Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

If this is how we are feeling about the umpiring, imagine how Port Adelaide fans are feeling after their game against NM, 38-15 free kicks NM's way.

I'm up to 100 to zero winning this argument.
They are biassed and if you don't think so,you think the World is flat!!!!!

We play Port next week on their home patch.
You aint seen nothing yet.

How can you be competitive when in a quarter the free kicks were 10 to 0?

I can't believe this!!!

I've had it with the AFL and their BS.

Since Dimwittio has taken office, the game has gone down the sink.

I drunk myself to oblivion, the loss hurt but the umpiring affected me more.

How are you supposed to get into a game when frees for your side get ignored and any tiggy touchwood free goes to the opposition?

WHAT A JOKE!

Ump appreciation week, geez they make it very hard to be appreciative. Terrible. They love a favourite, and S Johnson and J Selwood. Both are sniping, staging, whinging pricks. That's good leadership apparently

I found it hard to fathom how a team that dominated the first half (or most of it) had 5 frees to their 15. Surely if your first to the ball and winning possession then you would be on the end of a few frees, not the team 2nd to the ball most of the time. I think umpires are over rated and their needs to be a new educator for them as it is clear the current boss is useless.

The amount of puzzling and made up decisions against the tigers are mounting by the week, does anybody remember last year against st kilda when we got to 15 pts up in the last when the umpire pulled this out at the centre bounce, " free kick against maric for jumping up and down too early " and these mind boggling frees always happen when we have got out to a lead, the PA game in 2012 when McBurney went on his 3rd qtr rampage against us, how many times does the opposition get a flurry of frees that gets them back into the match and i'm not talking about the deep in defence frees it's the middle of the ground and forward of centre frees that seem to happen and when we finally get a free its the last line of defense.

This is what I said last week and now I can add the newman incident to that. Oh and to add to the above I forgot to add the Batch gentle bump to Cameron that was paid a free kick against GWS last year.

That umpiring last night was as close to outright cheating as you'll ever see.

It was as if they were really enjoying killing our momentum and fluffing up Geelong's pillow.

I know it was undisciplined when Pettard told it like it was, but the expression on the umps face was priceless, he looked stunned, it said '*smile*, he's onto me'.

I know I go on about the difficulties of umpiring but they were rough on us on Saturday.
Just loved Pettard commenting on the poor deal he got. Maybe we should see more of that

Tapscott got a free against and was reported for bumping Lucas? with no head contact
but because it was a hard bump and Lucas stayed down for a second (holding his side) the ump thought 'oh *smile*, musta been to the head' ::)

Saw Robbie Warnock out bustle Spencer IN THE SIDE at a boundary throw in on the TV today and umpire blows whistle, free to Spencer. It was simply good, strong ruck work. Warnock just laughed, it's all you can do.

Saw that too ::)

I just wish they would consistently umpire like in a GF. Only 'earnt' frees are paid. Every game is umpired completely differently. Sometimes every soft touch is pedantically umpired. Other times the whistle is rarely heard. More often it is inconsistently and arbitrarily umpired which seems to favor particular players or clubs. What is most irritating is that so many frees are ignored but then plucked at an umpires convenience to 'keep the game flowing'. The present system is an embarrassment to the administrators of the game and requires a massive overhaul!

In fairness to the umps I think everyone is confused.

It made me feel good reading this thread. I'm not alone, we were shafted, this was the match report in the Age, how often do you see something like this:

DOUGHNUT
The first half was a free-flowing affair with a lot let go by the umpires but it was still remarkable that Richmond earned not a single free kick in the second quarter. The umpires certainly became a lot more involved in the third term in a frenzied five-minute period when fights erupted, free kicks were reversed and 50-metre penalties doled out. The Tigers over the night had the lesser of the umpiring.

When you're playing a good side you need to play well and for things to go right, and a bit of luck. Losing both rucks and geting shafted by bewilderingly bias umpiring in the second and third Qs last night killed the game.

Also, as an aside, I haven't seen it posted here, the commentators really made a point of the umpires mouthing instructions at Knights during his missed set shot. They were pretty pissed off about it. Knights is running in to kick, just as its obvious he's about to sink the boot, the ump scream '15 seconds' in his face! It was obvious that he was about to kick in 1 or 2 seconds, Knights missed the kick, Darcy reckons the ump put him off and was snakey

Just incredibly bad. Rude. Unaware.

Noticed them making an effort to refer to players by name this year, e.g. whistle -> 'Holding! Marc Murphy! Free kick to Marc Murphy'. Lesser-known players get things like 'Free kick to you. Yeah, yours.' Or they get the player's name wrong like on Friday night.

Yeah just like the ump reporting "Talbot" for striking Simpson.

It was Simpson. Completely staged for the free. was laying on his back like he was knocked out......til he heard the whistle for the free when he miraculously recovered and jumped back to his feet. A clear case of staging because there was no contact to the head. I guarantee he will not be sited for it. You have to remember, Umpires DO NOT GUESS! they only pay what they see.....Geish has told us so.

My question to Geish. If Umpires only pay what they see, like you have told us many times. Why was there a free and a report when nothing happened?

Amazing.

I thought after the first couple of games that Cotchin had reached that level where he got a good run from the umpires on a regular basis. The level where you get that extra couple of seconds in a tackle, you get the blocking frees at stoppages etc. Tonight I realized how far from the truth that is. Amongst other things I watched in amazement as Selwood threw the ball 20 metres right in front of the umpire, whistle blows.....free kick Selwood for too high.

Don't forget to mention that only moments earlier a fresh air handball (Stokes I think) was simply called play on. He had prior opportunity and was simply out tackled,,, PLAY ON! This umpire farce is a complete joke. Cotch being constantly man-handled used to earn him free kicks, now it seems that they don't see that as necessary.

this. the umpires do what they do. they're human and are generally biased (when that occurs) to the more skilful side making the play.

Or they simply gift the underdog ample frees to keep them in the game. Like against GWS last year.

I agree that we shouldn't even bother about umpiring decisions, some weeks they help and others they don't but they don't usually depict the outcome of a game. I just hate seeing howlers. Sometimes they change the momentum of a game and I noticed that on the weekend.

I had a look at Knights' 2 set shot misses but can't see this happening. Would you know when this happened, I'd like to have a look at it, must have been someone else.

I keep saying it but its amazing how the commentators quickly go into ump supporting mode. I'm beginning to think that they are told not to bag the umpires.

You're just beginning to think that TT? I think it is glaringly obvious. There are rules to commentary. Another is 'Don't correct your fellow commentator if he makes a mistake in his call'.

I guess the reality is that it would kill the call if they did complain about poor decisions.

That all said I do believe that umpiring is a VERY difficult job and every allowance should be made to help these guys get it right all match.
