Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Ok, time to take a sober look at the stats, now that the home and away season is over what actually happened?

Well, we got screwed, and not for the first time.

The lowest frees for per game:

Frees for H&A 2024.jpg

Amongst the highest frees against but a few in our region:

Frees against H&A 2024.jpg

As for the differential, it is stark:

You can also see this in a scatter diagram:

This is an ongoing shafting:

Free Kick Differential 2017 to 2024.jpg

That's 8 years of data and we are a total outlier - least frees for and most frees against.

If this isn't bias then what the hell is it?

Not like Gold Coast suddenly got less frees for after our coach went there, quite the opposite, most frees for per game in 2024.

DS

Note: the differential is per game.

All the arguments of why we got shafted over the years have gone ie Hardwick, the game plan/style, the players! The only things that remain are we are Richmond and we get shafted.

I'll give the umps credit for 1 thing. They got the crowd involved on Saturday.
1st half was like watching a team who didnt want to win playing a team no cared if they won. No atmosphere.
But once the umps started doing us over the crowd got hyped. Much more engaging game.

Robbo if calling would have said the crowd was chanting 'boring'

Watched OTC last night. Lyon arguing that all teams have to start coaching small fwds to duck like Ginnivan and Watson and the other guy or they will be disadvantaged. Specifically mentioned Stengle and Close could get a few more goals doing it, which is interesting for the side that gave us the Walter Raleigh of Ducking. Very matter-of-fact, acknowledged that the fans hate it, but presented it as cold hard fact, get used to it kind of thing.

This is where we're at

This thread now on page 4!!!!

When was the last stand 50m penalty?

Basically the AFL has acknowledged that the rule is a complete joke without acknowledging it.
Any player who creeps back 20cm is now "outside 5"
Any player who runs from behind the mark to man the mark doesn't have an issue.
Minor moves left and right and even complete movement as the player plays on are now not infringements.
Does the umpire now blow their whistle twice quickly to indicate play on?

But the AFL will reserve their right to pluck one out as they see fit because its a complicated game.

When was the last time we heard from Kane? Clearly that mealy mouthed exec can just collect a paycheck now without any public limelight.

The only good thing this week was that the incorrect player calling to get the ball handed the ball back to them doesn't lead to the player throwing it to that person getting a 50m. At least they learnt from that shocker that went against the lions.

The Geelong BF thread was a massive umpire whingefest mainly on the dangerous tackle. Frees were pretty even but I get in any close game you remember the ones that go against you and not the ones that go for you. I was definitely against Geelong so would be biased against them big time and not have a pure neutral view.

Yeah, I mentioned on another thread umpire just letting Jizza stand wherever he wanted whilst continually calling him to stand on the boundary line but the ump just gave up, called play on. Another time the Geelong player on the mark was sucked into moving off the mark, he looks at the umpire as if to say “oh no, you’re gunna ping me 50” ump just ignores it. The broadcast showed a player on the mark moving about a metre off the mark as his opponent has a shot for goal, nuttin.

Umpiring has been 'good' (amazingly) in the finals IMO. Hasn't altered any results.

No Donlon and no Ray so no surprise.

Paying some blokes accentuating head contact with ground probably only flaw.

Ignoring stand rule great.

I've seen the in the back rule applied inconsistently during finals. Why did afl switch from binary to interpretation based just as players and fans had grown accustomed to it? Silly.

But, you need to remember that Aussie rules is the most difficult game in the world to umpire. Why the hell would AFLHQ want to make it easier for the umpires to adjudicate the game by having a simple straight forward iron clad rule, when they can have another dollop of beige miasma n adjudicate the game on vibe n guess work???

Too many variables, the player/team, the mood of the umpire, the umpiring department and of course what side of the bed AFL HQ gets up on a particular day.
A 'dissent' rule is a valid rule- we dont want footy to be like football in the way refs/umpires are treated. The issue as always was the rule was incredibly strict for a short while, then loosened, but was still paid, now it is not paid at all. All with no clarification about why the change has happened.

I am saying with the Human Factor too many variables, e.g. If an umpire likes an team/ player he/she may go easier.
