Welcome to the Tigers - Connor Menadue

Thought the VFL team did pretty well against Casey who are top of the ladder.

What I did see was a team that played terribly for parts of each quarter but then really turned it on for the rest of the quarter.

And that's the exact problem.
At that level of sport (ie second best in the nation) one would expect a consistent performance in method, ability and purpose.
As you say, they really turned it on but that only emphasises the variation.
The poor disposals, lack of support and failure to present and defend points to serious mental failures that would not be accepted at a local level.

yeah but they play the same as the seniors. Backwards sideways and slow play. Always put the player under pressure with he handball.
And like in most cases that game plan goes out the window in the last quarter when it got tight and they then played to win by playing fast attacking footy.

He started like an absolute house on fire but did fade out of the contest which was diappointing.
Still there are some fantastic signs for this kid...

They said after the game that he essentially had no opponent in the first quarter as Mitchell was coming in off the wing to pick up Cotchin leaving Menadue free. Port corrected at quarter time and Mitchell was starting in. Not going to watch the replay to check if this is the case.

Re: Welcome to the Tiggers - Connor Menadue

Menadue is just a kid of skin and bone but has a footballing brain that is body has to catch up to. At least he is getting game time and hopefully in time will be a valued team member. Certainly nowhere near the worst of our group on the park.

Re: Welcome to the Tiggers - Connor Menadue

He and Mrakov are similar types of wingman and after another pre season each , they may be able to have some real impact next season

Watching the VFL team side playing. What strikes you is that they are NOT a team.
Went to Wiki to look up the definitions of "team" compared to "group".
Stunning how it stands out that we do not have teams at Richmond.

Wiki:
"A team is a group of people or other animals linked in a common purpose. Human teams are especially appropriate for conducting tasks that are high in complexity and have many interdependent subtasks.[citation needed]

A group does not necessarily constitute a team. Teams normally have members with complementary skills and generate synergy through a coordinated effort which allows each member to maximize their strengths and minimize their weaknesses. Naresh Jain (2009) claims:

Team members need to learn how to help one another, help other team members realize their true potential, and create an environment that allows everyone to go beyond his or her limitations. Teams can be broken down into from a huge team or one big group of people, even if these smaller secondary teams are temporary.[1]

Astounding that the board and staff like Richardson or Gale cannot see something that seems really obvious from outside.
Watching the VFL it is obvious that they do not have a common purpose but an individual aim.
as you say, just go Hardwick. Take McCrae and the other dummies with you.

I'd have agreed a few weeks ago, Redan. On the clear lack of cohesion in the Magoos. But I think McRae is starting to get on top of this. He is finally getting them to gel. Our Magoos looked bloody good at times today. Against slick and experienced opposition. It's coming together.

If anything Hardwick h8trs will be arguing for McRae to get the top job if he keeps improving performance like that.

Menadue profited from his return to the seconds. Maybe because of the tutelage.

Pity that ball didn't sit up for him running into goal. Had another good game. Just needs another 15kg

Fully agree and have always been keen on Connor, but really should have nailed that goal. Needed to tap the ball up into the air first time in order to catch it, not knock it ahead of him on a wet surface. Then still had a split-second to dob it with a really fast dribble-kick hard left, but actually propped and was caught. Thought he was clear? What?

Watch how Eddie does it; a certainty with him. Needs to be more aware.

Has absolutely no fear. Relishes the contest. Star in the making and after Vlossy has had a turn could even be a captain of the club.
On another note - I went over to the game on Friday night... Boy we are truly a soft rudderless mess. Just nothing there as a collective.
So so disappointing. I've seen just about every game for the last 38 years and slowly but ever so surely they have drained my enthusiasm. Just go Hardwick, please just go. And whoever comes in - please please give me back my team.
I certainly can sympathise but, except for the last 3 years, you do realise we have been pretty *smile* for the last 35 years?

Re: Welcome to the Tiggers - Connor Menadue

I'm not quite sure where you're coming from Tigerflag....
Yes I fully 'realise' that we have been mostly awful for the last 3 decades.

Re: Welcome to the Tiggers - Connor Menadue

Can't wait for him to put on some kg's, he'll be able to break a few more tackles. He is going to be a very good player for us, along with Short, Rioli and Castagna.

Re: Welcome to the Tiggers - Connor Menadue

The thing that excited me most about Menadue in his junior highlights was him tucking the ball under his arm and running, taking on opponents taking the game on. How many times has he done this so far in his career? None. Hardwick and his game plan is is killing his flair and his strengths.

Re: Welcome to the Tiggers - Connor Menadue

Harry have a look at some video mate if he does anything he accelerates out of the contest wherever possible, does a huge amount of running of the ball, this kid is going to be great.

Re: Welcome to the Tiggers - Connor Menadue

Please bring in some coaches, including strength and conditioning, who will develop this kid....could be a gem.
Same could have been said of Vlaustin and C. Ellis but current coaches seem to stagnate any flair they may possess.

Or maybe in his junior years he was running away from other junior footballers, whereas now he is having to do it against experienced, mature AFL players with a few pre seasons behind them ;)

Re: Welcome to the Tiggers - Connor Menadue

Seems the club have at least re contracted the right type this time. Young up n comer with plenty of talent who simply needs time to grow a physique. Rather than middle aged semi skilled nuffer who fills a hole sometimes.
Like the way Mendoo plays footy.
