Umpire farce - Getting worse by the minute!

Posted similar in the "Other games" thread so apologies to those who are reading this for a second time.

Went to the Coll v WCE with Pies fan. Great game, good atmosphere, close contest. Ebbed and flowed. Good skills.

TERRIBLE OFFICIATING!!!!

Most frustrating was the inability to pay holding the ball when blokes, who had ample opportunity, were run down from behind. Getting a dicky handball away should be no excuse and worse still, the umpires seemed to let the player with the pill off when the ball was jarred free in the tackle.

The intepretation of the rule should be as follows

If you only had 1 opportunity to dispose of the ball and you are tackled, you must immediately dispose of the football correctly to avoid being pinged.
If you have had more than 1 opportunity and you are tackled, regardless of whether the ball is jarred free or you legally dispose of the ball, you are pinged. The only exceptions are if the tackler gets you low or high or pushes you in the back. However, it is not a push in the back if you are simply carried forward and to the ground in the tackle. The tackler must actually push you in the back separate to the tackle for a free kick to be awarded against him.

Too many ball magnets are getting away with the poor intepretation of this rule (Judd, Ablett, Selwood, Swan, and dare I say it Cotchin). Many can break a tackle, but when caught red handed, umps should show no mercy.

Backmen get the rawest deal. Yesterday I saw 7-8 frees given to forwards for holding/chopping, that were nothing more the one on one body contests and reasonable attempts to spoil.

Can you please let the AFL Umpires Association know this, their morse code receiver was down the day they were advised.

Its really becoming a three team game, umpires are not just calling the free kicks that are there as they should be.

One part of his address has always stuck in my craw. He stated that research indicated AFL fans wanted to see every single technical infringement in 120 mins of footy identified and paid against the offender.

[Craw, not Craw! Ah yes of course.....The Craw!]

What garbage from Giecshen. I'd go the other way and say that in general only the infringements that affect the flow of the game should be called (with exceptions of course like unduly rough play, time wasting, etc.) Some umps have a good feel for this, but unfortunately some don't (but sadly the latter will often have a feel for theatrics). Have seen a player hang on to the ball for too long, get run down with a tackle bordering in the back....'play on!'....good call as the crowd knew it evened out.

Centre square infrigements are so annoying and effectively inconsequential if it was a player stepping in half a second too early. Watch the NBA...bringing the ball in from the baseline after a goal - if there's no defensive pressure, the player passing in is allowed to get away with stepping over the line while passing because it has NO direct affect on the flow of the game.

In summary - call the obvious ones that directly affect the play and leave the rubbish soft ones go.

Exactly. Frees for things like "taking the arms" and "hands in the back" infuriate because for every one that is plucked out, there are two that are let go/missed. Even front-on contact in a marking contest, which was paid correctly 95% of the time since the year dot, seems to have fallen victim to the AFL's inconsistent ways.

What irks me the most is the umpire blowing the whistle and then screeching "advantage, advantage" with half the players stopped to see what the whistle was for.

If a team has the advantage it should be play on without the umpire blowing the whistle just to show everyone how clever he was at spotting an infringement.

If they lose the advantage because of the original infringement, then blow the whistle and bring the ball back.

one of my favorites is when they yell "Knock it out, knock it out" and then when it stays in call a ball up. If he didn't knock it out, why isn't it holding the ball? and if it wasn't holding the ball, why are they telling him to "knock it out" when he has no obligation to do so???

It can't be that hard can it? Watch the netball. The referees are just so used to calling 'advantage' as the first reaction (NO whistle), then followed by the infringement. Play doesn't stop.

'Advantage Essendon, convincing dive' (or whomever they're giving an armchair ride to at the time).

Can only assume it's for show - "I saw that free and paid it" - both to the crowd and Gieschen's department.

Can see/hear it now. "Advantage to Richmond opponent Jake king got to near the ball." Followed quickly by "[Expletive] did I say that out loud?"

Advantage Geelong - Upcoming high tackle on Selwood

Advantage Carlton - Judd held too long in tackle next week

Advantage St Kilda - Nick Reiwoldt out of tissues

Advantage Brisbane - I'm scared of Jonathon Brown

Advantage Adelaide - Richmond player (probably Jake King) reported for <TBD after match in consulation with Phil>

/sarcasm

Fun Ha!

Just heard on the radio the umpires have cracked down on illegal disposal ie throwing. Expect to see some red hot calls on. Throwing this weekend!

I wonder if they're going to crack down on the ball being 'knocked free in the tackle' (ie dropped)? If so, the farce will have gone up another gear. It's clearly been deliberately sanctioned to make the game faster. If they now turn around and start calling illegal disposal it'll finally establish that the game is officiated at the whim of the AFL and the umpiring department rather than the rulebook.

Tucky is going to find it tough this week if that's the case.
