Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

The amount of puzzling and made up decisions against the tigers are mounting by the week, does anybody remember last year against st kilda when we got to 15 pts up in the last when the umpire pulled this out at the centre bounce, " free kick against maric for jumping up and down too early " and these mind boggling frees always happen when we have got out to a lead, the PA game in 2012 when McBurney went on his 3rd qtr rampage against us, how mant times does the opposition get a flurry of frees that gets hem back into the match and i'm not talking about the deep in defence frees it's the middle of the ground and forward of centre frees that seem to happen and when we finally get a free its the last line of defense.

It's been happening since the first time I set my eyes on the game.
It's just not us. They have there favourites and where not one of them.
I reckon giesh is a dumb *smile* that shouldn't be any near the game let alone in charge of a dept of the AfL

A free to Sylvia v Brisbane today is a contender for the worst decisions of all time. Sylvia jumped on the Brisbane player attempting a mark, grabbed him around the neck and flattened him while going nowhere near the ball, and ended up with the free. Can only assume the umpire thought the Brisbane player was tunnelling. Crazy.

Sick of contact to a players back or a player being tackled in the back, ie ran down from behind & tackled, being a free kick. I've always known the rule as 'push in the back'. So if a player pushes a player in the back pay a free, but not for contact or a tackle.
People talk about interpretations, umpires need to remember what the rule was designed for. Push in the back is there to stop players being pushed over and/or out of a contest, not to prevent tackling from anywhere.
The other one that is paid far too often, is 'chopping of he arms'. Originally bought into stop defenders chopping forwards at the bicep & elbows dropping the forwards arms, now it is paid for any contact when attempting a spoil.
AFL need to remember this is a physical contact game & that the players & spectators that have been drawn to the game, originally would've been drawn to it in part, because of this.

That one is becoming particularly annoying. Those tackles from behind are now becoming Tugs-of-war where the tackled player tries to fall to the ground, pulling the other player down on top of him for the free and the tackler tries to keep both himself and the other guy standing up. Where the ball is has become irrelevant.

I think the AFL doesn't want stoppages, so they have made a secret directive, to slowly introduce more of these free kicks. Knowing that generally a player tackled from behind will not have gotten rid of the ball. Easy option is to reward the player who got tackled with a free kick!

I may be in the minority, but I'd prefer to see a ball up any day over a player being given a soft free kick just for the so-called aesthetics of the game.

I'm of the view that far too many free kicks are paid in AFL & that the ugliest thing in footy is now the amount of 'free' possession players get, that in the spirit of the game don't deserve, all because a few execs & marketers need to justify their positions by coming up with something new every fortnight.

There is a very good chance that this is exactly what they are thinking. They are trying to market the game as a 360 degree, continuous running game and stoppages are an inconvenience.

Of course, they could just give a free kick every time a player disposes of the ball incorrectly but I guess they don't want 200 frees every game.

Exactly, an up & down game like basketball with incidental contact. I reckon they'd prefer the 200 freebies over 200 contested ball ups! I've got to start living in the new world where the umpires & marketers determine who wins the ball rather than the players.

Oh well, still can go across the road & watch the Storm to see a physical contest.

Well after watching the Hawks today I feel really sorry for them, even though they did win the game. The umps absolutely crucified them in the second half and nearly cost them the game. Gibson nearly lost the plot after a ridiculous free was paid against him (he should have RECEIVED a free prior) but just pulled himself back before giving away 50. The goal was missed. The difference between us and them is they are a little more composed when things go wrong and have people who step up to the plate.

For mine 2013 is about finding those leaders at RFC. Who is willing to do WHATEVER it takes??

The farce from last Friday continues. The goal umpire who according to Gieschen did nothing wrong has been demoted! Who makes the decisions on dropping/promoting the umps if it isn't Gieschen? He couldn't possibly have backed Edwick THEN dumped him......could he?

Standard AFL practice. Admit no liability and then dish out a punishment. ::)

Haha, yeah like the Dees, not guilty of 'tanking', so here's a $500k fine for being not guilty!

Alright I'll be the first to have a crack at this tonight - it seems that, unfortunately, I'm on this thread quite a bit. Too much for my liking. I want to take a different slant this week though. I want to concentrate more on how we stop being in a position where we are down by ten free kicks at half time with our captain getting manhandled continuously.

I think we need to hire TWO umpire liaisons / relationship managers. We need to find ways to get in the umpire good books. There is so much inconsistency and blatant favoritism that rather than just cop whatever the umps serve up week after week I'd prefer we took things in to our own hands and tried to turn it in to a positive for our team.

We should have someone consistently inviting the umpires to come and talk to our coaches and players, asking them how we can help them train, practice, improve and be part of that. Someone That is asking them to explain interpretations etc etc just to try and get them onside as much as we can.

I say TWO because I would like to volunteer my time to be the first one. Although I suspect I won't be able to hold my tongue and I'll probably only last a week after I tell them what I really think. So we will need a second one - kind of good cop bad cop thing. Hopefully the second liaison / relationship manager will help improve things for us.

Geelong have been the best team since 2007. And they have always been given a good run from the umpires over this period. Would love stats on this only the Eagles in Perth could compare.
