Welcome Josh Gibcus

I have not seen Gibcus have one worrying clash contest in the first two rounds, he is your classic interceptor or arriving to contests with impeccable timing to spoil or mark somewhat avoiding too much physical contact.
No sign of the club shielding him either, only one player had more than his TOG of 88% on the weekend and that was Ben Miller.

**As an aside: Jeez Josh is an impressive trainer, quite astounding really for one so young.
Caesar, I'm grateful for your training reports and insights because I know you see the players daily/weekly, so your feedback is based on seeing them live. It's just fantastic, thanks mate.

Agree with many of you.

What I also like about him is two other qualities: he is a very smart footballer and is competitive, he looks a fighter who hates being beaten.
Now maybe he is not Jack Riewoldt smart, but he is smart. Have been to both matches, only when I watched the replays, did I get to see how smart he is.

That end to end play in the 3rd Qtr that led to the Balta goal - perfectly timed handpass of someone who reads the game, he isnt just a good athlete.
Smart spoil over the line in the 2nd Qtr, like you said Caesar he read the ball early and knew exactly how to avoid getting outbodied in order to make the spoil.

He wants to be good too.

Its looking now as if the Tigers drafted Josh as a Key back to allow Noah to go Forward.

Tarrant buys Josh 2 years development under the guidance of Grimes, Tigga and Broad as well.

Spot on
It all makes sense
Balta is young enough to develop as a forward.
Tarrant fits the hole that Balta leaves and then BigC has 30-40 games to learn off Grimes BigV Broad and Tarrant.
Top drafting

Ans also makes sense why we let Chol and CCJ go, as neither would be as good as Noah.

Gibbo appears to be a blue chip 250 gamer.

I dont care if Hobbs wins a Brownlow - Gibbo was a no brainer.

His released Notorious, who could be the new Buddy Franklin.

wait'll we unleash The Sonz

Possibly, but I think necessity was the mother of invention there. Bringing in Tarrant and Gibcus meant someone had to be shifted and given that he'd played elsewhere before Noah was the easiest of the bunch to move. Still, I'll put my hand up and say he's been a lot better than I thought he would be. As to whether he was better than CCJ and Chol, my sense from the narrative around was that we wanted to keep CCJ but not at the money Norf were throwing around. Chol was always going. Looking like a blessing in disguise though, given CCJ has already been dropped.

Think the club are genuinely as surprised as we are with how well the Balta move has gone to date.
Hardwick even admitted 1 week out from the season that he wasn’t sure where to play him.
Has created a luxury that can only be described as a god send as our future KPF stocks looked totally bare thrift.
We now have a still very young KPF sorted and have picked up a new KPD who has 250 games stamped all over him.
Think Gibcus was actually a two way bet. Potential forward or back.
Genius or luck? Maybe a bit of both?

Letting CJ & Chol go had nothing to do with Josh being drafted IMO, we were genuinely surprised he was still on the board and basically had no choice as he was a clear selection as best available, this has obviously allowed us to send Balta forward, but even after drafting Josh would Dimma and co genuinely believe he would be best 22 rd1, i doubt it.

We definitely need a few mids stepping up as Dion, Dusty, Lambo etc have concerns, in saying all this we have some exciting times ahead as im really bullish on Sonz, Banks & Brown.

And Draft Central listed kicking as an area for improvemento_O .

"Gibcus doesn’t have many weaknesses to his game as a developing key defender but the one area that can undo his hard work is his kicking, where he has often bitten off more than he can chew"

I for one am liking what Gibbo is chewing at the moment ;) :)

I like to Google old draft profiles of players, and their kicking descriptions are probably the most hit or miss in hindsight.

I wonder if "biting off more than he can chew" is sometimes just a sign of a smart player discovering his boundaries. They see the game, then attempt to execute a bold option quickly - the mind equivalent of having a growth spurt and then learning how to use your bigger body.

It's good to drink one less than your limit, but maybe chewing is the other way around? Sometimes I get those the wrong way around...

Blue chip star of the future, not even 19 until next month. When was the last time we had a KPP playing so early in his career? Maybe Jack and before him Richo and Ottens, all bona fide stars of the game.
Only issue atm is physical development. That last goal that Brander got on Sunday was only because Gibcus was pushed aside due to his lack of size and strength but that will come.

So much easier to find a couple of mids than a couple of KPPs.

In the early 2010's we had a star core of that consisted of:

1 x star KPF
1 x Brownlow midfielder
1 x star KPD
1 x Brownlow midfielder

...drafted in that order. We had 10 years to build around those 4 pillars.

Including Bolton, we might already have 3 of those 4 pillars ticked off for the next 10 years. One more to go. After that, we have several years to replace a couple of high quality midfielders at the Lambert / Prestia / Edwards level, which isn't easy but definitely possible with enough time. They came from a first rounder, a second rounder, and a rookie pick. We have the luxury to spend 5 years trying to find those types now that the tall pillars are locked in for the next 10 years, so it's massive to already have Balta and Gibcus. And so much better to have drafted them as kids than to trade everything for 27-29yo's like Geelong do.

This goes back to Benny Gale structuring up the club so each department can do their thing. Most coaches probably have too much influence over list management, but during our premiership years, we always went to the draft and backed in our recruiters. That doesn't happen at most clubs. We resisted the temptation to trade away first rounders for mature talent or any make other costly short-term list management decision. Our recruiters had freedom to draft for the long-term regardless of ladder position (a couple of low-cost picks were mature like Pickett). This strategy didn't cost us at all in the moment (still got 3 flags) and looks to have set us up better than any previous dynasty club coming off 3 flags.

The Richmond FC could be in the midst of a very long-term plan that gives the term "sustained success" a new perspective.

I dont think we "let" either go.
i reckon we would have kept Chol on a 1/2 year contract with low $$$$, but the Suns offered him 4 years on decent money.
Likewise, CCJ we were just outbid for.

Has the natural talent combined with the gifts he has been given by god - Height leap pace

only thing was his work ethic and determination and that looks like he has it in spades

But you need to keep testing your limits to see if they have moved.
Unfortunately my limits have gone downhill something chronic over the last few years, *smile* old age keeps sneaking up on me n proving that I'm not still 21.

Just as long as the club doesn't start getting antsy if they have a couple of quiet years n throw the plan in the bin to overpay for a couple of aging champions to have one last crack at another flag.
