Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Even neutrals are starting to notice.

A footy-nut relative of mine, follows a different team, and NEVER buys into umpire conspiracy theories, is now pointing out Richmond is regularly copping rough treatment from the umpires - momentum-turning decisions and mystifying technical rules.

But what is the solution?

I reckon we need to get smart and - if we aren't already - do some serious coaching on how to handle and bluff the umpires. If they are doing it already, they need to review their approach and try something else as we are sitting ducks out there!

It's also time we started to become a 'squeaky wheel' and communicate more with the umpires - again, we may be doing this already and it could be that we are simply getting 'stiffed' for no good reason.

I attended the match with a Geelong fan friend who follows the Cats from a distance, rarely attending games. At quarter time I predicted that the higher-ranked team usually got the rub of the green where umpiring was concerned and he took offence, thinking that I was having a go at the Cats. We had a drink with another mate (fellow Tragic) at half-time and he pointed out that there were going to be more dodgy frees to the Cats in the third quarter.

He was agreeing with me by the end of the game, probably because I banged on about it incessantly as each and every free kick unfolded. He even went home and told his wife so, God bless him.

I'm not sure he will ever go to the footy with me again, BTW. Innocents who only follow footy when their teams are winning can't handle a Richmond-tragic's perspective in these circumstances. It's like spending two-and-a-half hours in a Thai prison when the most daring thing you have ever done in your life is stay in a Hotel that is only four stars.

;D

Normally when I calm down and watch the replay its not as bad, but this time it was worse. 2nd Q we got nothing, no obvious frees (I counted 4), no 50/50s, (heaps), Geelong got everything. Johnson, mate, sniping all night, gave away nothing, got a heap of tiggy touchwoods. Cotch was fair dinkum targetted, can't the umps realise that in this day and age?

Still waiting for someone from the club to stand up to Geisch and tell him his sh$%^ squad has cost us 2 games this year and a 100 point flogging in the other one. Until that happens we can expect a right royal rogering for the remainder of the year.

When Vickery went down with blood all over him, under AFL rules the umpire is to stop play at the next immediate opportunity. There were five opportunities for an umpire to stop the game, whether it be a mark or free. We were a man down during this period. The umpire actually almost ran into Vickery and the trainers during this period. Play was never stopped but continued the entire time as trainers tried to get the bloodied Vickery off the ground.

22.3 Active Bleeding — role of umpire
22.3.1 role of umpire
Where a field Umpire is of the opinion that a Player is Actively Bleeding, the field Umpire must stop play at the first available opportunity:
(a) direct the Player concerned to immediately leave the
Playing Surface; and
(b) subject to Law 22.3.3, wait a reasonable period to allow
the replacement Player to take up position before recommencing play; and recommence play.

was never going to happen. The media never comment on umpires overall performance. Just one offs like last weeks goal farce and the Thompson 'push'

there is so many rule changes the umps are forgetting allot of the basic rules like dropping the ball AFL is a joke im starting to lose interest

While I would love to see that it certainly wouldn't help. Rather than do nothing and expect a different outcome I do believe the club needs to try and improve the relationship between Richmond and the umpires. Give them a regular spot to come and talk to our players, let them sit in on our match reviews, offer our facilities to help them train, something, anything. The more time we put in to the relationship the more likely we are to get something back.

I saw this in the sport I was involved in when a bit younger. A sport that provides the umpires a fair bit of leeway in how they apply the rules and where inconsistent application is common place. Purely by chance, part way through the year, we ended up sharing the same training facility. I felt that we started to get a better rub of the green after spending a bit more time with them.

Not saying its right, however, intimidation is the emotion above all that makes people second guess their actions. It's why interstate teams get such a dream run at home.

yeah we can invite them in for a shower and flick them with wet towels

Geisch was trying to explain the marking contest ban, sorry, pushing in a marking contest rule. Embarrassing.

Putting aside his confusing, vague explanation, apparently you're not allowed to bump, or push in the side or front anymore. I did not know that.

what do people expect from the robot text book umpires? if a finger nail touches a hair on an opponents head then they will blow too high because "technically" it's too high. the robots need to be seen to be controlling the game.

That's new to me the push in the side rule.

Remember when Richo did it after kicking a goal against Essendon then the ump gave him a 50.That cost us the win.
Same old maggots,always cheating.

Just finished watching the first half. Towards the end of the 2nd quarter you could see that Geelong upped their intensity and also their physicality especially towards Cotchin. Surely the umps could see him being dumped and scragged at every opportunity? So what do they do? Pay a free against him to the chief scragger, Johnson. That decision to me was the turning point from what I saw. I think the club have a reasonable case to take to the AFL for more protection be afforded Cotchin.

In one way I admire Geelong's toughness and the goals that were kicked late in that quarter were all quality. More power to them. What we need to do is learn to match intensity and physicality with top sides when required without retaliating and giving away frees.

lol at the geesh explaining the push in the marking contest rule. has no idea. apparently now you can push to the side if you don't fully extend your arms. making it up as they go.
