Welcome to Richmond Chris Yarran

Why? It's not Carlton's job to do our due diligence. Additionally I understood clubs aren't allowed to divulge drug related issues of their players.

Step 1. Start
Step 2. go to Step 3
Step 3. End

still reckon getting Dusty to screen Bennell by hitting the town with him was the best due diligence ever.

Okay, we took a gamble on a high-risk / high-reward recruit. Fine.

But Pick 19 doesn't make any sense whatsoever.

1. It was a one horse race
2. For an ice addict
3. With a 250k gambling debt
4. In terrible form and terrible condition
5. One year away from free agency

Just... How..?

Pure incompetence.

Maybe we can pay him as our DDO (Due Diligence Officer) and build his pay into the upped offer of $1.5m?

Cost of the trade aside, there is a silver lining.

While Carlton still treat their players like robots, we have built a culture of loyalty and our whole team is thriving in our "we care about you" environment right now.

We're one win off top 2; they're bottom 2.

Neither club will win the war on talent alone (GWS will win if talent is the only factor) - but we CAN win the war with a superior culture and better team spirit. So Richmond is a club that cares for players almost to the detriment of the club. Looking at the big picture, such a flaw is dwarfed by the benefits of showing compassion and care to create a club culture with spirit and grit. Water the seeds we have; they will grow.

At the end of the day, Aussie Rules is not a sport determined by pure talent to the same extent as basketball or soccer. Aussie Rules has more players on the ground, more randomness, a more unpredictable bounce of the ball, and due to the demand on the body, nobody is ever truly at 100%. If ever there was a sport where spirit wins premierships ahead of talent, it's this one.

We lose out on the talent of someone like Yarran, but what we've lost in pure talent we've gained in double from the players on the list right now. And a team of 30-40 players in a club that actually cares about them will always be better than a team of 30-40 robots with 1 extra draft pick.

We lost a battle? Then win the war.

There. Silver lining. 8-

"our whole team is thriving in our "we care about you" environment right now." How come we didn't thrive last year?

What a crap statement, we are thriving this season because Blake has brought a decent game plan with him.

Balme did not say we knew he used drugs. Yarran has not said he used drugs before we recruited him (as far as i have seen.)
Balme said we knew he had off-field issues. we have threads full of posters saying they dont care what people do off field, and that we shouldnt worry about character etc.
we took a risk on a guy who had issues (maybe not drug issues at that point) and we got burnt.

Are you saying being recruited by Richmond turned him to drugs?

I still can't get my head around Carlton holding out for a better deal.

Well put 123. Hard to defend the club at all on this issue.

“We did know a reasonable amount about it,” Balme said. What reasonable amount? Surely he would've been questioned and investigated thoroughly....or not.

He's answered the question without answering it. Balme's a past master at that.

I'm sorry guys but a classic case of amateur decsions by our club... pick 19
A premium pick... does the word Medical mean anything???
Any transfer of worth needs to be vetted by a full blown medical.

we should sue the prick for non performance of contract......we will win because GOD will pay!
On top that Blair Hartley still has a job.
He was warned Yarran has issues and he still parted with 19

Whichever way I look at this I can only believe there was a great deal of subterfuge going on with Carlton. No doubt Carlton bluffed then rogered Richmond ... and worst of all, Richmond, for whatever reasons, allowed itself to get screwed over royally.
This proven to be a shameful exercise on a number of levels by a number of individuals.
I hope the Tigers hammer Carlton every time we face them over the next ten seasons. That club has a lot to answer for ... as do some down at RFC.
