Welcome Liam Baker

Then don't play him.
Smiling when we are 6 goals down got me so angry.
If he isn't invested. Put time into someone who is.
Yze hasn't got the balls.
Beveridge would.
What a load of crap? Because a poster surmises it from a game where the whole side was pathetic?

Not invested?

You've stooped to new levels of stupidity.

Butler's been hopeless last couple of years. Watched him plenty. We would have been stuck with yet another average small forward. Higgins is the one kicking ass.

To be fair, Butler's style of footy isn't suited to Lyon-Ball. If he was looking to leave this year, we will have the pics to bring him back. Noah Cumberland isn't the answer

I reckon Butler would fit in well at Tigerland under Ouzo,,The small forward position under Dimma was taxing .

Unwritten football lore, if your out of contract star hasn't signed by your midseason bye, he is gone.

If it's not done by our next game, he's gone.

How hard can we squeeze the deal is the question? Cause Saturday was as bad as I've seen him.

Fumbles, missed handbells from a metre, poor workrate, dinky kicks. Can that still get you the highest first rounder and a second from Freo?

Is 2024 Liam Baker the same value of 2023 Lachie *smile*? That's Blair Hartley's challenge.

Yeah I remember that unwritten lore from 2017 with Dusty's signing ......

Oh wait

(btw it is generally right but I am not sure with Bakes. I am not sure he has decided)

Possibly but 28yo, doubt he'd be on the radar in any form whatsoever. Averaging 6 disposals this year (admiteddly 2 as sub), O.9 goals & only 0.1 goal assists. That's a long way back.

I think poor work rate is a bit harsh. Again had the most pressure acts for the Tigers by a long way. And most tackles. Work rate is one thing I never question from Baker.

Not sure about the unwritten law. Have good players not signed after a mid-season break?

R15. Batted #2 mid. Way too high. Martin can't walk and Shai could't either after the corkie.

Baker was hung out to dry by fate. Massively exposed. Our #3 mid was Thom Dao.

You take a lame Dion Prestia out of that midfield and we are Nineteenthmond.

Baker is a 20 touch goal a game change mid. He could do no more in that game batting #2 mid in a side with no other AFL mids on the park.

We need him on board with tanking the *smile* out of this season to bring in a nice little champion to share the load. Maybe even two.

And Dow had just 6 pressure acts for the whole game as a mid, ZERO in the second half. 1 tackle. I mean if you want to talk lack of work rate, this is your man.

Dow's not AFL class at this stage, tl. *smile*, he leaks. Baker was just hung out.

I liked butler but he wasn’t a great loss. Played a few good games with the saints as he did with us.
We need a goal kicking small forward Butts isn’t it !

He wasn't getting a game and we wanted a first round pick for him.

Now we want him back.

But again, Lyon-Ball. They're averaging 73 points per game, which is 4th lowest.

Butler turned 28 this month, so he still has a few years in him. I'm sure most people agree he can provide more than Cumberland and Mansell.

And Tigers averaging even less per game. Maybe, maybe not. Based on what I've seen this year I prefer Mansell. That's how bad Butler has been going. It will be a while before Tigers are back in finals contention, don't see the point of a Butler for the next 3 years on his down slope.

gimme a spell. 28 is career peak. he's got 3-4 more good years, which is enough time to groom his replacement. we should be back in finals in 3 years. Won't cost us a bomb in terms of money and trade (he might even be a FA). And he knows the club.

26yo to 28yo is peak. 27yo & 28yo definitely hasn't been Butler's peak. Or do you think he's had a good year. Butler at the club for the next 3 years would be a serious mistake. For what purpose? To help us finish bottom? Of course he's not going to cost much, he's of little value, and on the downside. We need to look to build on our youngsters. If we don't have them, keep recruiting and give them the experience. One thing the Tigers have been good at is finding hidden gems cheaply. That's my preferred option to recycling past players at the club.

PS we won't be back in finals in the next 3 years imo. We don't have the young players to make up the losses of some star players retired or retiring. We need to recruit hard, a 5 year plan imo. If only we had started it 2 years ago instead of chasing the impossible 4th premiership.

I've always had this rule. If you are in year 1 of a full rebuild, it doesn't matter how bad the state of your list is, you should be able to make finals within 4 years and be flag contenders within 6-7 years. For example, Dimma made finals in year 4, and we won a flag in year 8.

I am happy to accept we are currently in year 1 as we started 2024 with a new coach. So Yze has 3 years to get us into finals or he should be sacked IMO.

However, I am hoping that we are Hawthorn circa 2004 and not Richmond Circa 2004.

When Hawthorn got Buddy, Roughead and Lewis in 2004, they already had Hodge, Mitchell, Crawford, etc. We didn’t.

Assuming they all stay, we already have Bolton, Balta, Baker, 2 x Rioili’s, Taranto, Gibcus, Miller, Brown, Clarke, Ross Ryan, Banks, Young, etc, that should be around for our next tilt. Even if some depart, there is still a core there.

So yes, if we nail our draft picks this year, I fully expect to be in flag contention by no later than year 6.

Fair enough. I do have to question a few of those players you have mentioned as part of our next tilt. 1 x Rioli, Clarke, Young, Ryan, Banks. You also need some AAs in your side. Probably only three I see as potentials atm Bolton, Balta, D Rioli. I think 2 or 3 years of solid recruiting via good draft picks and then another 2 to 3 years before we're possible contenders again. Remembering also you never nail all your draft picks. 4 to 6 years. No need for the aging 6 disposal per game Butler whatsoever.
