Welcome to the Tigers - Daniel Rioli

I thought he went OK. He was a reliable link in a number of score involvements IIRC. Sold a nice piece of candy and centred a very nice ball out on the left flank at one stage, but I didn’t see a lot of his eye-catching speed on the night.

The Shep game looked like he was in for a huge year, the last 2 games he just looks a tad switched off to me, as bigger fan as I am for him to go onto a wing, playing deep at Lynch’s feet maybe a good option at this point.

Happy to see him spend a bit of time on the wing, however he along with the other small fwds are absolutely critical in locking the ball in our fwd half so needs to spend most of his time down there imo.

What did we think about Dan's opening game?
Was ok but personally thought he was a lot less dynamic than I expected.
Seemed a step slower & had trouble handling the footy cleanly (perhaps due to the humidity).
Not so much of his customary pressure either.
Hopefully just getting the cobwebs out cause we need him to play better vs the Pies.
17p
4 i50
2 goal assist
9 score involvements
2 tackles
Pretty ok game , if he can build on this I’d be delighted

Had the Crosby’s on. If he had real boots on he would’ve been alight.
He tried his usually magic but slipped over too many times

Going to sound strange but just felt like he always got that bad bounce and never got the run of the green so to speak

just didnt happen for him last thursday night

Did you hear that the AFL have actually banned the use of long stops! True story. Was reported by commentators during one of the games on the weekend.
The mind boggles.

Gary Lyon said it, and Paul Roos didn’t believe him. During the Port/Melb game.
I couldn’t believe it

Further away from goal the less Ilike him. Midfielders picking up kicks defensive side of centre are dime a dozen.. Don't need Dan doing that.

I can see your point, 22nd. But the thing about Dan is he doesn't get quite as much ball as we might have hoped. And one of the standard moves to get a player more involved is to play hime behind the ball. There have been a thousand failures of the plan but Jason Akermanis is the success story we remember.

It almost certainly won't happen this year but it's a fringe view with classical bases. It's one I share with a few other PRE lunatics.

Is Jayden Short a good kick? Daniel Rioli is. And thta's without the luxury of laying the ball of with a minute to spare. And there has never been a small forward Daniel Rioli couldn't catch. And even hurt.

Then there's the wear and tear. Small backs get it a lot easier than small forwards do. Daniel had any injuries? Totally due to playing forward in that case.

It is a great luxury in any time, and even more so in this time of eighteen teams and diluted talent pools, to have a glamour like Daniel Rioli running off your backline. Hey - Alex Rance is far too classy for the backline.

If we try Rioli in the backline I will be very happy.

Further to all of this. I think many if us think Daniel Rioli has another gear. And some believe that he'll find it behind the ball. And maybe we see backline lessons as a an accelerant here. A miracle cure. When maybe evolution is the right way forward. Revolution, for me, with Dinsdale Rioli.

Fair point. looked like he was wearing ice skates at times.

Dan on Elliot? I'd pay to see that

Rioli is a specialist at hunting down the running defenders. Watch him roam our forward line and sneak up on unsuspecting opponents trying to run the ball out. He creeps up, plays the angles and cuts off escape routes. This is where his value lies. Don't care if he gets 10 possies per game, he makes defenders very nervous.
