Welcome to Richmond Chris Yarran

Touché Tigertim.

Wasn't it said that Dusty said, after they went out ( with a group or themselves ) somewhere that Dusty advised them against it , even though he later wanted to go to WA?

Not sure if my memory is right????

That's right. The story was that he stayed at Dusty's place on a trip to Melbourne to have a look at the club. He slipped away and spent the night on the town returning in the morning. The report was that he was way too wild and crazy for our mild mannered Dusty and he recommended we have nothing to do with him.

Can we just stop picking up ice addicts ffs.

Club needs to hire someone with their finger on the pulse like Huggy Bear who used to get it sorted for Starsky and Hutch back in the day

It's an addiction issue, not specifically a drug issue. If he couldn't control his gambling, he shouldn't have been expected to control his drug use. Severe gambling perhaps is the visible factor that should be taken more seriously.

I see Balme has come out today and said that Richmond knew the go with Yarran before recruiting him. This makes me livid.

TIGERS KNEW YARRAN HAD PROBLEMS: BALME

RICHMOND recruited Chris Yarran at the end of 2015 despite knowing “a reasonable amount” about his off field issues, says Tiger footy boss Neil Balme.

Yarran revealed in a video posted to Youtube that he had a crippling ice addiction — one that ultimately ruined his career and prompted a return to Western Australia.

Balme told SEN that Richmond were aware Yarran had off field issues when they recruited him to the club on a three-year deal.

“We did know a reasonable amount about it,” Balme said.

“But a really positive thing is that it seems like he is a much better place.”

Richmond gave up Pick 19 in the trade for Yarran, which Carlton used to secure speedy midfielder David Cunningham.

Cunningham won the Rising Star nomination in Round 12, booting two goals in Carlton’s shock upset win over GWS.

Yarran never played a game for Richmond, with a combination of physical and mental health issues preventing him from getting on the park.
The 26-year-old was released from his contract with Richmond in November 2016, but Balme refuted suggestions the club hadn’t done enough to help the forward.

“We didn’t offload him. He couldn’t play and couldn’t train, so we came to an agreement,” Balme said.

“Obviously we were aware of it (his issues), because he would have told us because one of the team and he wanted to get better and he wanted us to help him and the club worked very hard to do it.

“But he wasn’t able then train and do the work he had to do to give himself a chance to play, in his judgment.

“We gave him every chance to do that and I think we’ve helped him enormously and I hope that we are part of the fact that he is now able to say that I’m back on track and I’m trying to get myself back into gear.”

My god we're dumb. I can't believe this is true!

I hope that: if he does resolve his addiction, and the factors that lead him to indulge in meth; and he starts playing scintillating WAGL footy, that he remembers the support we gave him, and comes back to play his footy for us.

Yeah dumb, but all clubs can be dumb. Fev, Mitch Clarke, Chris Mayne, maybe Jaeger O'Meara, all for different reasons dumb or high risk or both, that's just off the top of my head. It happens.

Are you kidding?? His body's wasted and has zero chance to play AFL level again.

Okay, we took a gamble on a high-risk / high-reward recruit. Fine.

But Pick 19 doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

1. It was a one horse race
2. For an ice addict
3. With a 250k gambling debt
4. In terrible form and terrible condition
5. One year away from free agency

Just... How..?

I'd say Yarran was a more serious case than those. Freo could be dumb but Bennell's playing now (against us :p).

Yep, it just does not make sense. What am I missing?

........

Balme did not say we knew he used drugs. Yarran has not said he used drugs before we recruited him (as far as i have seen.)
Balme said we knew he had off-field issues. we have threads full of posters saying they dont care what people do off field, and that we shouldnt worry about character etc.
we took a risk on a guy who had issues (maybe not drug issues at that point) and we got burnt.

Maybe, I'd argue Mayne was dumber, but that is beside the point. Point is, we aren't the only ones who make dumb and/or high risk deals.

“We did know a reasonable amount about it,” Balme said. What reasonable amount? Surely he would've been questioned and investigated thoroughly....or not.

So you are saying we didn't know he was using drugs? It sure sounded like we knew what his issues were in that story. If not, Carlton have a bit to answer for!

Why? It's not Carlton's job to do our due diligence. Additionally I understood clubs aren't allowed to divulge drug related issues of their players.

Why? Because I hate them that's why. They knew and screwed pick 19 from us. I am more annoyed at our recruiters though for not finding it out and then having the ammunition to offer them pick 50!
