regardless of where they are picked in the draft to quickly play a role really well, it's always hard to imagine the counterfactual but many of the young Sydney players might do a lot worse in their career if they were developed in a different system.

This recent era is the first time we have had success in a long time we shouldn't be so quick to trade too many players out. A lot of the remaining premiership players who can help develop new young players get the best out of themselves, win finals etc, such as Broad, Nankervis and Prestia are 30 or over now so will only be around a few more years and might be gone the next time the season is on the line and we need all the on field leadership we can get in order to teach all the lessons that can't be taught on the whiteboard.

The players we might earmark to fit this roles are Balta, Rioli, Baker, Short and perhaps Graham but there are some mixed feelings on him. Even Short is getting towards 30 ( he will be 29 in January). If we trade out too many of these players, then when it matters in a few years Balta might be the only premiership player left to pass on all the hard earned knowledge..

Lalor or Smith or Langford or Reid all have a lot of potential but we shouldn't trade away out ability to develop the potential of the players we do end up picking in order to pursue them as well.

Yep. Just like it's taken footy fans decades to understand the sell strategy (ie when you're going to be stuck at the bottom regardless and not selectively doing so just slows your re build), so too is the "pay salary" strategy and the value that comes with doing it, also taking a long time to accept.

"Why the *** would we pay anyone's salary ? No way !"

As you know, 101 stuff that's been going on in overseas sports for 40 plus years.

Problem is we are dead last..18th...with Dan,Shai, Jack and Liam playing most of this year..and the 3 before.
Having them is nice, they are all club champs but we are going down fast .
We are in fact now horrible and unwatcheable. Really dreadful.
We are rubbish right now.

If we keep these champs and only draft 2 players a year..hopefully good ones...it will take a decade or more till we climb the ladder...worse with Tassie coming in.

So...stay the course and remain poor for at least a decade...likely longer.

Or...throw everything at the chance...once in a generation...to make a recovery quickly. Zero guarantee...but if you look at the prospect of 12 to 15 quality young players..maybe with the odd trade like Cadman..added to Balta Gibcus Brown Taranto Mc Auliffe Hopper R Smith Campbell ..then we have a decent side in 4 years. Yes...at least 4 years.

No guarantee...but...we might get a Dusty <Lalor> ,a Cotch <FOS> a JR < Shanahan > ,an Edwards < Reid> and a Lambert
< Urqart> plus a big FF <Simms>...in this single draft.

Next year..a Prestia < pick 1> and a Rance < pick 19 > .
Add 2 more top picks in 2026 and 2 more in 2027. .thats easily a dozen or more..maybe champions of our next sucessful cycle.

To me it is a no brainer...go hard and go now. The alternative is aweful.

Sydney is not a good example as they have picked up some absolute talent cheaply through their academy.

You are right, there are no guarantees, just look at lolnorf (getting rid of club champions too quickly or the suns (packed to the rafters with first round talent).

The dawks, bloose, maybe better case studies perhaps but it takes luck (eg Cripps falling to the blues)

Your straight to the point comments are better and I will learn from that.

Yep Sydney is a bad example in terms of academy advantage. But their culture and player development is to be admired. Both things are true.

There is no one thing that can explain success. With the president, CEO and generational talent retiring/moving on. You don't know what you've got til it's gone.

If you get luck like Cripps falling to your pick, you need the system ready to go to build a team around that player.

Cant count on luck to succeed.
You must have access to the best and take them. This is the draft and next year will be a bonus.
There is a Cotchin Martin JR and others in this draft. We must get them before others do or we will be poor for years.

Pick 5 can also give u will Phillips or the Essendon guy that apparently can’t kick.

Yep..no guarantee..but this draft is full of quality to pick 20 plus.
Pick 5 is Lalor...a Dusty- De Goey type...or Smith...a L Neale..x2 Brownlows...or Reid...Edwards plus..or Langford...Pendlebury.
Cant see any downside there.
Thats after pick 1 and multiple other picks of quality.
No brainer.
Actually...its exciting!!!

You are absolutely correct in everything you say!

But there is something pretty special about Baker and Rioli in particular that represents the tiger spirit.

Imagine if you were an 11 year old in 2017, dreaming of one day playing in an AFL grand final looking for a role model to emulate to one day get drafted.

What better role model than the kid with 'run, chase, tackle, goal' written on some tape on his wrist.
If you play your role and work hard then anything is possible.

Imagine how stoked you are going to be 7 years later training with him. It is absolutely going to make you excited to come in everyday.
Especially if he is also giving 110 percent even when we are still bottom of the ladder and 10 goals down for the first few years of your career, telling you to trust the process.

Now imagine yourself and 10 or 11 others who have been in the system a few years playing against the bloos in your first final.

Here is this great man you've admired and respected now more than half your, life pointing where to go, and yelling 'run, chase, tackle, goal' and that's all you can hear over the raw of 90,000.
