Welcome Sam Banks

not writing him off Sin,

but rather than the number of bad games, its more the nature of the bad game that I judge.

much like umpiring decisions, its so much the how many are paid, as where they are paid.

its what makes Seth Campbells moment so exciting - the nature of the moments.

we were down and out, all at sea, bereft,

when the kid had his moment.

ive watched Sam a few times at VFL level, and he's always struck me as a bit confused.

he can still overcome that,

but I reckon he should have by now.

we are gonna turn over at least 50 footballers between now and when we are competitive (Top 4) again I reckon.

I reckon im gonna be looking at 'em through a bit of a different lens

and I make sincere apologies for that
I have seen moments from young Sam as well. A few stellar kicks, some very nice work off half back late last year, a very nice goal in the Port game.

It’s round zero FFS. We are going to try plenty of young fells during the year. Let’s support them all.

I like him, there is something about him, the way he runs and delivers the ball.

I really find it strange how willing people are to write off our young players. I’m more concerned about grimes and Prestia + the *smile* weak effort by a few other senior players. Well paid, experienced, seasoned. The pile on banks and young in particular is just too easy and in poor taste IMO.

With young players, sometimes all you need to see is a moment to realise they have something.
Seth Cambell in a practice game early last year an example. Stepped around 3 players and delivered a pin point pass. I knew from that point that the kid had something special.
Saw the same thing with McCauliffe on the weekend. Did some things that announced him as a real player.
Judson Clarke has had moments in games. Ditto Sonsie.
They all need development and hard work. And some luck.
I’m yet to see anything from Banks to tell me he has that something special to stand out from the crowd.
I’m thinking role player at best.

I remember when some people on here were bagging out a young Alex Rance.

Now he may have been an outlier, but Hawthorn for one club tried hard to get him during his early struggles.

You get them in, then you back them in. Simple.

If they aren’t good enough, so be it, but you need to give them plenty of time.

The best way to learn about wine is drinking.

The more I drink at the footy, the more great opinions about players I have.
Something tells me I’m not alone on this

It is actually quite funny in a way. Everytime the team has a bad game about 15 players get written off :ROFLMAO:

Yes you are correct

Sam wont be the super star AFL player and will be a role player and thats ok as the team doesnt need 30 super stars
just 5-6-7 maybe 8

The remainder just need to be Very good reliable role players and thats all we need from Banks

At $13 for a can of Balter last night, I learned not to buy beer at the footy.

$13! Go *smile* yourselves.

Why ? Is that fair to other blokes pushing up? Banks is not getting the ball, and is not physical
Because I think he can play and not sure Pickett and KMac are going to be part of our next flag .

I’d be moving more out then in at this point

Here’s hoping. I’m obviously not as convinced as you

His work rate was still there late in the game. Very noticeable in a few sequences both as we tried to transition forward and as he got back to help spoil a ball through for a behind. His physicality and knowing when to go and when to stay out needs work, but his two way running is there. There's one sequence about the 15 min mark or so where one moment he's deep in defense (no more than 20 meters from our defensive goal) and then as the ball is moved swiftly upfield he is available the wing for the overlap handball. That's workrate.

On other threads we're bemoaning a few players for standing, walking and not defending. Banks did the running required.

If we're to become a 2 way running team with the required workrate then Sam gets a few weeks to work on physicality and learning/knowing when to go and when to hold. And on this not of knowing when to go and when to hold just a season ago (so 30-odd games into his career) Jack Ross was struggling with this and getting caught spectating or in no man's land so I'm cutting Sam a little slack in that area.

I tend to agree with you, whether or not he plays on Thursday I'm not sure, depends on mix I think of who we play, but I don't seem him as the complete bust others do. He's never going to be a superstar player of the comp, but I think he can definitely develop into a good role player on the wing. He's going to be different to our wings through our flags, he's more your Ellis (who was also incessantly bagged on here) than your Kmac type.
