Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Col.W.Kurtz said:
The reality is aside from Richmond fan forums that the umpires will receive no crticism of this of this because the media isn't interested in any Richmond story that isn't negative.

Selwood can get away with as much stageing, sniping and baiting he likes and a conga line of suck holes in the media will call him 'fair' because he is a good player.

The love for selwood in the media makes me puke, his consistent "bending of the rules" is just not in the spirit of the game, and the umpires fall for it every week. Dog of the highest order.

Selwood would be in the top 5 of the most disliked players in the league.
After last night, I know why

Now I understand. This all came from Hunt disposing of Newman as he kicked it forward. Looked ordinary from Hunt even with the poor camerawork. And of course Geel got the free. And Newy lost it. I think I forgive him.

What a pathetic cop out. Why should they be absolved from criticism?

That umpiring in the second quarter was diabolical. The Newman incident? Farcical! How does a bloke who disposes of the footy who then gets taken down by a sling tackle AFTER he has kicked the ball get a free against him?

Momentum killers, game killers, call it whatever!

Umpire appreciation week. Give me a spell. The game is not about them. It just shows how precious and insecure they are.
I think you summed it up well there SA, why would you have an umpire appreciation week, a good umpire is one the you don't notice and doesn't need a lot of credit for which he is highly paid to work in a part time job. I've been to games where I couldn't tell you their names cause they did a good job and weren't noticed, but I can tell you the names of the craphouse ones, the ones that make me cringe when I see their name in the Record, why highlight the poorest performing part of our game and celebrate it!

I am so sick of being screwed by these geeks! When the hell is our club going to stand up and give it to Geisch & co publicly! No way the big clubs would roll over like we do every week. Who cares if we cop a fine it might mean the umps think twice before screwing us next time.

Agree the club needs to go into bat for supporters.
I think last night was pay back from the umpires for what Hardwick said about goal umpires last week.
Gale needs to go to the top rather than through media

Line in the and moment wouldn't go astray. You can't allow yourself to be bullied by a bunch of clownshoes in green tops week in week out

You can't win though!! obviously we would cop a fine, but the general public would just see at as winging and blaming umpires instead of our own performance. Out of curiosity I had a look at Big footy (because its the only general footy forum I know of) to see what the opposition supporter reaction was and they were giving it to us because the crowd was booing so much

My lads (cats) got an archair ride last night. Its not just richmond that get screwed though...all teams do at various stages (saints even worse). Try playing at Subi, no matterwho ya follow!
So many problems with the umpiring topic, where does one start. ? Heres one, making the umpires "part of the game/package" therefore they can draw attention to them selves, with thier "look at me" im part of why you come to the football. ( i mean seriously does any other major sport do this????) What about "advising/coaching" players at ball ups etc "a metre clear, or no scragging"..etc etc, my thoery is if ya want to scag its the players decision, and he will be penalised,no for the umps to tell him how he plays his opponent. Thats even ebfore we start discussing the silly rules and so called "interpretations"

So its not just us who find it utterly confusing and disheartening ;) Just let the players play footy and pay the obvious frees. What is so hard about that ?

AFL games are umpired for continuity of play and on reputation, not on merit. Geelong, Hawthorn, Collingwood and Sydney are the beneficiaries of "rep" frees every week against their more lowly-ranked opponents and last night's effort has raised this to a new level.

During that crucial period when Geelong transitioned from 3 goals down to 4 goals up they enjoyed a run of 10 free kicks to 1. No team can stem the tide when so many disputed balls are decided by the whistle. The Newman incident should be shown and dissected to every umpire on the list as it epitomises the inherent unfairness in the way they look at games.

It occurred at a time when Geelong was ramping up the physical pressure. Newman broke away from a crowded area with the ball and delivered cleanly to Martin, who most likely should have been pinged for a push in the back in the marking contest. This should have been rendered irrelevant as Newman was heavily tackled by Hunt who arrived late and dumped him into the turf. His head is seen to bounce off the ground from the impact. This was a clear free kick upfield. It was also an illegal application of physical pressure and intimidation. Look at the replay and you will see Hunt dumped several players last night as he applied physical pressure. However the umpire did not penalise him on any occasions, making it easy for his team to intimidate.

What is Newman to do? Does he meekly accept that when the bully-boys get going they will do this to you, the umpires will ignore it and you will be tasting grass until you lose control of the game? He dumped him back, exerting his own pressure. The umpire who ignored the first dumping is quick to stamp on this insurrection, paying a free to Hunt. The die is cast. Geelong can do as they please, Richmond must adhere to the strict letter of the law.

Enter Selwood from 20 metres away. Calm. Cool. Composed. Sledging for all he is worth. No doubt he was urging Newman to see the funny side of it all, the funny side being that Newman is a veteran who has never played in a final whilst he, himself is a three-time Premiership player. Newman pushed him away. Sucked in, Newman, sucked in umpire. Fifty metres. Selwood, suddenly angry, grabs Newman in a bear- hug and dumps him to the grass again. No reversal. One rule for one, a different rule for another.

The ball is relayed forward and Petterd tackles a Geelong player around the waist. For Geelong players, their heads are apparently so big that anything above the hips is considered part of the head. A mumbled "Oh, my God" and another 50 gifts them a goal.

During that period of time, Richmond players did not have heads at all. Their one free kick came from shepherding the forward off the ball in a 2 on 1 marking contest, which occurred a number of times but was only penalised once. Geelong's rucks worked in tandem, one wrestled, one attended to the hit-out. Richmond players were tackled with ferocity as the pressure went up again.

It is easy to be the bully boys when the umpire is aiding and abetting.

There was some recent speculation in the media about how North Melb and Richmond are two sides that are trying to jump from the middle reaches of the ladder but can't seem to take that final step. This is why.

Problem is JK they cannot even do that!

Every game should be umpired like the GF. That is the biggest issue and to be consistent across the year isn't hard. In all honesty the umps department are making a rod for their own backs by having specific rules they "focus on" week to week and this just increases the confusion. No wonder leagues cannot find umpires!

ive come to realise a few of our players do tend to roll onto their opponents back when we tackle them on the ground. we dont push but we lie on them. free against. ok.
but then in the 3rd soon after the Newman incident, Ellis at CHF has a Cat sitting in his back while he is on the ground. no free. goal follows to the cats. that 'annoyed' me.

You missed West Coast there TOT and after that game last week not sure the Hawks are in the same league as the others.

spot on tot70

remember cotchin being in a headlock as it came out of the centre and no free..and on and on

imagine if king or mcguanne walked over top selwood and did what selwood did to newman..reverse the players..there is no way on earth the umps would of paid king or mcguanne the benefit like they did selwood
he is a protected species and yet i thought ducks season was still okay....

Alas no they wouldn't, as they realise if the whole empire falls (umpiring, then in turn the WHOLE afl) then they thier club and in fact the whole INDUSTRY/BUSINESS then thier well paid jobs are in danger. Better to keep ya mouth shut and agree with the dictatorship, cos ya aint gunna win with em no matter what. Chek out ANYONE or ANY CLUB that has challenged the EMPIRE.

Agree. It was disgraceful umpiring. Firstly in that we didn't get a relayed free from Hunt's crude tackle but actually got a free against us for Newman's rightful retaliation. Secondly because of the Selwood farce afterwards. Newman was very unfairly treated.

That umpiring last night was as close to outright cheating as you'll ever see.
