Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

I must admit I had a bit of an umpire-sookarama on Sunday. I couldn't help it and they brought it upon themselves.

They attracted attention early with that ridiculous free against McGuane when Dusty kicked the best goal I had seen since the Deledio goal five minutes earlier.

Once they had my attention, they held it by continuing to give free kicks to the opposition. These are the ones that I tend to remember.

Funny thing is, it doesn't matter how many frees they give going the other way, I have the memory of a goldfish for that stuff. Son the Younger had to remind me that we had just received the previous two frees on more that one occasion. Three seconds later, I had nothing, no recollection whatsoever.

I left the ground determined to watch the replay ASAP so I could analyse how bad they really were.

Apart from that ridiculous attention-grabber, they were actually OK. If anything, they gave a few too many frees for us purists who like the game to flow, but most of them were correct calls, even the slightly technical ones.

Considering the amount we as a supporter group love to whinge about umpires....
This thread has only just reached the number of pages as there were free kicks IN ONE SINGLE GAME.
We've done absolutely as much yammering and whingeing as we possibly can.
And you know why when you consider just how many free kicks it is possible to play in one single game.

The three that really stood out for me:

The one against McGuane for shepherding when Dusty kicked the 60 bomb goal in the first.

The 50m penalty against McGuane for being within the 5 metre zone of a bulldogs player when all McGuane was doing was following his opponent and was running past. He was already within 5 metres when the Bulldogs player got the ball. What's he supposed to do? Make himself invisible? Ridiculous!

The free against Rance when he fended off the Bulldogs player who DID ENCROACH into the 5 metre protected space when he wasn't there before and the umpire hadn't called 'play on' yet. Sure he got him high but he should have received a 50 m penalty as that infringement came first. So it's a 50 against McGuane but a free against Rance. Defies logic.

Then there's the rest of them but you get those evry match. Massively over umpired.

I've never heard so much moaning about free kicks than what the crowd where doing even before they knew who it was going too just because there seemed to be a free paid every time there was a contest.

Probably me. I groaned at a number of our frees as well as ours. You know its bad when that happens. :hihi

I backed the tigers in the 64-70 bracket and made a small fortune. Without these great umpires, it would have been 90+. well done gents. :clap

I thought the game in general was simply over umpired. We copped some bad ones that stood out more than the Dogs ones I thought.

Then again, I reckon we got a very good ride against the Saints in what was a tight game.

Swings and roundabouts.

Last thing I worry about going into a game is whether the umpires will give us a fair go or not, thats for sure.

That one was there. McGuane wondered into the area and just looked blankly at the umpire. It was just a loss of concentration.

You know a game is over-umpired when players start appealing for things like this, as Dusty did when he took a mark and pointed at Rob Murphy, who looked non-plussed. It is the same if the umps give a couple of deliberate out-of-bounds too early, players start appealing every time the ball goes out, thinking they are a chance of getting a soft one. The poor old ump is left to rue the fact that one of the other guys pulled the trigger too soon and now they have to pay them or look silly.

I hope Murphy makes that his Rascal of the Week tonight. Dusty was pretty cheeky there

A good game of umpiring occur's when you walk away from the ground talking about the game not about how bad the umpire's were even when you win.

Whinging about the umpiring when you lose is just natural.

yeah, I mentioned the "running to close to the guy who's taken a mark" in another thread. Stinker of a rule. And "hands in the back". If applied to the letter of the law almost every pack or contested mark will have someones hands touching someones back. But the umps only like to pay them in front of goals to either side. Love the theatre and controversy of it they do. And we're told the players cant use hands but they can use other parts of the body ie forearms, or hips or bum...but guess what? you do that you still get pinged!

Its a stinker because it is overly technical and let go more often than it is picked up.

All that is needed is common sense. If a player is too close to the man and hinders his progress in some way, then fair enough, it is a 50 m penalty. If he stands there like a stunned mullet and does nothing to affect the guy with the ball, then just get on with the game.

Dusty's goal that was disallowed was probably the worst free I have ever seen.

And don't get me started on Jack and Luke using their bodies legally to mark or shepherd.

That goal denied to Dusty was shocking. Player falls over and waves arms in the air and gets a free, and a tremendous goal doesn't count.

There were so many shockers it seems wrong to highlight just one but that really was one of the worst I've ever seen. Disgraceful decision from an umpire who was clearly just looking for any excuse to involve himself in the game.

Hopefully we get the number 25 from the stkilda game on satedey and pray we don't get number 15 from the doggies game

The only reason the bulldogs actually got possession of the ball was due to umpire 11, he was a shocker.
He was the Dogs best player by far.

Maybe the umps gave some rough decisions on Sunday but with the saints we had all the luck.
I used to ref football on a reasonable standard and know that in a pressure cooker atmosphere mistakes happen and all hell is let loose. When refereeing / umpiring a match you will never please everyone.
Umpires and referees are human and cannot be expected to make perfect decisions all the time so we have to live with the occasional error of judgement.
That said hope we have the rub of the green this week!

It didn't cost us the game, we did a fair job of that ourselves but..... :frustration :frustration :frustration :frustration :frustration :frustration

Who was umpire no. 21? He was a fair dinkum cheat :veryupset :veryupset

FIrst 5 or so minutes of the 3rd quarter was unbelievable. Helped their run. Wouldn't have made a difference to the result but gee they can spoil a spectacle. We've had a pretty good run overall this year so can't complain too much.

For the first few minutes after half time I thought they must have changed the rules at the break. Umpires were the least of our problems today though.
