Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Third quarter umpire calls for rucks at a boundary throw in Geelong player standing a couple of meters raises his hand and yet doesn't compete at all. Ellis was ridden into the ground and no free I could go on and as for that fifty when Selwood ran into Newman and then threw himself on the ground said it all. Umpires were poor all night but the howlers seemed to go against us and even if it is just a case of *smile* happens then fine but if the AFL didn't want any perception of bias then they should never have appointed to the head of the umpiring department a person who was sacked as coach of a club. Until that is rectified then the perception will remain.

Most annoying thing is the frees ended up being 18-13 due to a couple of late cheapies to us. So when the umpiring review comes arounf this week they will pat eachother on the back and say a job well done.

Yep, just wrote the same thing on game day thread. Absolutely predictable.

Don't they show all the frees and give an explanation behind them, both positive and negative, on the site that can't be mentioned? That's not done on numbers.

I thought after the first couple of games that Cotchin had reached that level where he got a good run from the umpires on a regular basis. The level where you get that extra couple of seconds in a tackle, you get the blocking frees at stoppages etc. Tonight I realized how far from the truth that is. Amongst other things I watched in amazement as Selwood threw the ball 20 metres right in front of the umpire, whistle blows.....free kick Selwood for too high.

This is clearly how the umpire see Joel Selwood!!

this. the umpires do what they do. they're human and are generally biased (when that occurs) to the more skilful side making the play.

Horrible umpiring but I'm sick of people blaming the umpires every week.
I don't think anyone is blaming the umpires for the loss just that there were many soft frees to Geelng and many frees not paid against them.

I suppose most people have already said it, but the last 10 minutes of the 2nd quarter was just high farce. If you didn't konw better you'd think the umps were literally asked to swing the game. Free after free went to them for bugger all. Absolutely sucked the momentum right out of us.

At the ground you could just sense the whole thing. It was like a balloon being delflated.

I hate when umpires just wreck a really good spectacle.

The give the doubt to reputation and what the expect to happen, Johnston holds Jackson in the center square (which he did), no free kick and not even Richmond supporters expect it. Other way round and not only does Johnston get a free the channel 7 boys pull out the super slow mo.

Was at the game. Could somebody please explain to me the ruck rule. I had the binoculars on the boundary and around the ground throw ins. Many times I saw Maric and ONE of the cats ruckmen raise their hands, I assume to answer the umpire's question on who the ruckman was. Then Maric gets completely swamped by extra geelong players going in over the top of him. The umpire cannot claim they couldn't see anything, they are right there. If the rule is only ONE ruckman can contest the ball up/ throw in, then bloody well enforce it. If it means it's a free for all, then stop the pointless exercise of the umpires asking who the ruckman is.

no no no no no.

the game is going to the dogs. it shouldn't be this way. and we as fans of the game definitely shouldn't accept it as 'it is what it is'

I keep saying it but its amazing how the commentators quickly go into ump supporting mode. I'm beginning to think that they are told not to bag the umpires.

To be honest, I am not far from giving up on this game. Richmond make enough errors on their own without dealing with this *smile*!! It is no longer a fair contest and Umpires are having far too much influence on games. I just don't understand how one team (not necessarily us) often gets all the 50/50 frees and the other none in one game

NO I DON"T THINK THIS IS THE REASON WE LOST.

What a pathetic cop out. Why should they be absolved from criticism?

That umpiring in the second quarter was diabolical. The Newman incident? Farcical! How does a bloke who disposes of the footy who then gets taken down by a sling tackle AFTER he has kicked the ball get a free against him?

Momentum killers, game killers, call it whatever!

Umpire appreciation week. Give me a spell. The game is not about them. It just shows how precious and insecure they are.

This league has deteriorated badly and I feel sorry for the kids of nowadays and the future. I'm glad I grew up watching better times.

Well said, the free kick turned the game on it's head, absolutely ridiculous umpiring. I can't wait for Giesch the apologist to give us a sermon on how the umpires performed flawlessly. I'm still getting over just how poorly they adjudicated, just disgraceful.
