Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Just watched Gieschen on the AFL website.

Admitted the Cotchin deliberate decision was a wrong call by the umpire. Also admitted that Lids copped it high and should have got a free kick but said umpire was correct in giving a free kick against and the 50 when he started arguing after not being given the free.

Why am I thinking 'hypocrite" . Seen and heard Geisch play at Bulldogs and Maffra (I know it's another era), but seriously this man's capacity to justify the unjustifyable keeps reaching for personal bests. The man is so right for this job ;)

He must have embarassed him in front of everyone.

Honestly, how about acting professionally?

I imagine they would be trying to get away from the skinny, wimpy, high-pitched voice kid who couldn't play so umpires stereotype - but all they do is confirm it

Its not how many are paid, its how, where and when.

Reading this got me wondering about 50m penalties for us and against us, it seems that when we get penalised 50 it results in a score for the opposition and when we get one it's deep in defence, so i went on to the afl site where they show the games and you can click on the goals, frees, 50's and so on and this is what i came up with.
I have worked out what the resultant kick produced.

RICHMOND: OPPOSITION:

50m penalties awarded 18 50m penalties awarded 21
Goals Scored 5 Goals scored 12
Behinds scored 1 Behinds scored 2
Received in defensive 50 10 Received in defensive 50 3
Received on halfback 2 Received on halfback 4

It goes to show that 50m penalties received deep in defence dont hurt as much as the ones that bring you to within scoring distance.

Tigersnake is right, it's where they are paid that counts not how many you get or the soft ones deep in defence.

Forgot to add that one 50m penalty and goal for both Richmond and Opposition was a result of an interchange infringement.

Any mention of the fact that there would have been no melee and no free to Ferrito if they had paid the frees to Maric for the constant off-the-ball stuff that went on throught-out the first half?

Yep. The Geish went further. Admitted to shooting JFK, faking the moon landing and generally screwing up the lives of all Tiger supporters everywhere (including for his stint as coach).

Then submitted to a ritual tar and feathering from Schwass (who did the interview and who clearly struggles with spoken English).

Just kidding (no defamation claims please). They were the only two incidents discussed. Nothing about Tuck's take out of the crappy ball up, the holding on Jack, the melee or the dozen or so other incidents that left me scratching my head on Sunday wondering whether the umpires were really frustrated Norf footballers. I appreciate that the free kick stats were pretty even in the end, but my recollection is that 5 of the North goals were from frees, some of which were crap decisions. That made a huge difference in the end.

and yet when Grima (i think) gave away a free to Cotchin 30 out from our goal, Grima was allowed to run a good few metres at the umpire yelling something waving his arms around but no 50. then Cotchin missed. pay that 50 Cotchin goals and we win the game. maybe.

"The umpire got that one wrong but he got the next one right, so that cancels out the incorrect decision.
Overall the umpires got 98.67859438% calls correct and we're very happy with their games. " said Gieschen. ;)
What? In what universe does that make any sort of sense? Incompetence at it's finest.

Thought it was a bit gutless not to handle the Tuck free kick on "its your call". That was the game changer imo.

In the end we got a few gifts (Cotchins last goal comes to mind), but that would have to be one of the worst umpired games of all time. The first quarter in particular was farcical.

I can only assume they can't attract people to umpire any more. It is a real problem for the AFL.

watched it at pub and all spectators, fans on both teams an neuatrals thought it was terrible,

and whwta happened with that goal by richmond, goal umpire said goal as did boundary. gibbs says he touched it, goes to review

review is inconclusive, and they give it a point WTF?

Seems more and more decisions are becoming a raffle.

Group of players diver on the ball, whistle blows, everyone looks up and hopes they are pointing your way.

Umps were pathetic.

they erred in Carlton's favour early.

They erred even more by over-compensating us later.

And that goal ump that couldn't make a decision. How did he get a game?

The more I think about video replays, the more I think about cricket where, soon, the umps will be too scared to make a decision.

Wish we could bring back the VFL Phanto. I miss it.
