Welcome to the Tigers - Daniel Rioli

Sorely missed on Thursday night. His pressure and class in the forward line is so important to how we want to play.

At the kids clinic at Punt Road today he said he was hoping to play round 9-10. That seemed out longer than I had heard previously

We need to make sure we get him right and not rush it like Melbourne & Viney.
I said originally that I wouldn't be surprised if it was after the bye. Looks like it's heading that way.

Yeah, definitely taking longer than the club and we expected, thought it might be timely to revisit Neil Balme's December's assessment and hoped timeline in the following AGE article:

In some respects the time line has blown out but then they are consistent in their message saying they will be cautious and give him all the time he needs.

If we get him back 100% we have probably dodged a bullet I reckon.

**Note: Injury says ligament damage and broken bones and plates plural.

Daniel Rioli likely to miss round one of Richmond Tigers' 2018 AFL season
By Anthony ColangeloUpdated7 December 2017 — 5:26pmfirst published at 4:47pm

Richmond premiership star Daniel Rioli will likely miss round one of the 2018 season as the club takes a "cautious" approach to helping the speedster recover from the "significant injury" he suffered in the 2017 grand final.
Rioli broke his foot in the final term of the Tigers' premiership win over Adelaide and spent most of the off-season in a moon boot after having surgery.

The 20-year-old only got out of his moon boot earlier this week. He will need to go under the knife again after Christmas to have metal plates removed from his foot, according to Richmond's general manager of football Neil Balme.
"We think he will play most of the year but he probably won't play round one would be our gut feel, but he isn't out of the question there just yet," Balme said.

"The fact that it's a significant injury we will be relatively cautious with it but in a high performance environment he will be pushing as hard as he can to get back as quick as he can. We won't take any risks on it.
"We are pleased with the way he is going ... We were quite happy with the flexibility, quite often it stiffens up so it wasn't it bad shape."
Rioli only made a fleeting appearance at training this week and the Tigers are happy to allow Rioli longer to recover if necessary given how bad the injury is. They have the luxury of being flush with small forwards, which means there is no great urgency about his return.
Rioli will soon begin running in an "AlterG" or zero-gravity running machine and his and the club's previously stated target of unassisted running by early 2018 remains in place, however moving into contact or game-running situations that early remains less likely.
Rioli was on crutches for Richmond's premiership celebrations.

Balme said there had been some damage to the ligaments underneath Rioli's broken bones, however this was not too significant and certainly not as bad as the damage done to Dane Swan at the start of 2016, an injury the ended the Collingwood star's career.
Balme was Collingwood's football boss at the time and saw how Swan's foot was decimated by the injury.
He said there were no concerns over Rioli's future.
"They're pretty confident [the medical staff] that ... if it heals properly it should be back to square one [for Rioli]."
Rioli was integral to the Tigers 2017 success thanks to his high-pressure game in the forward line. He played every match for the season and kicked four goals in Richmond's preliminary final win over GWS.
Meanwhile, Balme said concussion-prone forward Ben Griffiths was progressing well. Griffiths has suffered numerous concessions over the past four years, the last coming in 2017 round two against Collingwood at the MCG.
That came in April with Griffiths then returning to football, in the VFL, in July.
The club is also happy with the progress and round one fitness chances of Dion Prestia (ankle), Oleg Markov (shoulder), Jayden Short (shoulder) and David Astbury (shoulder). The quartet underwent surgery after the 2017 season.

The club has not been honest in my opinion , dont let the facts get in the way of behind these 4 walls , recon if he had done a knee he would be back sooner .....

If it is mid season that's a 9 month injury..... To me puts its severity in perspective, rather than miss the first few games of the new season. Not to be trifled with.

It's only when Daniel can go flat out that you could give him 3_4 weeks of intensive pre season, that would be why it's round 9-10.

More serious than first suggested. The bone would be under immese stress from tne ligaments.

The recent commentary was that he would return rounds 4/5, that is probably starting out with a quarter or 2 in the vfl and building up over a month to get back into the seniors in rounds 9/10. He missed all the match simulation the other players had preseason so he needs to play catch up in the vfl. Makes sense.

Im pretty sure i posted either in december or january that it would be extremely unlikely that we will see Daniel Rioli in the seniors before the Bye

Pretty sure he is still 4-5 weeks away from playing at any level and wouldnt surprise me if he is eased through the vfl just playing increased minute over 2-3 games

Not fussed how long it takes just get the kid right

He has been missed. His pressure and skills around goal are what we need back urgently.

The last couple of weeks have shown how valuable he is to our club. Take the necessary time he needs to heal properly. He's a 200 game player for us, if we look after him.
